Recruiting News - Olympic Sports

I'd put this in the unconfirmed category right now since I haven't seen a second source yet, but per an Instagram post she made, Buff soccer has picked up a 2022 commitment from midfielder Mallory Allen, who plays her club ball with Lonestar SC, who are out of Austin Texas.

Topdrawersoccer.com IS now showing Mallory Allen as a Buff commit.

Welcome and congrats to her!

Looks like, per my only non-social media source for tennis commitments (https://www.tennisrecruiting.net/team.asp?id=840), that there maybe has been one subtraction and one addition to next (2019) season's recruiting class:
  • As was noted back in post #457, cubuffs.com formally announced, among other things, 2 new 2019 class signees. At that time, if not before, tennisrecruiting also had both listed. However, as of a few days ago, one of them, Radka Buzkova, is no longer listed by that website as a future Buff, so assume her status may have changed.?. IF it has, best wishes to her wherever her life take her.
  • On the addition side, tennisrecruiting is now showing Dominique Stone, who they have listed hailing from North Hollywood, California, as an incoming Buff. (They rate her as a 4 star recruit. I had already seen an Instagram she had made a few days showing her signing to become a Buff, but I waited a bit for this confirmation.)
Welcome and congrats to her!

A couple of new women's golfers to note in this thread-
___________________________________________________________________________________

1) Per the below, English/ Aussie golfer Isabelle Simpson has signed to join the team this coming (2019/20) season.

Official Welcome and congrats to her!

Direct link to article - https://cubuffs.com/news/2019/5/14/womens-golf-kelly-adds-isabelle-simpson-to-2019-20-roster.aspx

By: Linda Sprouse, Associate SID
Release: May 14, 2019

BOULDER — The University of Colorado women's golf coach Anne Kelly has announced the addition of Isabelle Simpson of Brisbane, Australia and more recently London, England, to the roster for the 2019-20 season.

"I got to see her play last summer at a tournament in San Diego," Kelly said. "When I saw the golf swing, I thought, 'Wow, that's a good swing.' So I watched her for a while and ended up talking to her dad. She is friends with Kirsty (Hodgkins), so she decided to come over to campus and look around; I wasn't even here for her initial tour, but they really liked what they saw. I'm really excited to see what she can do."

At St. Margaret's Anglican Girls' School, she was a four-year captain on the golf team. During her time there, she saw her stroke average improve steadily, starting with a 79.5 as a freshman, to 73.5 as a senior. She represented the Met North Region in golf for a record eight straight years and captained the Met North Region team during her sophomore, junior and senior years including to a state championships win in her senior year.
...

A multi-sport athlete, Simpson also played representative cricket, soccer and softball. She intends to major in mechanical engineering. Simpson has dual citizenship with Australia and England and has been nominated to play golf for England.

She was also recruited by Purdue, Vanderbilt and Denver. Simpson decided to come to Colorado because of Kelly. "She is an amazing and highly respected coach," she said. She also decided on CU because Boulder is the best place in America to live and to go to college, and because two former teammates, Hodgkins and Robyn Choi, came to CU and both have become highly successful.
"

(Unless there's been a change in plans, she joins fellow Brit Sophie Johnson (see post #445) as the 2 freshmen coming in this next season.)

Also, I keep forgetting to note in this thread that women's golf also received its 1st known commitment for 2020 late last year in Hailey Schalk of Erie and Holy Family High School. (@GoBuffs08 had already mentioned her commitment last December in post #30 of the https://www.allbuffs.com/threads/wo...-season-news-and-results.133721/#post-2584555 thread.)

Welcome and congrats to her!

A few things I could find on her-
This article from last December also notes her commitment to the Buffs - http://www.juniorgolfcolorado.org/National-Letter-of-Intent-Local.html
(" Hailey Schalk of Erie and Holy Family High School, the 2017 JGAC Girls POY who won the 3A state high school titles as both a freshman and a sophomore, plans to play at CU, which is ranked No. 36 in the nation by Golfweek. Schalk has been receiving college scholarship offers since early in her eighth-grade year. Her dad, Matt Schalk, is the PGA general manager and director of golf at Colorado National Golf Club, the home course for the CU men's and women's golf teams.")

A page that lists some of her (looks to be non-high school) results - https://www.wagr.com/playerprofile/hailey-schalk-24230

Article from February after being named the 2018 state high school golf honoree named by the Sportswomen of Colorado - https://www.coloradogolf.org/earning-accolades/

Looks like track and field has picked up a nice 2019 in-state commit from hurdler (mainly 300M) Garrett Nelson, who went to and competed for Poudre HS in Fort Collins.

