As with other individual sports, I'm setting up this thread to cover all the news and action for the track and field Teams' regular outdoor season.
(Pac 12 Championships start May 5th, so this thread will cover the teams, both men's and women's, until then.)
_______________________________________________________________________________________

To start the season, one of only two Buff home meets for the season is tomorrow and Saturday.

Meet info - http://cubuffs.com/documents/2018/3/12//2018_Jerry_Quiller_Classic_PDF_Small.pdf
(From the (prelim) schedule, looks like tomorrow is only field events, which start at 3:00 with the hammer throw. Saturday's action, both on the track and in more field events, starts at 11:00.

Also, looks like there may be no live results. But assume, after the fact, "Results: Meet results will be posted at www.cubuffs.com , www.TFRRS.org and www.DirectAthletics.com ")
________________________________________________________________

Edit- Wanted to add links to the official webpages where season bests are kept. This is important because, as far I've read(***) -
  • For multi-event athletes, the top 24 marks in the country by a designated date (usually right after conference championships complete for all the teams) for each gender get to go to the NCAA championships and
  • For all other individual events, the top 48 times, distances or heights in each preliminary region (west and east) by athletes who accept entry for each event by a designated date (usually right after conference championships complete for all the teams) get to go to the NCAA preliminaries to try and qualify for the championships.
  • For the 4X100M and 4X400 meter relays, it's the Top 24 times in each of the 2 regions that qualify for the preliminaries.
Links are-
For multi-events (National bests) -
Men's Decathlon- https://www.tfrrs.org/lists/2279.html?gender=m#39
Women's Heptathlon - https://www.tfrrs.org/lists/2279/2018_NCAA_Division_I_Outdoor_Qualifying_List/2018/o?gender=f#40

For other events (West region bests) -
Men's - https://www.tfrrs.org/lists/2281/2018_NCAA_Div._I_West_Outdoor_Qualifying_List/2018/o?gender=m
Women's - https://www.tfrrs.org/lists/2281/2018_NCAA_Div._I_West_Outdoor_Qualifying_List/2018/o?gender=f
(As I write this edit April 20th, the season is still relatively young as to athlete working towards their best marks, so it's often more helpful to look at LAST season's marks to get a ROUGH idea of what marks MIGHT be needed to qualify for regionals. Last year's marks for Western men can be found at https://www.tfrrs.org/lists/1926/2017_NCAA_Div._I_West_Outdoor_Qualifying_(FINAL)/2017/o?gender=m, while the women's is at https://www.tfrrs.org/lists/1926/2017_NCAA_Div._I_West_Outdoor_Qualifying_(FINAL)/2017/o?gender=f .)

(*** One thing that's confusing me is I've seen a couple tweets by Coach Lindsey Malone where she's indicated one or another of her athletes have qualified for regionals (believe in the high jump) based on a height, but that obviously contradict what I wrote above about it just being the top 48 in each region with no set height known yet.)

Further note- The NCAA also allows a couple type of conversions be used to calculate the top marks-
  • For a few distances on the track, marks in NCAA non-standard races are converted up or down to be used for qualifying purposes. (For example- times in mile races outdoor can be converted to 1500M times.) The conversion factors for this are at http://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/NCAA_Track_Event_Conversions.pdf .
  • Also, the NCAA has a SEPARATE APP (see http://www.ustfccca.org/meets-results/ncaa-championship-qualifying-criteria#d1OTF for the link) that converts all track times for events competed at altitude to official "sea level" times. (It's the converted times that show up in the above linked-to tfrrs.org top marks lists.) In general, middle distance (800M) and longer races run at altitude calculate to FASTER "sea level" times, while shorter races (400M and less) at altitude calculate to SLOWER times at sea level.

BOULDER - The University of Colorado track and field team got a good start to the outdoor season with seven first-place finishes at the Jerry Quiller Classic here Saturday at Potts Field.

WHAT HAPPENED

The Women also performed well on Saturday, with many finishing in the top-five of their respective events. The Buffs had three girls finish in the top-five of the 100 meter hurdles, racking up first, fourth, and fifth place. All preparing to compete in the heptathlon the multi runners of Maja Donzo-Wichhart (14.29), Michaela Wenning (14.98) and Drianna Mustin (15.05) all finished in the top-five.
...

