Official CU Head Coach Search Thread - Primetime

While I would love Herman as the HC, realistically I do not think he will be at CU. I believe CU needs young skilled minds with big recruiting chops. This would be my best scenario currently:

HC: Ryan Walters
OC: Bobby Petrino or Troy Taylor
(doubtful if he would leave Sac State to come audition for a P5 HC position taking the OC at CU but this would be the best scenario)
DC: Donte Williams (If Colorado is truly looking to reestablish its recruiting pipeline to the Los Angeles area, Williams would be a smart choice. He's one of the more established names in the SoCal recruiting scene and has brought in talent to Oregon and now USC. Williams, 40, also served as interim head coach at USC last year after Clay Helton was fired and interviewed for Fresno State's head-coaching vacancy. He was retained by new coach Lincoln Riley and has overseen a playmaking secondary early this season. The Los Angeles native worked at Arizona and Washington earlier in his career and has spent all but one year in the Pac-12 footprint)
DL/Associate Head Coach: Oscar Giles - Prior to Giles’ first recruiting class at Texas in 2018, the Longhorns had the 25th-ranked class in the country. They followed up this performance with rankings of third, third and eighth from 2018-20, respectively. Hired during the Tom Herman regime, Giles was retained by Steve Sarkisian and is a big part of building recruiting classes for the future. CU would need to add Associate HC to his title.
WR Coach/Lead Offensive Recruiter: Lonnie Galloway (NC State WR Coach) Galloway was one of the main contributors to 2020 and 2021 classes that both finished in the top 14 nationally. Two of UNC’s three classes immediately prior to his arrival finished outside the top 20, even with the signing of QB Sam Howell. Galloway’s WR group finished 12th in the nation in total offense and included third-round pick Dyami Brown.
RB Coach: Brian Callahan (currently the Running Game Coordinator at Minnesota) Callahan was brought on board in P.J. Fleck’s first season as the Gophers’ head coach. Their three classes prior to his addition finished 63rd, 46th and 59th. Two of the next three seasons, Minnesota finished in the top 40 in recruiting and added first-round pick Rashod Bateman. Five of Callahan’s OL group were recognized as All-Big Ten honorable mention or better, and several are expected to be drafted in 2022.
DB Coach: David Lockwood (currently at Appalachian State) ranked as the 37th best DB coach in all of college football and doing so at App State, and an excellent recruiter on top of being a top shelf level DB coach. Upgrade to the P5 level and give him the Lead Defense Recruiter title.

Bob Lopez and Chandler Dorrell have to go - A solid Dir of Player Personnel would be Ed Orgeron

Thrown in 20+ solid transfers and with this staff bringing in top 10 recruiting classes, CU is competing for the FBS Championship by year two. Plenty of reasons this would not happen but if there is a dedication to win, putting together a staff like this is reminiscent of what Coach Mac did, focusing on recruiting coaches with talent at their position. Hiring the likes of this staff could turn things around for RG and his tenure/legacy (Dorrell could become just a blip sandwiched between MT and this staff). Again, not saying this will occur, but this would be my choice for a staff that could literally return the Buffs to Dominance almost immediately.

Donte Williams is the gem - he is listed as the #1 recruiter in the nation - moving him from USC DB coach to DC gives us a great shot and there is always Walters to help support the Defense if Williams is not quite ready for the jump to a full time DC role.
Where is Tom Herman going?

Nebraska? No. Isn't happening. What pissed a lot of people off down there were his politics. Herman's insanely smart, and he's very forward thinking. He'd have the same issues in Lincoln.
Georgia Tech? Possible, but weird fit.
Wisconsin? No. That job is Jim Leonhard's to lose.
Arizona State? Who is even making that hire? Ray Anderson gets canned there at some point......I would have to think.

I'd argue we're the only job of the five power openings he looks at. I've been saying this for a while guys-This is a GREAT year to be on the market for a Head Coach. We'll have more P5 gigs open....but its not going to be like last year. Louisville opens before the end of the year. Auburn opens any day now. That was the most intense silly season I've ever seen.

Don’t know why we are stressing about this hire. I am sure RG is doing is homework and being thorough. He doesn’t strike me as the type of guy who’d make an impulse decision based on emotion and then double down on that poor decision way too early.
Meh no back surgery this time. I didn't know vicodin made people make ****ty decisions.

