2018/19 off-season Buff soccer news & awards (Schedule out- season opener 8/22 hosting Drake.)

The soccer team is on their way to France. Safe, timely and fun travels to them (while of course also kicking A on the field).

Too many goals to keep up with - hope the opposition in the next match is a lot better.

Looked at the video link in your last post. Looked like they were playing a high school team. Buffs women were notably bigger, faster, stronger. Don't want this to sound wrong but compared to the Buffs some of the French team looked notably non-athletic.

Trips like this are great to build team unity and to reward the team for lots of hard work but some competitive games would help them as well.

Some of these "pro" women's teams in Europe are not very good. I remember basketball beating teams by huge amounts on the last trip, then they played a higher level pro team and they did not fare so well. The video made the other team look bad but losing by 11 in soccer says it all.

Time for match #2.

Edit - From the picture, Buff starters are (From left to right (jersey #))-
Bottom row:
Palangi (11)
Ferry (5)
Tompkins (0)
Groark (9)
Weiner (24)
Zuniga (19)

Top row:
Aaknes (15- I believe - full # not visible)
Shymka (20)
Sharts (21)
Kornieck (22)
Loren (13)

Based on the final score (5-0) and the number of scoring chances the French side had (based on CU soccer tweets), looks like this match was much more competitive than the 1st one on this French trip.

The 2nd half goals-

SAINT CYPRIEN, France — The Colorado soccer team closed out its 2019 foreign tour with a 3-0 win over FC Saint. Cyprien on Saturday.

The Buffaloes improved to 6-0 in international play across their last two foreign trips. CU did not allow a goal in France, outscoring opponents 19-0.

Senior Tatum Barton scored a brace and sophomore Emily Groark closed the evening out with her second goal of the tour.

Saturday's finale was the most tightly contested of the three matches. It took both sides a few minutes to size each other up in the opening minutes. It was Saint Cyprien that broke the ice, putting the first ball on net in the 8th minute.
...

The Buffs made a pit stop on the way to the match, stopping off at beach in Saint Cyprien before heading to the stadium.

Saturday's match was the most attended of the three. Colorado has had a dedicated group of supporters at all three matches but the local Saint Cyprien supporters came out in impressive numbers.
The team will relax on Sunday in Montpellier before jumping a bus to Geneva, Switzerland on Monday to travel back to Colorado.

As with volleyball, have found a resource (http://woso-stats.ml/college/2019/schedule/20) that starts putting all soccer teams' schedules together as other teams release their schedules. For the Buffs, looks like 4 early season matches have been listed in other teams schedules, with all 4 to be played in Boulder. Included in the list is a couple tough-looking matches against a couple old Big 12 rivals, who were in last year's NCAA tournament, as well as a Boston Univ. team that also made it to the Dance.

(Note- thanks to the Buff thread in the bigsoccer forum thread (http://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/2019-colorado-buffaloes.2103082/page-2) for the link.)

Note- per the link in the above post, a couple additional non-conference matches are now showing for the Buffs, the 1st 2 where the Buffs will be on the road:
  • a CHALLENGING match-up vs. last season's national champion Florida State on Sept. 12th and
  • visiting DU on 9/21.
Edit - per FSU's schedule (https://seminoles.com/sports/soccer/schedule/season/2019-20/), looks like that match is scheduled for 7:00 PM their time, and will be on some ACC network or stream (I couldn't figure out which).

A couple more pieces of the Buffs non-conference schedule is now known from other teams' schedules (and the link provided in post #29):
(***Note- as was pointed out in a post in the Buff's thread of the bigsoccer forum (http://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/2019-colorado-buffaloes.2103082/page-3), the match against the Buffs is the only match the Bears are playing against a Colorado school this season, which indicates the "Colorado Cup" may not "be a thing" any more, or at least not this season. I have been feeling the Cup was creating RPI challenges for the Buffs, so can't say I'll be devastated if that's the case, although it did seem to be a little fun thing to compete for during non-conference.)

I'm not sure whether or not we now know the full Buff's non-conference schedule We now know of 8 non-conference matches, while they played 9 last season. If the non-conf. schedule is NOT complete, it looks like another match could still be fit in the 8/28-8/30 time frame, as currently there's a gap between known matches scheduled on 8/25 and 9/1 (both Sundays). And/ or, they could also have a (probable east coast/ southern road?) match around 9/15 after playing at FSU on 9/12.

Schedule released. Go Bufffs!!!

With non-conference being much tougher this season, there should be no doubt the Buffs will get serious tournament consideration as long as they get enough W's.

Colorado set for 12 televised matches

June 26, 2019

By: Seth Pringle, Assistant SID

BOULDER – University of Colorado head soccer coach Danny Sanchez announced a 20-match schedule for the 2019 season on Wednesday. 11 of CU's matches will be televised.

The Buffaloes will face five teams that finished inside the top-7 in RPI and nine in the top-50. CU's 2019 opponents combined for a 240-142-33 record last season.

The Buffs open the season hosting three NCAA Tournament teams in a string of their first six home matches. Colorado opens the season against Drake (Aug. 22) and Patriot League champion Boston University (Aug. 25). The team remains at home for the season's second weekend taking on Kent State (Aug. 29) and former Big 12 rival Texas (Sept. 1). The homestand closes with Austin Peay (Sept. 5) and another former conference foe in Baylor (Sept. 8).

"This is the toughest non-conference schedule that we have put together since we arrived at CU," Sanchez noted. "We were able to get three top-10 teams from last season, including two at home with Texas and Baylor. Boston University is another NCAA Tournament team last season that we get at home. Then we have two tough draws on the road against the defending national champions in Florida State and Denver."
...

Colorado returns second-team All-American Taylor Kornieck for her senior season. She finished second on the team with a career-best 28 points, despite missing four matches to injury. Her 10 assists marked a CU single-season record. Kornieck jumped up the record lists at Colorado last season. She leads the Buffs with 1.20 points per game in her three seasons. Kornieck moved into second, averaging .45 goals per game and is fourth in points (72), fourth in goals (27) and third in assists (18).

Also returning for their senior campaigns are Jalen Tompkins, Tatum Barton, Kelsey Aaknes, Stephanie Zuniga and Camilla Shymka.

No CSU and Air Force, I wonder if the Colorado Cup has been axed. While it was a great event, I wonder if the bad RPI of all schools in CO except for DU and CU led to CU not being in the tourney last year.

Yes, they dropped many of the instate games due to the negative impact on the RPI which was a problem last season. CSU was a 0-0 draw and they are not a good program. That right there might have been the difference. So no more Colorado Cup.

Right now Northern Colorado is the second best program in the state of Colorado.

At the same time you could argue that not winning v Utah on the last day of the season didn't help either.

Personally, I would rather see Colorado College or Wyoming on the schedule than Austin Peay State.

This season's schedule looks very tough. Baylor, Texas and Florida State in the non-conference schedule and only five home conference matches v six away, with the final three on the road.

RG needs to work his fund raising magic to get lights at Prentup so games aren't starting at 3 pm on weekdays.
