Re: '10 NV PK Nolan Kohorst

The number of kickers we target is slightly ridiculous.

Re: '10 NV PK Nolan Kohorst

It might not mean anything --- maybe he is just targeting the Buffs and not the other way around, but since he was reported to have watched practice, thought it was worth a profile.

Re: '10 NV PK Nolan Kohorst

Worth a profile since he was at practice, but I'm not sure I like making a habit of having four scholarship kickers on the roster (assuming Kohorst is being looked at for a scholarship).

Re: '10 NV PK Nolan Kohorst

For all we know, his family was out for a vacation and he stopped by.

One more story.
Kohorst’s foot covers sloppy offense for Green Valley

[Coach] Gerber first noticed Kohorst the summer following the kicker's freshman year, when he was messing around and canned a 35-yard field goal at the school with his brother holding the ball.

"He just said, 'Hey, you want to play varsity football?'" he recalled.

Just like that, he gave up soccer -- which he'd played since age 6 -- and now is drawing the attention of college coaches. The lone Division I program to contact him so far is Boise State, ...
He holds two offers at the moment, none from CU.

Re: '10 NV PK Nolan Kohorst

I'm not surprised that we're looking at some kickers, put I would have thought we would be targeting punters rather than placekickers. DiLallo's going to graduate from the punter side, and Grossman & Grossnickle are back on the PK side (Davis is probably just a kickoff specialist at this point). Unless the Nickle is moving to punter, I just don't see it.

Re: '10 NV PK Nolan Kohorst

He was definitely visiting practice with his dad yesterday. I don't know anything beyond that. I was really confused when I saw him too because he's a super skinny kid and I had no idea what position we'd be recruiting him to play. We have so many kickers that that didn't even cross my mind.

Is this your definition of super skinny? :smile2:

Re: '10 NV PK Nolan Kohorst

I'm just saying that if I were returning a kick and heading for the endzone, I'd have 6 points. To give you some perspective, Goodman is 5-11 190, Jameson Davis is 5-10 185, Ryan Aweida (the new walk-on kicker) is 5-11 185, and Grossnickle is 6-3 180. Even for a kicker he's on the smaller side.

Your absolutely right, I was agreeing with you.

160 is light.

Grossnickle's broken arm has kept him out of the weight room and Pitman's program thus far. He may be able to put on some pounds once he can lift.

I don't mind them looking at Kohorst; kicking is so unpredictable that you never know what we'll look like at the end of the season. Nobody would have predicted the way our season went last year, and nobody knows yet how much it can be reversed.

If Kohorst isn't the guy (and since we didn't offer Kip Smith and Justin Castor when they were available), then we can keep hoping for Jake Van Ginkel in the 2011 class.

Correct. Having a kicker or punter who is big enough to tackle is a huge plus.
The trend is definitely toward big guy kickers when you can find them.

By the way, I check now and then, and this video is up to 33,900+ views.
Inexplicable. :wow: "Colorado Swag" is at 5,823 .

Re: '10 NV PK Nolan Kohorst

I don't know about a trend for big kickers...a lot of kickers/punters are smaller. In fact, I'd contend that kickers/punters should not be too bulky, because they need a good swing in their leg. Too much muscle can inhibit the flexibility in the leg, and therefore the swing. Sure, you need to have some muscle for power, but there is a balance.

But yes, this kid is too skinny, as is Grossnickle at this point. I really don't want us taking a kicker this year...

Re: '10 NV PK Nolan Kohorst

Maybe this is a sign of how much confidence the coaching staff has in the returning kickers. I am all for competition, but we sure do have a lot of scholarship kickers and we are looking to sign more? sheesh.

It's an unofficial, he's a kicker, he is taking his summer tours.
Probably making too much of it.

If we were seriously looking for a kicker already, there would have been stronger interest in Kip Smith, IMO.

Re: '10 NV PK Nolan Kohorst

Just wondering if you still feel this way. :smile2:

Of course not. Let me amend my earlier statement:

The number of kickers we target and yet still have trouble finding quality options is slightly ridiculous.

Update on Kohorst from Jim Stefani's recruiting blog

(2008)
Kohorst was All Sunrise, All Southern Nevada, All State as a junior. He hit 10 of 14 field goals, best of 54 yrds. I saw the 75 yrd kickoff. Was amazing. His team was penalized and had to kick from the 25. Kicked it into the end zone. That was the night that he kicked a 51 and 54 yard field goals. He outright won 4 of the games for his team this past season. Missed one PA all year. He is punting high and long this summer. Should be ready for fall ball. He was also All State pitcher this year as well as Eagle Scout with near 4.0 grades. He’s got it all.

2009:
Kohorst named to Nevada "All decade team"