Official welcome and congrats to him!

His track results - https://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=8802980
(In addition to his fast top 6 ever Colorado time in the 300M hurdles, which came at the perfect time (It was in his last HS race to win the 5A state championship), he also showed nice improvement throughout his HS career, improving his 300M hurdle personal record (PR) by 3+ seconds between his sophomore and junior years and then another 2+ seconds from junior to senior seasons.

Since he has a cross country record showing in athletic.net that seems to mainly have 9th grade activity, GUESSING he may have just started seriously running the hurdles his sophomore year.)

Making his state championship performance even more impressive this season, looks like he had to overcome a mid-season injury - https://www.coloradoan.com/story/sp...-nelson-wins-colorado-track-title/3724756002/
_______________________________________________________________

Note- with Mr. Nelson being only the 4th 2019 men's commit (and 1st non-distance runner) I know about in the sport at CU that has the largest rosters outside of football (quickly counting, looks like there are ~36 on both the 2019 men's and women's T & F rosters), I'd expect that we'll learn about quite a few late commits like this for track and field before the 2019/ 2020 starts. (The women's team has 12 2019 commits I know about so far, so assume most of the remaining commitment news will be on the men's side.)

Wanted to mention one of the nice "accidents of geography" for the lacrosse team may be that it looks like one of the major*** summer girls' club lacrosse tournaments is in Vail, and it seems like for at MINIMUM the last couple years I've seen social media posts about future Buffs getting to, at minimum, meet and connect at the tournament. (The below Instagram post is from the club of 2020 verbal commit Jordan Johnson, whose commitment to the Buffs was noted in post #471 of this thread.)

(*** I know NOTHING about girls' club lacrosse, so am GUESSING it's a major tournament based on my ASSUMPTION that the Buffs get pretty high level players, and the fact that many go to this tournament is a decent indication it's a top tournament.)

Edit- per the recruiting calendar I found (https://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/2018-19DIREC_WomensLacrosseRecruitingCalendar_20180628.pdf), looks like this is a recruiting "Evaluation Period" for the coaches, so I assume they are also in Vail scouting for additional future Buffs.

As with a lot of the Olympic sport commits (at least initially), I'd put this in the unconfirmed category right now, but per the below Instagram post, looks like men's golf may have received a verbal commit for 2020 from Justin Biwer, who plays prep golf and attends Torrey Pines HS in San Diego.

Welcome and congrats to him!

A little outside confirmation of the Justin Biwer verbal commitment I noted in my previous post!

Looks like, per my only non-social media source for tennis commitments (https://www.tennisrecruiting.net/team.asp?id=840), that there maybe has been one subtraction and one addition to next (2019) season's recruiting class:

Re Ms. Buzkova, just wanted to mention I noticed (while updating the recruiting lists in the original post of this thread) that tennisrecruiting.net now has her as going to Florida Atlantic U..

Again, best wishes to her.

Per the below tweet, saw there's a new 2021 volleyball verbal commit. Per richkern.com, she is 5'9 (Maxpreps) -5'11" (club profile page) libero/ defensive specialist (and maybe setter***) Emma Torstenson, who currently attends and plays for Northfield HS### in Northfield, Minnesota, as well as club ball at the Northern Lights club.

Welcome and congrats to her!

Club profile page - https://www.northernlightsjuniors.org/viewer/?f=/2019/player.php?year=2019&id=413868&team=161
(***In her high school stats, looks like she's been a libero there, but this profile page also lists her as a setter.)

HUDL (latest video is back from February 2018) - http://www.hudl.com/profile/6105809/Emma-Torstenson

(###Northfield is also where 2018 Buff grad and 4 year starter Middle Blocker Anna Pfefferle went to high school.)

Wanted to mention that this past weekend the CHSAA (Colorado High School Athletic Association) database that keeps track of Colorado prep student-athletes going onto compete in college showed a couple more Buff women's track and field commigts for the 2019/20 class that haven't been noted previously in this thread. (I can't get the database query to work for me today, but it normally works at https://chsaanow.com/recruiting/2019-database/ .)

Assuming the database is accurate, welcome and congrats to distance runner Carley Bennett (Lakewood HS, Lakewood CO) and thrower Jane Powers (Valor Christian HS, Highlands Ranch, CO) on joining the Buffs!

