If Venables ever takes a HC gig, will he be considered a Swinney disciple or a Stoops disciple?

I think, and I could be very wrong, that you're considered a disciple of whomever you landed your first coordinator or hc gig under. Since he was given the coordinator gig by Stoops so he'd be considered a Stoops guy following that logic. But I'm not sure, I'm guessing there's no strict definition for how it's classified.

So your avatar is a Skywalker or Snoke disciple?

Is Mel Tucker a Saban, Smart or Tressel disciple? The answer is yes.
That’s why I asked. Lots of head coaches learned from several different mentors. Tucker is a good example. I’d say most folks would consider him to be a Saban guy.

I don’t think there’s a strict definition either. It’s an interesting topic for debate, though.

Agreed. I think that's why I stick with the coordinator or HC rule of thumb because that's when you really become a big name in the coaching circles.

The Swinney contract keeps him there or makes Alabama pay through the nose to hire him away. Smart move on Clemson’s part, IMO.

Sucks for everybody else in college football, though. I wonder how long it will be until we start seeing a Dabo Swinney coaching tree start to grow.

An extra $1-2 million for Dabo wouldn't a deterrent to Alabama whatsoever.

Not if they had their mind set on Dabo, no. But if they have two or three that they think can do the job, then this contract can be the deciding factor in them hiring somebody else.

Not sure Alabama can outspend Clemson. There really is no limit, accept what they want to pay the man.
Bama can outspend them, there is really no question about that. They get more money from their conference distribution, have a bigger donor base, higher ticket sales revenue. I just don't think it would come to a situation like that. Dabo would decide where he wanted to be for the long haul, not go wherever they will pay more money.

I agree, but Clemson's donor base shouldn't be underestimated. My point simply was that Clemson could match whatever the number is until it got to the point where money was no longer the deciding factor, which is the same conclusion you reach.

There's a lot of programs that can't do that, and CU is currently in that situation.

Pac-12 and MW to play in new bowl game in L.A.

The new Los Angeles Bowl at Los Angeles Stadium at Hollywood Park
The new LA bowl will feature the Pac-12 against the Mountain West. This is basically the old Las Vegas Bowl matchup with the bowl getting the first selection from the Mountain West against a Pac-12 team. The Los Angeles Stadium at Hollywood Park opens in 2020 and will also host the 2023 College Football Playoff title game. This bowl is huge for the Mountain West, especially after its 19-year tie-in with the Las Vegas Bowl ends after this season.

Obviously hard for me to like Georgia but their comments this week on scheduling have been spot on. Calling out the rest of the SEC and scheduling some big time games. Now I wish Alabama would do the same thing so lead the pack.

Alabama's OOC this year is a joke for sure but they've scheduled some good games down the road

Just heard Rocky from Hygiene (haha) call Joe (late lunch) discussing transfers. Around 450 kids entered the portal yet only about half have been picked up. ASU had 12 leave. Crazy. Is Herm intentionally running guys off or is he just an A-hole?

Yes.

My Zonies tell me the answer is Yes, meaning both. There's some concern that Herm is bat**** and they are literally seen as totally unattractive to in state kids.

Arizona should be a very high priority. It is unfashionable to stay home there and the beach is considered cool, but USC and UCLA are considered risky. Colorado is #2 cool. Cal is very focused there currently.
