Huge hat tip to Nik (and rep him people) for finding all of this info out.

He started out as a walk-on at University of New Mexico, where his dad played ball and was an All-American. He didn't play in his first season at UNM (profile says he was injured) and he transferred to Missouri State University. Started all 30 games for the team and led them in assists in 2011-12 according to CU's website. However, on the press release from MSU announcing his transfer, it says that his stats were:

Nelson, the Grizzlies’ lone NCAA Division I transfer player this year, averaged 8 points, three rebounds and two assists during the past season. He shot 38 percent from the field, 32 percent from 3-point range and 72 percent from the charity stripe.

Not sure if CU got that correct or if the entire team at MSU is made up of Al Harrington's. Either way, his coach spoke highly of him:

“The University of Colorado has high academic standards, and Kevin will thrive there,” Walker said. “He will be closer to home, and he will get to travel much of the west coast and experience life at the high-major NCAA Division I level. We couldn’t be happier for him, but we will miss the example that he set as a gym rat, both on the court and in the weight room.”