UP NEXT
The Buffs have meets in Fort Collins at the Fum McGraw next weekend, as well as the Pac-12 vs. Big Ten Challenge in Tempe, Arizona.

Head Coach Wetmore Statement:
On the overall performance of Colorado:

"It's very early, the indoor NCCA'S were just a week ago. So the function of this weekend is to find out how training has been going for the last month and a half, to get our toe into the water of some of the outdoor events that we don't have indoor, like the 400 hurdles say, or the javelin, or the hammer."

On some top performances
"In general, pretty good performances. It's hard to tell if the good day made them unusually good. This is a pretty good day for March 17th. Very good 400 hurdles for the women, those are times that will advance to the regionals I think. For the first outdoor meet of the year, to get a regional qualifying mark is more than we would hope for."

"Good short hurdles for Maja [Wichhart-Donzo], and a pretty good 200 for Rajon [O'Quinn], I think her fastest outdoor opener ever! So, set up pretty good for the things that are coming, learned some useful things."

On Next Weekend
"Next week we take a very big group down to Tempe, almost our full team. Certainly, however good the weather was today, it will be a little better for sprinting, jumping, and hurdling down there. So one step at a time, getting ready for the PAC-12 and hopefully some people in the NCAA."

______________________________________________________________________________________________

As typically occurs in the 1st meet of the year, looks like it was, in general, mainly only the younger distance running Buffs who competed in the longer runs, with the sprinters and field athletes more fully participating. Sounds like from Coach Wetmore (see quote pasted above), we will see more of the full team next weekend at the "Pac-12 vs. Big Ten Challenge" in Tempe, with other in Fort Collins. I can't remember CU participating at that "Challenge" meet previously; always fun to have some inter-conference competition early in the year.

Article on the track meet starting today. (Per the below, as seems to be common for most of these regular season meets, MOST of the events are on the 2nd day.)-

BOULDER — The Colorado Buffalo track and field program is headed to Tempe, Ariz. to compete with seven other ranked teams from across the country in the Pac-12+/Big Ten Challenge being hosted by Arizona State at Sun Angel Stadium.

This is the fourth year the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge has been in existence, but first time the Buffaloes are competing in it.

Pac-12 programs joining the Buffs in attendance are both Arizona State squads, California's men's and women's team, along with honorary Pac-12 member for the weekend LSU (No. 26 men's, No. 9 women's), who was a late addition due to a last-minute scratch on the Pac-12 side.

The Big Ten will be represented by Indiana, the Nebraska Cornhuskers' ninth-ranked men's team and 16th-ranked women's squad, No. 24/18 Michigan and No. 16/NF Penn State.

Women's Team Ranked
Colorado's women's team was ranked No. 15 in the preseason USTFCCCA NCAA Division I National Team Computer Rankings that came out on March 20. The Buffaloes are the third-highest ranked women's team in the field this weekend, trailing No. 9 LSU (the "+" category in the Challenge) and one spot behind the host Sun Devils.

The Pac-12 features a total of five women's programs who were in the preseason top 25 and are joined by No. 2 Oregon, No. 4 USC, No. 10 Stanford and the Sun Devils at No. 14.

Competition Schedule
Friday—Five events will run on the first of the two-day meet: the men's and women's hammer throw, men's and women's javelin and the men's 3000 meter steeplechase. Competition begins at 2 p.m. MT with the women's hammer throw and the last event of the evening is at 8 p.m. with the men's steeplechase (CU does not have anyone entered in that race).

Saturday—A total of 33 events are on the slate for day two. The first field event (the women's discus) is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. MT, while the first track event (women's 100 meter hurdles) is scheduled to start at 6:20 p.m.

TEMPE, Ariz. — The Pac-12+/Big Ten Challenge finished up Saturday at Arizona State's Sun Angel Stadium with the University of Colorado track and field team fielding three first-place finishes as well as numerous Buffs placing in the top five.

The women's team finished in sixth with 75.5 points, while the men's team finished in seventh with 64 points.