Their high school results -

Carley Bennett
Track and field-
Cross country-

Jane Powers

(The database also showed the Buffs getting a male distance runner (Christian Montoya) that hadn't been noted in this thread coming to the Buffs. However, when I did a Google search, I saw an article and team roster page that makes it look to me like he's now going to Arizona.)

Can't find a second source, but the usually reliable topdrawersoccer.com (https://www.topdrawersoccer.com/col...women/colorado/clgid-205/tab-commitments#tabs) lists Buff soccer having picked up its 9th verbal commit for the 2020 class- she is highly thought of (#108 ranked player nationally in her class in the IMG Academy 150) defender Kendyll Fritts, who attends and plays for soccer power*** Junipero Serra (AKA JSerra) High School in San Juan Capistrano, California; She also plays club ball with the So Cal Blues program.
(Per a recruiting class analysis topdrawersoccer did in April, she was listed as going to UCLA. I can find some articles and other recruiting lists that also had her going to UCLA, but I can't find any other confirmation she's coming the Buffs, so assume this must be a new "flip" to CU.)

Welcome and congrats to her!

(***Maxpreps ranked JSerra #2 in the nation and #1 in California after this past school year, and they also ended the 20187 and 2018 seasons prior to that Maxpreps nationally ranked #2 and 3, respectively.)

A few things I could fine on her:

Wanted to note that it looks like a few of the "individual" Olympic sport teams have started updating their rosters on cubuffs.com for the upcoming academic year. With it still being pre-season, assume there could still be changes, but what I see so far (related to recruiting only; #'s in parentheses refer to what post(s) the incoming freshmen were discussed in this thread):

Men's and women's cross country (https://cubuffs.com/roster.aspx?path=cross&roster=524&sort=class) -
Men - As was already anticipated from earlier posts on this thread, Louisiana's Hunter Appleton (434), New Mexico's Kashon Harrison (469) and Colorado's
Austin Vancil (458) ARE on the roster. In addition, it looks like the men also have a previously unknown (to this thread) freshman running this year in Noah Hibbard, who ran in and attended Arroyo HS in Arcadia, California. A little more on him-
Women - All six of the anticipated incoming freshmen distance runners from earlier posts in this thread are on the roster. They are Carley Bennett (494) and Anna Shults (437) from Colorado , Minnesota's Emily Covert (432-433, 439, 451-452), New Mexico's Alisa Meraz-Fishbein (443), and Kyla Christopher-Moody (450) and Rylee Robinson (443-444) from Michigan.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Women's golf (https://cubuffs.com/roster.aspx?path=wgolf&roster=523&sort=class) - The 2 women's 2019 freshmen already noted in this thread (both from England) ARE on the roster - Sophie Johnson (445) and Isabelle Simpson (485).

OFFICIAL welcome and congrats to all the freshmen noted above!

(Re the other Olympic sports - Tennis has a 2019/20 roster page (https://cubuffs.com/roster.aspx?roster=521&path=tennis) available, but no freshmen have been added to it yet. There are no 2019/20 rosters showing available yet for skiing, lacrosse, track and field or men's golf. 2019 Soccer and volleyball rosters are available and have already been discussed as necessary in this
thread, as well as threads specifically set up for those sports.)

It's been quiet on the lacrosse recruiting front for the last 4+ months, but looks like the team has picked up a new 2020 verbal from midfielder (and draw specialist) Zoe McElhaney, who plays for and attends Frisco HS, Frisco Texas, and plays her club ball with GRIT lacrosse.

Welcome and congrats to her!

A couple small things I could find regarding her-
A recruiting page (not much info, and one short highlight video) - https://sportsrecruits.com/athlete/zoe_mcelhaney

Youtube video of same highlight video -

Named All-State this past season (per the highlight video, she was also named to the team after her frosh season) - http://ntghsll.lacrosseshift.com/news/all-state-selections-spring-2019

The lacrosse team has announced its 7 person freshman class, all of whom have been previously noted in this thread. (Below table, also in the original post, pasted below for convenience.)

OFFICIAL welcome and congrats to all!

Buff lacrosse commitments_2019-07-07_2019 class only.gif

Wanted to mention that Prepvolleyball.com just published its annual countdown of it's top 100 ranked seniors ("Senior Aces"). As in prior years, the individuals on the list are behind PV's paywall, and aren't supposed to be named. However, as in prior years, Volleytalk is allowed to create a thread (http://volleytalk.proboards.com/thread/78070/pv-senior-aces-2020?page=3) that lists the colleges (if known) the young women are verbally committed to.

