I trust the coaching staff so far, but are they outsmarting themselves by looking for recruits who aren't garnering huge interest from other schools?

In any case, I hope not and I like the idea of a 6'5'' defensive end getting some leverage on a OT.

BuffStampede now has Mathewes on the public list of commits and Ralphie Report has published a commitment article here.

So this thread can now go active in our public forum.

Welcome Mr. Mathewes!

Love the film! Late bloomer? Surprised he doesn't have more offers with film like that.

Sweet. We needed a DE. Love the size. Hope the staff found an unturned stone here.

Welcome Mr. Mathewes.

Welcome Mr. Mathewes.

I'm not sure he stays at DE in the long run. Definite redshirt and develop type player who may be a DT in 2-3 years.

The recruiting by this staff is a complete mystery.

Referring to Duff's post above, o_robbie, I think the answer to your post is that you are right -- it is a bit of a mystery. HCMM has a rep for identifying and recruiting players for what position he sees them developing into in a few years. Much harder to get a read on things when that's the mentality instead of us being able to look at guys who are currently playing a position and see that they are physically ready to do the same things from the same spot on a Pac-12 field.

If Mac2 isn't, in fact, better at this than most coaches then we're in trouble. On paper, this class doesn't impress. (Speaking generally here. Mathewes looks pretty good to me on film. Lack of offers concerns me, though, and that's what I think I addressed above. This recruiting is outside the box thinking.)

Welcome aboard, Michael.

He seems to possess good motor and pursuits well. He may not have the explosiveness, but if he bulks up a little without losing too much quickness, I think he could be a solid contributor for us. He reminds me of Derek Wolfe a little.

Yes, post from Adam (Rivals). FYI - Was told that Mathewes will be a three-star prospect in the next round of updates. He was the best defensive player on a very good Mission Viejo team this fall.

I don't see enough explosiveness to be recruited as a BCS level DE. If he has the frame to become a DT or even an OT, that's what Nik is saying. You got to really want it to put in what that takes though.

Very encouraging. I wonder if he'll get knocked down to a 2 for having the temerity to sign with us.

Dude is ripped for being as big as he is. Probably moves to DT eventually but I'd like to see him get a fair shake at DE. We could really use the length on the edge.

I love how hard this staff works to turn up players.

Welcome Michael.

Agreed! And to faint acknowledgement. Look forward to this staff getting a full shot to show what they can accomplish given time. This team will very likely gain talent and depth in 2014. We shall see. Go Buffs!

With offers from Yale, Penn, Holy Cross, and Army we can assume that he is not a risk in the classroom.