Kyle Wittingham for sure
Funny man. No I think Fitzgerald picks up if CU calls right now. There are CU connections. He played for Barnett at Northwestern. He was a GA here in 1999. Why would he leave? One, he's been at Northwestern for 17 years. The idea that he's taken that thing as far as its going to go isn't far fetched. USC looks awfully good under Riley so far. UCLA's no slouch either. Its going to get harder for him there. Could he be a guy who might be open to a change of scenery? I'd say so.

75% of Austin voted for hunters phone contact known as pedo peter and the whole state voted 46% for uncle Joe.... Republicans playing politics is what fired Tom Herman!!!!! Hahahaha democrats are such low IQ fart smelling morons

Owen Mccown has a bunch of twitter likes for Jeff Traylor. Superrrrr oddddddd

Jeff Traylor has a $7 million buyout and also makes $3 million a year. Sadly, he’s out of our league.

Scott Frost took a dumpster fire UCF team and turned them into an elite team. A lot of luck there for sure.

But more than anything, the idea of Scott Frost coming to Boulder and succeeding after killing Nebraska's program makes me aroused.
Didn’t you read that article that said there were lots of things going on at Nebraska under Frost?

Just think of the ratings bonanza and attendance next season when Scott Frost’s CU team hosts Eric Bieniemy’s Cornhuskers at Folsom Field. If that wouldn’t energize the rivalry and get the BIG10 drooling over a decade’s worth of that matchup, nothing will!!
Too bad Salaam and Philips are no longer around to part of those staffs.

Right division-Pat Fitzgerald is who I was thinking of.
My first thought but then I looked at his contact. He just signed a 10-year extension at over $5M per year. Couple that with the record last year and this year & I don't see how it makes sense.

Y'all are too optimistic when you're thinking of people with P5 HC experience. I want to believe that this means people like Herman, Peterson, Mendenhall, Rhule, or Chryst.

What this actually means is people like Mora, Mark Helfrich, or Butch Jones.

Mark Helfrich. Forgot about him. That would be a disappointment

Counterpoint: most people thought that the process that brought in Midnight Mel was good.

What I've gleaned from his actual words are that when push comes to shove he goes based on the "feelings" he gets in the interview.

Essentially the opposite of having a plan with actual metrics that he measures candidates against.

He might have a few broad criteria to somewhat narrow the field, but those are checkboxes, not actual criteria.

He's a 1970s baseball scout who judges based on if they "look the part" rather than measurable data.

He'll present data to justify his decision, but that's post hoc justifications, rather than stuff he actually looked at before making the decision.

(This is why he was blindsided by the real numbers that showed regression over KD's career (and Sanford's for that matter) - he looked at top line and said "yeah that supports the feeling I got in the interview," and called it good.)
Rick George Costanza needs to do the opposite of his natural instinct.

Agreed on midnight Mel. As for the last hiring and process, contract…..

So, right now the AD can make 5 legitimate phone calls to get the process started without perceived interference of a coach in season.

Herman
Petersen
Chryst
Mendenhall
Fuente

There are plenty of washouts to call too but if that the route the AD wants to take those guys will be there after signing day as well.

Fully prepared for them to screw this up and hire someone who I’ve never heard of and who has been stagnant for the last decade.

May as well call Collin Klein. Dude lives and breathes K-State but is from CO and needs some sort of upwards step before the head coaching job in Manhattan comes open

I think most would agree that CU shat the bed on both Midnight Mel's and KD's contracts. But the process that led to the hiring of Tucker is more like what's going to happen over the next two months than the process that led to KD's hiring (a 10-day "search').

No thanks

Plus, he's getting a new stadium and top of the line facilities better than anyone in that conference (except maybe OSU & Mich) in the next 18 months. Fitzgerald is not going anywhere.

After reading through all the threads, I still believe this year sets up well to be looking for a head coach. There are a lot of good candidates out there, and while CU may not be in the first tier of openings, that first tier looks pretty shallow, maybe 6-8 spots. CU can and should land a good coach.

I agree we'll land a decent coach, just not from the list people seem to be throwing around. We're not getting a Chryst, Herman, Peterson, Mendenhall, etc. These are guys who if they choose to take a position are not going to wade into the quicksand that is our program. They'll take RGs call then turn around and reach out to their individual coaching and media networks which will tell them to run away as fast as they can. They will then politely decline. A G5 HC or P5 Coordinator is where we'll land.