This year, one committed Buff is on the list, at #82. Since there is only one CU 2020 vball commit so far (at least known on this thread), Outside Hitter Maya Tabron (from Gilroy California), I'll assume it's very likely she's the one at #82.

Best wishes to her in finishing off her senior year of high school strong in every aspect!

Per the below, looks like lacrosse has picked up a new verbal commit for 2021 from Midfielder/ Attacker Morgan Zimmerman, who currently plays for and attends Sachem High School East in Farmingville, NY, and also plays club ball with Legacy Lacrosse.

Welcome and congrats to her!

A recruiting page for her (that includes some video highlights) - https://sportsrecruits.com/athlete/morgan_zimmerman

Just catching up on some recruiting stuff as various teams have their official 2019/20 rosters on cubuffs.com.

1st- re tennis:

  • Instead, the Buffs have a previously un-noted student-athlete (at least in Allbuffs) on the roster, freshman Antonia Balzart, who comes to Boulder from Dusseldorf, Germany and the Kurpfalz Gymnasium Mannheim.
Welcome and congrats to her!

Her cubuffs bio page (although as I write this there's nothing written in other than bare essentials like hometown, etc..) - https://cubuffs.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=13259

A profile for her on a tennis website (Not much there other than a few results and birthdate) - https://www.tennisexplorer.com/player/balzert-451c6/

Next up on sports that I'm updating recruiting for based on the rosters being updated*** for the 2019/20 academic year is track and field. In additon to those already disclosed in this thread, newly added student/ athletes are (in alphabetical order):

(*** With track and field having by far the largest roster of any of the Olympic sports (last season had roughly 37 men and women athletes each on the roster, and the individual nature and relative lack of scholarship support "per capita" for the sport, I'd expect we could still see additional names added to the roster before the season starts.)

Women :
  • Isabella Braun (Note- As I write this, her name is the ONLY thing shown on the roster, so I have no other info (event(s), hometown, etc.) on her, and can't determine who she is (high school attended, etc.). https://cubuffs.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=14560)

A little more on the 2 women I COULD find more info on (both of whom look to be throwers)-
Joyleen Fifita -
Her high school results - https://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=9708128
(Shot put looks to be her strongest event so far, as she placed 2nd in the Colorado 5A state championships last season. She also earned points in the discus with a 6th place state championships finish.
General Note- the Buffs are definitely hitting Colorado High schools HARD for its throws roster this season, as the top 3 finishers in the girls' shot from last year's 5A championships are all on the Buff roster this year.)

Gya'ni Sami -
Her results - https://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=10020125
(Her main event looks to be the discus, where she finished 2nd at this past season Colorado 4A state championships (after ending up 6th and 3rd her frosh and soph. seasons). She also finished just outside the points (in 9th) in the shot put.)

Men

There are a few additional men not previously discussed in this thread currently listed on the roster as freshmen. However, from briefly researching a few of them (and knowing from a prior post in the transfer thread that Ronald Sayles is definitely a transfer (from CSU)), at least some of them may be transfers, so aren't really freshmen. For whichever ones ARE freshmen, I'll add more detail to this thread when the roster looks more finalized.

Until then, and whether they're freshmen or transfers, I still of course say - WELCOME and CONGRATS to those I'm not sure of, namely Ryan Charles, Chris Craig, Ryan Ganson and Jake Johnson, to the Buffs!

Just as I was finalizing the above post about new 2019/20 track and field Buffs, I saw a tweet indicating the women's T&F team has just recieved its 1st 2020/21 commit (or at least 1st known to me) in hurdler/ sprinter/ jumper Kara Lucyk, who recently started her senior year at Mountain Vista HS in Highlands Ranch.

Welcome and congrats to her!

Her HS results to date - https://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=11195615
(Look like she's a little stronger in the longer (300M in HS) hurdles, as she's finished 3rd, 4th and 2nd her frosh-junior seasons at the 5A Colorado State Championships. She has, however, also helped her team the last couple years at the Championships by earning points in the 100M hurdles with 6th and 5th place finishes. Although she wasn't a top 8 finisher, she has also competed at the State Championships in the long jump all 3 high school seasons to date.)

Just wanted to mention it's now less than a month until the freshman class of 2020 can formally sign on as Buffs, as the long Olympic sport signing period begins Wednesday, November 13th (and goes through August 1, 2020). (I also edited the original post of this thread to note this year's dates.)

