A native of Morrison, Colorado, Rahne attended Bear Creek High School in Lakewood, where he lettered in football and track and field. During his senior season, Rahne led all Colorado quarterbacks with 3,114 passing yards for 33 touchdowns.

Rahne was a three-year starting quarterback at Cornell University from 1999 to 2001.

After working at Holy Cross as a defensive assistant, Cornell hired him to coach RBs.

From there, he joined Ron Prince's staff at KSU (James Franklin was OC at the time) for 3 years. After Prince was fired, Bill Snyder kept him on staff for the next 2 years as a TE Coach.

James Franklin then hired Rahne to coach QBs on his Vanderbilt staff from 2010-2012. Rahne then followed Franklin to Penn State through 2019, where he coached QBs (coached PSU passing records holder Christian Hackenberg), then TEs when Joe Moorhead was brought in as the new OC (coached Mackey finalist Mike Gisecki), and then OC/QB (QB McSorley drafted).

For the 2020 season, Rahne was named the HC at Old Dominion. The 2019 team went 1-11 (0-8 in C-USA). 2020 season was cancelled due to Covid. 2021 saw ODU go bowling (lost to Tulsa) and finish 6-7 (5-3 in C-USA). 2021 has started off with a win vs Virginia Tech with upcoming games at East Carolina and at Virginia. They've also joined a tougher Sun Belt Conference.

I like that he comes from the Snyder and Franklin coaching trees. I like that he's a CO guy with the brains to go to Cornell. I like that he's coached multiple positions at winning programs in the Big 12, SEC and Big Ten. I like that he was a successful coordinator. I like that he quickly improved the ODU program in his first HC gig.

And I really like that he's got a recruiter background which has translated into showing some balls & program hyping game as a HC. Prior to the VA Tech game, VT tweeted out some stuff about it being their state showing a landmark in ODU's locale. After ODU beat them, Rahne responded (VT folks got pissed at him for it ):

Intriguing candidate we should watch closely this season.

Resume seems a hair sparse for the head coaching job. I wish he had a bit more time in this ODU or penn state stints. I’ll be interested to see how they do this year though

6 years as an assistant at PSU and he had another 2 under Franklin at Vandy seems like a pretty good chunk of time. Not to mention Franklin brought him to PSU, which is high praise as a coach and recruiter.

I agree, we’ll see what he does this year but they’re obviously off to a good start. I think 3 seasons as HC at a small school is pretty standard for getting a P5 HC job, assuming those 3 seasons saw great improvement, which seems to be the case.

Intriguing candidate for sure, but no TX or CA connections and he’s spent most of his career on the East Coast

Yeah. I count 5 years at K State (4 full AC staffer), 3 at Vandy and 6 at PSU. Now in his 3rd year as a HC, 2nd season.

It's weird how this goes. If this was his 5th year as PSU OC/QB I think people would be higher on him than they are with these past 3 years as a HC.

Anyway, that's how it goes.

Agreed plenty of time, but more meant as an OC. After this year we should have a better idea

Total salary is $750k plus bonuses. Original contract linked below was extended through 2026. Looks like a buyout would be less than a million.

this is probably the candidate pool we are shopping in--- could be good, could be awful, lots of unknowns... more of a mm hire than a tucker hire.

i would like to see us swing for a "system" coordinator from the big or the sec but this could work.

An MM type that is more proactive in recruiting would be a good hire imo.

Here's the letter he posted to Twitter after his 2020 season was cancelled.

🙄 SMH... the absolute last criteria should be Colorado roots. 2 yrs as an OC at Pedphile U and 2 yrs HC at ODU. Not what I would look for to transform the entire Buffs program.

Matt Rhule or Tom Herman have results at this level and should be available.

More than fair. Even if I decide I really like Rahne, I can't imagine I'd want him hired over Herman.

Buffnik, I call shotgun on your Ricky Rahne bus!
I think there is a lot more information about his offensive adaptability.
He works with what he has and makes it exceptional, including Top 30 rankings
$2.4 Million per year would do it, if he saw something worthwhile, including if we were to move into the Big 12 with his cross-country recruiting

I mean he was the athlete chosen by our High School as "Most likely to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated" so what more do you need?

I think this is a candidate where there will be mutual interest assuming he finishes the season strong

Only 2 years (ODU cancelled the 2020 season) of on field HC experience might not be enough for RG. Results have been good, though. Recent relevant experience is all east coast, though. Would need to assemble a strong staff with plenty of west coast/TX ties

Would he ever leave us though? Say he wins three consecutive Pac12 championships. If he would leave us after that, I wouldn't want him to begin with.

I think at this point with my thinking, if we are going to bring in a G5 HC or P5 coordinator, I'd like to see them command one side of the ball and spend heavy on the other side for their coordinator.

With Ricky, I don't know that he does that with his limited OC experience. However, he seems to be a hell of a recruiter and motivator, which is what CU needs. I like him in my top 3 G5 coaches if CU goes that way.

What I like about coaches from the Snyder tree is that as a general rule they know how to turn programs around.

"The do one thing everyday to make the team better" mantra that he drilled into his coaches and players is the right way to go about big turn around jobs, and it works.

You'll always have players that you ask to do more than one thing, your best ones. If you have a roster that can, at least, do their damn job everyday you have a football team.

Rahne will be a nice wait and see option. ODU's remaining schedule in the Sun Belt is brutal. If he can keep a winning record for ODU this year, he shoots up my board, imo
That's where I am. I have trouble seeing them bowl eligible with the step up in competition and the overall schedule considering the state of that program when he took it over a few years ago.

So I don't think he's in the conversation now, but I see him as a guy who has the opportunity to vault himself strongly into the mix of top candidates.