FIRST-PLACE FINISHES
Sophomore Eriana Henderson recorded a leap of 20-1.75 (6.14) in the women's long jump; in the women's 1,500-meter run, sophomore Sage Hurta notched a time of 4:17.04; and senior Ryan Forsyth recorded a time of 8:14.41 in the men's 3,000-meter run, all three marks or times the top in field in their respective events.

"For this point in the season and given the personnel that we brought here, I'm pretty happy" said head coach Mark Wetmore. "They did better than I expected."

PERSONAL BESTS
Henderson and Hurta both notched personal bests with their first-place finishes on Saturday. Henderson's mark in the long jump bested her previous high of 19-7.5 (5.98) that she set last year, while Hurta's mark in the 1,500-meter run topped her previous high of 4:18.42 that she set last year as well.
...

NEXT UP: The Buffaloes travel to California for the Stanford Invitational from March 30-31.

QUOTEABLE
Head Coach Mark Wetmore
On Sage Hurta winning the 1500m
"Sage's performance was a little surprising. It was a little faster than I expected. Distance runners at this time in the season are hunkered down into some pretty serious training with a lot of volume in their legs. For her to run 4:17, is great."

On Eriana Henderson winning the long jump
"That was a really big surprise. It's probably an NCAA preliminary round-qualifying mark, but a nice PR for her and 10 points for the team."

On Ryan Forsyth winning the 3000m
"Ryan had a careful, methodical, tactical win in the 3,000. It's not an event that can qualify for the NCAA and not a commonly run event, but a good opportunity for him and the other fellas to practice good tactics and racing instincts."

On what the team can improve on going into the rest of the outdoor season
"The way we can most improve is to get some banged up people healthy and fit. We have all of our NCAA Indoor Track competitors that we deliberately held out this meet, which are some of the best people on our team. We can, a month from now, be full strength and have everybody healthy and be quite a bit better."

On the additions of Davion Taylor and Aaron Haigler after they finished spring football practice
"I think they both have the opportunity down the road to help us some, but they're right out of spring ball. I think they had a very hard practice yesterday and then caught a flight last night. They're both a little sore coming into this competition. We look forward to them being exclusively track athletes for three or four weeks and see what kind of a contribution they can make."

Buffs host their last home meet of the season this Saturday.

"
BOULDER — The University of Colorado track and field program will welcome the largest field – nearly 1,400 entries – in the history of the Colorado Invitational this weekend when the Buffs host its home outdoor meet at Potts Field.

The meet was originally scheduled to run Friday and Saturday, but due to expected inclement weather all events will now take place on Saturday. Admission to Potts Field is $8 for adults or free for kids 12 and under.

"In my time it is the largest meet we've ever had," head coach Mark Wetmore said. "We are closing in on 1,400 entries, 20-something teams in one form or another and in just the men's 1500 alone there's 101 entries, so it will be a logistical challenge for sure, but we are on it."
...

"We will be watching for developmental steps in our progress towards the Pac-12 Championship and NCAA's," Wetmore said. "We are hoping if the weather is good for some NCAA preliminary round qualifying marks, no reason we wouldn't be able to get some of those out of this meet, and then learning about the newest of our people and youngest of our people. Better weather helps all of those, it looks like Saturday will be pretty good."

The field includes over 20 collegiate teams. With the adjusted schedule, both track and field events will now begin at 10 a.m. Saturday. The last scheduled event for the day is the women's 4x400 meter relay, slated to begin at 5:35 p.m.

Possible live results (???) - Not noted anywhere for this meet, but the other home meet had live results link added via Twitter, so hopefully may be available at some point.

Looks like they've moved the schedule for today's (Saturday's) meet back a couple hours. (Hope everyone's careful, especially being sure not to be hit by any of the throwing equipment (javelin, hammer, etc.).)

Starting yesterday, it's a BUSY rest of the week for the track and field teams, with I assume ALL the healthy (and non-redshirting) track and field Buffs in action, with the below article having the teams competing in 3 meets in California. (The cubuffs.com schedule also shows a meet at CSU this Friday and Saturday, but the article doesn't mention that one at all, so assume it was decided not to send any Buffs there.?.)