As was started last year (see post #419 for more details from back then), (1) there are no more separate early and late signing periods and (2) soccer has the same signing period as the other Olympic sports.

(Note for bball fans- MBB and WBB still have early (Nov. 13th-20th, 2019) and regular (4/15-5/20/2020) signing periods.)

Per the below tweets, looks like there are a couple new Buff commits. (As I often like to note with Olympic sport commits, due to lack of outside confirmation as is available in the "higher profile" sports, I'd put these in the unconfirmed category right now.)

Welcome and congrats to Mr. Nuhfer and Ms. Palm!
_________________________________________________________________________________________________

1st, looks like men's track and field has picked up a verbal commit for 2020 in sprinter (400M/ 200M runner) Nicholas Nuhfer, who is currently in his senior year at Arvada West HS.

His HS results - https://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=11523826
(Be fun to see how he develops on the track his senior year of high school and into his college years. His best event last season was the 400M sprint, where he finished 2nd at the 5A State Championships last (his junior) season after not looking to have raced that distance at all in earlier years. At those Championships, he also just missed scoring points last season in the 200M, where he finished 9th. It looks like he's also been a multi-sport athlete throughout HS, as he played bball through his sophomore season, and as I type this Maxpreps shows him leading the Arvada West football team in receptions (26).)

_________________________________________________________________________________________________

And, appears lacrosse has picked up a 2021 commit in defender/ midfielder Cooper Palm, who attends and plays for Glen Ridge HS, Glen Ridge, New Jersey, as well as playing club ball with Building Blocks Lacrosse.

As usual, I never found or heard of any ski team commitments ahead of time, but see their roster (https://cubuffs.com/roster.aspx?path=ski&roster=531&sort=class) is listing 4 freshmen for this upcoming season, 2 women and 2 men. (Per their roster bios, Ms. Dietze, Donovan and Mr. Boee are Nordic skiers, while Mr. Birkner will be skiing on the Alpine side.)

Pasted from that roster, they are:

WOMEN'S 2020 SKIING ROSTER
NAMEHT.CLASSHOMETOWN / HIGH SCHOOL
Anna-Maria Dietze5-5Fr.Seiffen, Germany / Eliteschule des Wintersports Oberwiesenthal
Bridget Donovan5-8Fr.Vail, Colo. / Vail Mountain School

MEN'S 2020 SKIING ROSTER
NAMEHT.CLASSHOMETOWN / HIGH SCHOOL
Alex Birkner5-8Fr.Logan, Utah / Sky View
Magnus Boee5-11Fr.Oslo, Norway / Norges Toppidrettsgymnas Geilo

Welcome and congrats to the 4 new skier Buffs!

A couple of pieces of recruiting news, both for the 2021 freshman class -

Per one of websites I use to find lacrosse commits (https://www.insidelacrosse.com/recruiting/commitments/girls?class=2021&league=7), the Buffs have received one from attacker/ midfielder Kendall Keblish, who currently attends and plays for Park City HS, Park City, Utah, as well as the Tenacity National club team out of Salt Lake City.
(Believe she is the 1st lacrosse commit ever from our neighbor state to the west. And, now that I think about it and look at my lacrosse recruiting workbook - I believe she may be the 1st lacrosse commit ever from any of the 7 states that border Colorado. (Talk about worthless trivia.))

Welcome and congrats to her!

A little I could find on her-
Her Hudl page with some highlights - https://www.hudl.com/profile/9049968/Kendall-Keblish

A recruiting page with some more (look to include some more current) videos (Note- this page also lists her as a Buff commit) - https://sportsrecruits.com/athlete/kendall_keblish

Also, don't know who yet, but per the below tweet looks like soccer has picked up a new commit!

From an Instagram post I found, looks like women's track and field has a new, local 2020 commit from Elise Gillett, who is a hurdler and heptathlete from Niwot HS, Niwot, CO.

Welcome and congrats to her!

Her HS (and unattached) results - https://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=10558544&L=0
(As with most high schoolers, there is limited opportunity to perform at multi-events (heptathlon, etc.), but from her post, it sounds like that will be her main emphasis as a Buff. In high school, she's mainly been a hurdler, highlighted by a 2nd place finish in the 100M hurdles at the 2019 4A Colorado State Championships. She also ran the anchor legs for her team's 2nd and 5th place finishes at those Championships in, respectively, the 4X100 and sprint medley relays.)
