    My understanding is that there is no chance USC wins the appeal, but since the decision in the appeal didn't come down until after signing day, the scholarship penalties won't kick in until next year. USC knew all this going in; they are just trying to stagger the bowl ban and scholarship...

    I don't think that's how a greyshirt works. My understanding is that the kid simply delays enrollment, staying at home and then usually enrolling, with a scholarship, in the Spring Semester, e.g., Alex Lewis this year. Does that change your opinion at all? It's not costing them any money...