BOULDER – The Colorado track and field team will be sending athletes to compete in Azusa, California at the Bryan Clay Invitational and to Stanford to compete in the Cardinal Classic. The Bryan Clay Invitational will kick off with the multi events on Wednesday and Thursday, followed by the running and field events on Thursday and Friday. The Cardinal Classic will be held on Friday and Saturday.

The Colorado women's track and field team is ranked No. 16 in the nation for the second week in a row. These NCAA rankings came out on Monday, April 16. This is following the women's weekend at the Colorado School of Mines Kit Mayer Invitational and the NoCo Challenge.

Head Coach Wetmore on the Bryan Clay Multi Meet:
"Annually Azusa Pacific co-hosts a decathlon/heptathlon in conjunction with Mt. San Antonio College and that is Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Our decathletes and heptathletes are there with Coach (Lindsey) Malone. Historically it's a place where we get some of our best marks of the year and it is their first multi-event of the outdoor season so it's their chance to demonstrate that they belong at the Pac-12 in three weeks. It's an event that Coach Malone and the multi athletes look forward to all year long."

On the Bryan Clay Invitational:
"There is also a meet at Azusa Pacific that is all the other events. We'll have a handful of people there. Some of the people who are trying to earn their way to the Pac-12 as well."

On the Cardinal Classic:
"The bulk of the team though will be at Palo Alto at a meet called the Cardinal Classic that is more of a team meet. That is the established varsity going up against more full teams from around the country. Traditionally it is a place where good marks are achieved and we have qualified many NCAA preliminary round athletes from Palo Alto throughout the years".
Overall, Coach Wetmore said, "What we are looking for, is to be competitive, to be visible in lots of events, and have personal bests and qualifying marks by Saturday night."

Heptathletes and Decathletes Finish Up Their Competition in Azusa with Impressive Point Totals

BOULDER – The Colorado track & field decathletes and heptathletes finished their competition in Azusa late on Thursday night. The Buffs completed the two-day competition with a few personal bests and impressive final scores.

Junior Maja Wichhart-Donzo had a great two days in Azusa. She came away from day one with three event personal records as well as an overall point personal record. On Thursday, she set a PR in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:16.70. "She jumped up to number 3 all time in the 800 meters, She is No. 4 all time for the Buffs. The last time for that to happen was Abrianna Torres several years ago, she was an amazing athlete herself and went to the NCAA championships. Maja has done a tremendous job, she is ranked in the pac-12 in scoring range now in the heptathlon, and in triple jump, and high jump," Assistant Coach Lindsey Malone told me.

Not far behind Wichhart-Donzo was Michaela Wenning. Wenning's day one point total was a great personal record for her, and she went on to set a few more during her events on day two. "Both Maja and Michaela PR'd by over 300 points. Those are two very solid scores going into Pac-12's. We are looking to improve upon those scores of course at Pac-12's, but going into Pac-12's this gives us a really good confidence boost that things are going in the right direction, and I think these women can see themselves at the NCAA level now which is pretty exciting," Malone said.

For the men, Andrew Ghizzone had a great two days in Azusa. He finished his first day with a personal record point total of 3692. He finished first in his group in the men's 1500-meter run with a time of 4:25.24. "On the men's side we also had some pretty impressive things happen. [Andrew] finished off the day doing a tremendous job winning the 1500 out of that really elite section, getting a lifetime PR. He is a very consistent performer, and that's one of the things that you want the most in the multi, is that they can go out and consistently perform," Malone said. He finished out the competition with a total point score of 7083, placing him ninth in his group.

"Overall I am very impressed with the team they have done a great job, I am really excited for the Pac-12 Championships for combined events," Malone said.

Up next for the Buffs is the running and field events in Azusa as well as the Cardinal Classic in Stanford. Also looks like the Buffs are getting some solid early results in field events at the Cardinal Classic-

Some more nice results, including at least some possible/ probable (???) NCAA regional qualifying times in the men's and women's 5K invitational races that ended today's action at the Cardinal Classic.

Last year, the 48th time in the West for the 800M was 2:07.78. E. Mann already has a 2:06.93 from an earlier race this season.)

