What things can CU do to raise its football prestige?

Are the East Side concessions really that bad? I feel like they could be run more efficiently, but that’s not an infrastructure problem, that’s a people problem. The infrastructure for concessions seems fine to me unless you simply want more... Bathrooms need upgraded, I agree.

It’s basically a cattle pen. Crappy, limited choices that take the entirety of halftime to get from the back of the line to getting food. I’ve never encountered as bad of a concessions situation at the college level and I’ve been to quite a few venues. Need more choices and more registers run by more people.
 
I think one thing that needs to be kept in mind with the west side is that we will only get one shot at it when it’s redone.

With that in mind, I would prefer a roll of the dice and bring the capacity to 60-65k with a lot of premium options. If CU can get back to its traditional winning ways, the conference CU is in and solid OOC scheduling, should sell out 4 of six home games a year. Yeah, Cal and OSU probably are not going to put buts in seats but, aTm, USC, Washington, Nebraska will.

The population along the front range is only going to increase. It’s not like we need 50% of the people coming in to get interested in CU football. We need 1% to get interested. My dad moved to Colorado in ‘71 with no connection to CU and immediately got season tickets because he loved college football. Plus, CU was damn good in those days.

While not sold out, there has been a lot for most games the last few years.
And during the Mac years, a lot of games were packed and loud. I have seen Folsom roudy and it’s a fun environment when it is.
With our population increase and consistent winning football I really think we can fill 65k stadium regularly. Our donations are at an all time high winning will only increase that more. Colorado has a great opportunity in front of it that it needs to take advantage of.
1. Population of the state growing
2. USC being down
3. Pac-12 in general being down
4. A lot more higher interest games as a member of Pac 12 than we had as members of the old Big 8 and 12.
 
I actually think 2 of the biggest things that would help attendance are things that CU has no control over. That's related to traffic into and out of Boulder. So the highway project of finishing the 470 loop by connecting Broomfield to Golden is one of the needle movers. The other is the NW Corridor light rail to Boulder getting done. Part of why population increases haven't had a significant impact is that it's hard for that population to go to Folsom.

Those sorts of things are looking 20 or more years out, I think. For now, it's about making the game day experience or a recruiting visit tour give a clear impression that everything is first class and a special place to be.

I think the east side consessions are so bad, because the west side concessions are worse. With the beer garden in Balch... it is basically unusable now.

To the bolded, just make sure that you include a "master plan" as part of the renovation. Have the structure be engineered for future use/expansion. Pre-install foundations for future use. You can design the west side for multiple expansions down the road if you do it right.

I suppose you are correct. It can be redone with potential for future expansion if consideration is given to that fact.

Just win...no one wants to pay money to see another loss...there have been a lot of losses over the last decade...

Rowdy is great, but if we couldn’t sell out 6 games when we were competing for national titles, we’re not going to sell 65k tickets just because Colorado is adding a lot of people with zero connection to CU football. And USC is a coaching change away from being not down so that’s a small window IMO.

I would be absolutely giddy if we could sell 65k tickets in Boulder, but it’s not realistic IMO. 65k would have is in the top 1-2 for conference attendance - not likely.

We were damn close to selling out during the glory years. The stadium was packed, I remember I was there. And it hasn’t been far from packed the last several years with losing seasons.

I would be the first one to lineup to take the train to games from Denver. I hate the drive now. The bathrooms are first on my list... as well as creating a destination experience. Great tailgating followed by easy entry... with new updated facilities. If Rick George can bring it this far... he can take it all the way. Progress was never accomplished by naysayers. Be part of the solution or get out of the way. I for one am behind Buffnik’s ideas all the way.
 
There have been several comments about improving concessions. This reminded me of a recent podcast that examined why concessions are consistently so bad and so expensive at sporting events. It explains the structure of a concession contract and how it creates disincentive to provide a good fan experience. It also details how the Atlanta Falcons have taken a different approach. The food & drink at Falcons games is supposedly very good and you can get two hotdogs and a beer for about $12 and free re-fills on soda.

If CU can realistically compete against any program in the nation in assistant salary, then this opens up decades of winning. That opens up the wallets like we've never seen.

One exception-force any Nub fans to watch the game from Fort Collins. To me this is two things-One, better OOC scheduling. Two-the last 15 years have been a massive underachievement.........I expect this team to be in bowl games 8-9 years of every decade.

That’s great, we’re still only averaging 45,000 per game and had 1 sellout this year. A 20,000 seat increase is crazy, who is going to fill those seats when we’ve got seats available now? Only 4 schools in our conference even averaged over 50,000 in attendance last year.

Nobody is saying the expansion needs to happen today. It’s a goal. And a good one at that.
