College Football News, Rumor & Humor

Crazy excerpt about where top DL come from and pretty much sums up the DL recruiting discussion. Maybe focusing on the South for DL is, in fact, the best strategy, even if star ratings and offer validation is weak for kids that CU is able to pull from that region. End of the day, bigger, stronger kids have a better chance of holding up and being effective vs an OL than smaller ones, and there are far more bigger, stronger kids in the South than in CA and TX apparently.

That is not new news, the South has pretty much always provided the bulk of great DL.

WTF does one have to do with the other?
Many advocated for Les Miles as a solution at CU. He’s a dud, as shown again at Media Days (Pooka blunder). CU dodged a bullet (assuming he was ever considered).

Get the link?

Ignorant fan chatter is a far cry from assuming he was ever considered.

He may never have been considered officially, but numerous fans considered him an option not only this time around but also five years ago. Seems perfectly relevant to discuss his press conference in the general college football news thread.

Fans considering him five years ago is akin to fans considering Kirby Smart this year. So what. CU wasn’t considering Miles or Smart.

He was a prior coach at CU. He had connections to George. He may never have been even remotely considered, but a ton of fans speculated about him. I understand why they speculated. The post about his presser was akin to saying, “For those fans that really wanted Miles, we dodged a bullet.”

God these old SEC coaches excusing an 8 game conference schedule from their old teams is getting really old (tucker included). Fans, coaches and probably players all want a 9 game schedule, call the conference and AD’s out for their bull****.

That's not going to change. The SEC has shown that it is extremely profitable to them and there is no way they are going to change that. The rest of the P5's are going to have to go to an 8 game schedule.

THEY CAN’T.

The big 10, pac 12 and big 12 can’t switch to an 8 game conference schedule. The big 12 for obvious reasons about their round robin format on top of the tv deals these conferences have signed.

I also don’t buy that they won’t go to a 9 game schedule. There is a lot of pressure for a 9 game conference schedule or a 10 P5 minimum per year which would help a lot.

Yes, I agree. I was making this point the other day, and while it remains to be seen as to whether or not it will work, here is where I am on this subject:

Brumbaugh played at Auburn, and a bit in the NFL. He coached two draft picks at UK. Who knows whether or not he will turn out to be a good coach here, but I am confident that he knows what a good defensive lineman looks like. Thus far, we are signing BIG bodies that have a good first step and decent lateral movement....they almost all lack in some area (hands, hips etc....), but they have the potential to be good if they are coached well. Throw on top of this, that these big bodies can eat up blockers and allow a very good LB core to flow and make plays. I understand the concerns of those that follow recruiting a lot closer than me....but this all makes sense to me if we're trying to be a physical team that can wear opponents down. I would hope that all of these guys also have a nasty disposition

Notice the size of Mustafa (blue shirt), vs many in this group. If we can get our secondary shored up/avoid injuries, I am actually pretty darn hopeful about this defense. I hope I am right.

EDIT: the goal obviously being that we recruit more polished recruits as time goes along.

with the 10P5 rule, the SEC and ACC could stay at 8 for the foreseeable future playing each other without a fraction of the Pac12 or XII in-conference travel costs.

Yes, and you correct on those points. However, when the contracts are up, they can absolutely go to an 8 game schedule.

What incentive does the SEC have to go to a 9 game conference schedule? Because the other P5 conferences say so? Good luck with that.

I'd love to see everyone go to a 9 game conference schedule, but what I think should happen and what will happen are two entirely different scenarios. The SEC has proven that an 8 game schedule works for them in so many ways. They've been in the playoff every single year and having an 8 game schedule is a big reason for that. The money is the same and they can schedule G5's in non-conference with no issues affecting their chance at the playoffs. No way will they ever change that.

It won’t happen then either. You aren’t going to get the same money from the networks if you decrease your inventory. Wilner has been over this many times.

The incentive is oh I don’t know, more money from more big conference games, actually getting to travel to see your team play cross divisional teams more than once every 6 years, uniform scheduling rules across the entire P5 to help weed out those teams with weak schedules. Even the almighty SEC is having attendance issues with these body bag games they schedule. I honestly think it is probably wise to apply pressure to the ACC first, they have some serious attendance issues and trouble scheduling home and homes with some of their bottom tier teams. Then the SEC can’t just be the only one playing 8 P5 teams right? Alright don’t answer that lol

Pac-12 should go to an 8-game conference schedule. The 9-game is nice for fans, but it also builds in 9 extra losses for conference teams every year. If those 9 conference games became 18 non-conference games, got to figure that not all of them would be against P5 teams and we'd suffer fewer than 9 losses out of that mix.

No one should be playing an 8 game conference schedule in the P5 conferences.

The Pac-12 should get distribution for the P12 Network on Direct TV and all other large media distributors.

We are just barking at the moon.

I know what you are saying, but that will further devalue P12 TV contract through reduced inventory.

I vote for all teams to play 9 conference games and at least 1 (preferably 2) P5 teams. I also support all teams starting on week 0 with two byes per season.

Which comes first? I'd say that poor performance leads to poor distribution -- with poor performance defined as football programs not making the Playoff with too few being ranked or winning bowls. Also with the basketball programs with not making the Final Four, too few tourney bids, too few teams advancing to the 2nd weekend when they get in, and too few teams ranked during the season.

I believe the focus should be on improving the product and its positioning instead of on distribution. Besides, an 8-game schedule would probably help exposure and distribution anyway since it would add non-conference games that are more interesting to a national audience than Pac-12 conference games. So the things we could do on product/positioning should help accomplish what you're focusing on anyway. If it's just about distribution, though, right now with no changes we'd just be offering an inferior product and need to discount to the point where I don't know that it would even increase revenue. Could actually cut revenue since the existing contracts would automatically adjust down to the newly negotiated rate.

It would increase inventory if more than half of the added games were home games.

Couple it with expansion to 14 conference members and we'd actually add 15 or 16 conference games with the addition of those 2 teams.

This math is a factor in the B1G and SEC commanding more media dollars.

Not if those are garbage games that get relegated to the pac 12 network.
