I think I will know the defensive recruiting is turning a corner when two things happen:

1. The over-reliance on JUCOs slows to a trickle.

2. We sign some legitimate blue chips in the secondary.

The one you are missing.

When we start consistently signing some high school interior defensive linemen who have legitimate offers from quality P5 programs.

Not asking for 4*/5* types, not asking for top 150 guys. Just need to see each year at least a couple of HS defensive linemen that other decent P5 programs (Kansas doesn't count) have offered and are pursuing.

OL (and DL) recruiting was MM’s downfall here because he did not require his two OL coaches to recruit at a high level.
The point is that he had 2 OL and DL coaches (that all failed). If he had replaced Bernardi & Jeffcoat once it became obvious they weren't recruiting for ****, and/or their replacements had been far better than they were MM might still be coaching here. (Yes, this is sort of like saying if your aunt had balls she'd be your uncle - she doesn't and MM didn't*)

It wasn't merely fact that the initial hires didn't work well that was MM's undoing - it was also his inability to fix it.

If the recruiting on the DL fails it won't sink MT. That is, unless he fails to make a change (for the better) fast enough. MM failed because he didn't make a change soon enough and when he did finally make a change, it wasn't a clear improvement.

*didn't make the changes he should have when he should have; what did you think I meant?

An 85.24 class might win a bowl game against Wake Forest.j
That's one more bowl game than we've won in the past 15 years.

More importantly, no one (I think) is saying that an 85.24 average is acceptable.

Two steps, both are important:

1.Let's see where we finish
And
2. Let's see what (if any) changes are made after that.

We are at a better place in July than we have been in July for years.

We are not where we want to be in July.

Those are not incompatible statements.

I think we were in a better spot last July than we are this July. Certainly not a significant difference either way. This recruiting class, as of today, is nothing special. It’s below average for power 5 school based on average stars. Need to win some games, get to some bowls, before we can see a noticeable up-tick. That is unlikely to happen this year. #3winsin2019

What a ****ing tool.

Who was committed last year at this time that was comparable to a Lee, Lewis, Ray, or Parker?

Huffman - Dixon, Jashua Allen, Mangham, Evans, and/or Toler were all committed and overall ranked higher based on composite. Facts are facts.

Actually, no. Toler was like an 85-86 until the end of 2018 where he jumped from the 800’s to the 500’s.

Some of you guys are obsessed with the recruits we lost last year...

Evans and Toler? Both ended up ranked lower than shenault and ham. Ham, Shenault, Allen, Dixon and Mangham were a higher ranked duo than the one you mentioned. Facts are facts.

Back to the actual thread, with Harris tossing the buffs in his top 6, how much does his basketball aspirations effect him for CFB? I remember Lang took a redshirt because he wanted to get bigger after dropping some Lbs for basketball, would him being dual sport or at least prepping to be have the same effect or was it just Lang's body type

It is not entirely clear he wants to play both sports anymore. He seems to be leaning toward football only.

It will take a lot to overcome Arizona, but he would be a game changer on defense.

I’d assumed his UA interest was due to basketball being primary. I guess I shouldn’t assume.

Comparing a coach coming out of year 5 to a coach taking over a team that lost its last 7 is ridiculous. Even if we were to agree that MT’s first class and Mac’s last are comparable I’d say MT deserves a lot more credit given the circumstances.

The amount of legitimate interest and visits from big time prospects relative to even a year ago is staggering.

Last year at this point plus the first home game there were SIX official visitors who had composite grades of 90-plus. This year there have been ZERO. Even if we expand that to 88-plus...last year at this point TWELVE. So far this year just FOUR. But your takeaway is that there have been more high profile visitors this year? And that the the difference is staggering? And eight people liked this post? WTF is going on here? There is so much bias in favor of this new staff that its clouded people's ability to actually think, or in this case to count. It's not surprising the grades in this thread are so much higher then is warranted.

There is some truth here because I forgot the 4* visitors last summer, mainly because we did not seem to have much of a chance after the visits. Chev was killing it in So Cal last year.

Welcome to every cfb board ever. People don't do research, and they react poorly to reality.

I mean, point taken regarding scheckler's post, but we landed all of.. one of those guys. And idk, quibbling about an 87 or 91 doesn't do much for me. Jake Wray and Jason Rodriguez are basically the same guy, highly recruited tons of options. That's the difference so far.

That said we better see some solid closing in the fall and winter for this class because my expectations are higher than slightly better than MM recruiting

MT talked a big game and needs to play a big game now.

Is comparing year 1 of one staff to year 5 of another staff apples to apples?

Expectations help form our opinions. I have higher expectations once a staff has had a chance to establish itself than I do when they are brand new. That impacts my opinion. If you want to know what a computer thinks of recruiting, ask a computer.
