USC is hiring Lincoln Riley from Oklahoma as its new HC

The DL recruiting is true. I said it earlier that I think Riley will need to steal some SEC country DL to get them to the next level.

However, based on everything else you posted, I don’t think you truly understand what USC is and can/will be. They have every bit of potential to be Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and/or Georgia. Riley will have them vying for #1 recruiting classes every year and he’s an excellent coach.
It will be fun to see how it plays out. Again, I can easily see the occasional USC team going 11-1, getting into the playoff, and then getting hammered 42-14 in its
first game. I just don't see the top 10 or so D-Linemen / LBs in the south every year signing on to USC when the blue bloods of the SEC are knocking on their doors and the parents live a 2 hour drive away from home games. I do think that Riley might possibly have some success getting good Poly guys away from the BYU, Utah, and Oregon schools piplines, as wells as stopping the eastward migration of Cali kids. In addition, he has deep tentacles into Texas high schools and he might be able to keep some of that.

Multiple conference championships and Heisman winners? What's wrong with that? When USC has a competent coach, they're a powerhouse. It's not going to take them long to be back on the national stage now that they have an outstanding coach.
I think that USC could become a Top 10 team nationally within 2-3 years. No argument there. Just not a Top 4 juggernaut that strikes fear into the top 2 or 3 SEC teams every year.

The type of USC you think is possible is already what we’ve seen in various seasons under Helton when they’ve been “down”. When they get it rolling, they will definitely be right there with the nations elite

His offensive system is definitely a much more physical system than most AR schemes. He’s had a ton of awesome backs and will continue to have backs get great gains on a YPC basis. The run game will be fine. Defensively I actually think they’ll improve because the P12 offenses are worse than the B12.
This is true, but I still don’t think his version of the AR maximizes SC’s advantage. We all know there is a big difference between having backs that get good stats out of the AR, and having an offense that can line up and run the ball at will. If he can do the latter, and run the AR, he will have a shot at winning a few natty’s there.

He does not run an Air Raid scheme. It is much more RPO than Air Raid, especially after he tweaked it for Murray, Hurts, and Williams.

I don’t know what you call his version of the spread, so my bad….but it’s still the spread. It breeds big plays, and is not conducive to imposing your will as a dominant FB team. My overall point is that if he can progress more in line with the style of play that LSU ran and Bama runs, then I am wrong on this whole point. I have just not seen anything to this point that leads me to believe that he knows how to instil that type of physical toughness into his team.

funny to me a bit, i beer watched some of the UCLA-USC game and the announcers seemed to overly "hammering home" the point that the last time USC was a power was with a D minded coach, mixed in with Jaxson Dart is the real deal, talks with Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart name drops. i was kinda nodding my head a bit....even though Petey was a bit cheating, hey, that's the world. i did feel like i was being "finessed" as a viewer.....so be it.

this is not that hire.

good for USC, i guess. they say Riley is awesome at the social media/NIL world......no better place than socal for that....better than Norman, Oklahoma.....one surmises.

I am more skeptical with his inability to get his defenses where they’ll need to be to compete at that level.

Good defenses are built through demanding, physical practices playing against a demanding and physical offense. This is exactly the concern that was top of mind when I made the above comment. This is a red flag to me.

I think if Riley doesn't improve upon what he was doing at Oklahoma, USC will be a perennial rose bowl rep with some CFP appearances if he manages to not trip on his dick twice a season. That was basically what PC was doing in the later years. Now if he can fix the defensive issues that has led to his teams getting lit up in CFP type games, I can easily see him winning a natty there

As much as we want USC to suck eggs, it will help us a lot if they’re elite again. It would improve the perception for the conference, help keep elite players in the footprint, drive a better media contract, and generally improve the fortunes of all PAC 12 programs. We never beat them when they sucked, so why not benefit from the being elite again?

Only if they remain a part of what we currently refer to as the PAC12. That’s tenuous. A lot is going to change over the next three to five years.

Nah. Going independent isn’t even really working for ND. SC doesn’t have that kind of cache, and the second they leave the conference, they lose their games with UCLA. The known difficulties of independence far outweigh any potential benefits.
The only P5 conference that would go after USC would be the B1G, and I honestly don’t see any scenario where the B1G dissolves 100 years of history to pull a stunt like that which would provide minimal benefit at best. Add in the potential for a much more lucrative media deal on the not too distant horizon, and it really doesn’t make much sense for USC to leave. So while yes, it’s possible that USC could bolt for independence or another conference, I see both scenarios as extremely unlikely.

Who knows if this is legit, but my goodness

blink-182 wtf GIF

Can USC throw in Karl Dorrell’s buyout in those figures, while they’re at it, and gift him (back) to UCLA?