Results post- part 2 (the top 5K Buff results)-

(Last year, the 48h time in the west was 16:15.06. Also, Ms. Benner already has a 15:47.23 "in the books" from an earlier race this season.)

(Last year, the 48th time in the west was 14:00.15.)

Some Buffs evidently up in Wyoming (at a meet not even in the schedule) doing some good work.

With it getting late in the regular season, it's definitely getting to be "put up or shut up time" for track and field athletes as they try to check the box of obtaining NCAA regional qualifying times and marks. (See the bottom of the OP for qualifying criteria and link to the lists that shows how marks match-up so far for western region qualifying.)

With some Buffs, as noted above, in Wyoming (mainly the shorter distance and field Buffs), and others (mainly the middle distance and distance crew) going to the Oregon State-hosted "OSU High Performance Meet", sounding from Twitter like a few Buffs have earned probable NCAA regional qualifying times today. A few tweets with some highlights.-

(As noted near the bottom of the OP, times in the shorter distances actually convert to SLOWER times. However, even after conversion, his time is still converting to a solid 14.15, which still would have qualified to last year's regionals, and hopefully will again this season. (Last year, 14.20 was the 48th qualifying time for western regionals.))

(All 3 times should EASILY qualify for regionals! Great performances all around! Steeplechase U. representing!)

(Last season, just under 9 minutes was required to qualify, so hopefully Mr. Peterman's time should be enough to get qualifying out of the way.)

(Sophomore Herrera's time would have qualified last season (the 48th time was right around 14 minutes), so hopefully will again this year.)

(Note- There were some other great event wins and so forth, but I'm concentrating on NCAA qualfying times here. Of course, I'm sure the team is REALLY looking to 1st peak at the upcoming Pac 12 Championships, so hopefully many more top times and marks will be reached then. Although, it is nice, especially for the distrance runners, to get qualifying out of the way ahead of time. Then, if a Pac 12 race is shaping up to be tactical, the runner doesn't have to start pushing the pace too early in the race to insure a qualifying time, which could kill their kick and minimize the points they might earn for their team.)

Buffs Shine At OSU High Performance; Simpson Sets American Record

The University of Colorado outdoor track team sent performers to two meets Friday, the Wyoming 7220 Invitational in Laramie, and the Oregon State High Performance Meet in Corvallis, while one of its most visible alums celebrated by running an American record in Iowa.

Sprinters, hurdlers and field event specialists competed in Wyoming's meet in the afternoon, while middle and distance runners raced the first of two days later in the day in Oregon.

At the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Jenny Simpson (Colorado '08), an Iowa native who already owned the American record in the indoor 2-mile, added the outdoor one to her career resume. In running the race in a time of 9 minutes and 16.78 seconds, she lopped over three seconds off the previous record of 9:20.25, which was set by Shannon Rowbury in 2014. Simpson was born in Webster City before her family moved out of state when she was a youth.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Adam Peterman and Erin Clark their season-best times in their respective 3,000-meter steeplechase races, each setting a facility record in the process, two of several highlights by the Buffaloes here Friday night.
Peterman won his race by almost 12 seconds in posting an 8:54.86 time, while Clark led a 1-2-3 Buffalo finish with a 10:04.37 clocking, edging sophomore teammate Sage Hurta (10:04.85). Junior Val Constien (10:05.73) claimed the bronze spot, while Baylee Jones finished 12th in 11:24.34. It was the first steeplechase event of the year for Clark, Hurta and Jones, while Constien's time was a season-best and just .08 shy of matching her career PR and 10 seconds faster than last week.
"I'm sure the results look like they were all running together like the three musketeers, but that wasn't the case," CU head coach Mark Wetmore said of the 1-2-3 finish. "They kept changing positions along the way, depending who was running well at a particular time or water-jumped well.
"It was a real nice race for Adam, a week ago he ran 9:15, and this was just his second steeplechase in the last year," Wetmore added. "He had some Achilles tendon problems he battled for a long time and last week was his firsts steeple in a long time. So that was some nice improvement this week for him."
Peterman and the three CU women are now qualified for the NCAA's Championships in June, according to Wetmore. "Tonight it was definitely about the steeplechase, and that (qualifying for the NCAA's) is what we're looking to accomplish at this time of the year."
