Best wishes to the track and field team as the last conference championships of the academic year for any Buff sport are competed this Friday-Sunday!

Go Buffs!!!

Looks like all field events are going to be viewable either via stream and/ or the Pac 12 Networks. If I'm reading it right, only the Sunday action on the track is scheduled to be shown, with all the races (along with field events that day) on the Pac 12 Networks. (As a big T & F fan, a little bummed it sounds like there's no live coverage of the racing or multi-event action planned for Friday or Saturday. Can't imagine it would be that expensive to throw a few cameras around the track to cover the action, especially at one of the U.S's supposedly top film schools.)

BOULDER – The Colorado track and field program is set to compete in the 2021 Pac-12 Championships Friday through Sunday at the Katherine B. Loker Stadium hosted by USC.

The Colorado men have a number of athletes ranked in the top-10 in the Pac-12 this season and will look to get on the board early with Paxton Smith, Ethan Powell and Ryan Robinson all ranked in the top-10 in the 10,000 final Friday night as they lead a group of seven CU men around the track 25 times.

The first Buffs on the track will be the decathletes as Wyatt Rhoads, Davis Butte and Nick Bianco are all ranked in the top-10 in the conference and will start their first five events Friday.

Other prelims to watch for Friday include Aaron McCoy who is fourth in the conference in the 400 hurdles, Garrett Nelson and Kellen Monestime as they try to advance to finals. The hammer and javelin will also kick off Friday with Dominique Williams ranked 10th in the conference in the hammer.

Moving to Saturday, Ronald Sayles is ranked sixth in the 400 in the conference and leads a quartet of men in the prelims while Mark Perry competes in the 100 meter dash prelims. The final major scoring opportunities for Colorado come Sunday with Eduardo Herrera (3rd) and John Dressel (5th) leading a posse of eight Buffs in the 5,000-meter final Friday evening along with the two relays that are ranked in the top-six in the conference.

Turning to the women, there are two women leading the conference in their respected events, Sage Hurta in the 800 and Madie Boreman in the steeplechase. Both women are former Pac-12 Champions at the steeplechase and Boreman will look to keep the CU women's conference streak going as the Buffs have not lost a conference steeplechase since Jenny Barringer's final conference title in 2009.

Hurta will lead Micaela Degenero around the track in the 800 as the senior looks to lower her own school record as she eyes the 2-minute barrier. Degenero also leads a strong group of women entered in the 1,500 as her, Boreman and Rachel McArthur are ranked two, four, seven in the conference, respectfully.

The early 10,000 final has Emily Covert in the top-10 leading the group of four that included Abby Nichols who is the lone Buff in the top-10 in the 5,000 Sunday evening.

Along with the two relays, Eriana Henderson, Abbey Glynn and Tamia Badal are all ranked in the top-10 in the 400 hurdles and could score some serious points for the Buffs.

Also for Colorado, Avery McMullen and Jada Green will start things off in the heptathlon and are in the top-10 looking to score points at a Pac-12 Championships for the first time.

The field events finals will all be live streamed while the two running finals Friday and Saturday will be aired along with the live events Sunday on the Pac-12 Network. For more information on heat sheets, schedules and viewing, visit pac-12.com/track-field/championships.

It's Championships Day 1!

Also, nice Buffzone article on senior leader and hurdler/ sprinter Eriana Henderson-

I don’t follow much but I’d imagine the indoor facility has had a huge impact on our track and field program. We used to only be a distance running program. Now we have a facility for all T&F disciplines. Has, in fact, our T&F program benefited?

Unofficially, looks like the Buffs are getting points (eight) in the 1st track finals of the Championships, with senior John Dressel finishing 2nd in the men's 10000M in a time (28:42.17) which should also easily qualify him for the NCAA West preliminary at that distance. (He already had a 5000M time which should also easily qualify him in that race.)

Congrats to him!

Edit- Missed it originally, but the Buffs also earned another point in the race via senior transfer Ryan Robinson finishing 8th.

Unofficially, looks like the CU women also had some great performances in the 10000M, and it looks like they'll earn 15 points overall, with grad transfer Abby Nichols finishing 2nd, RS freshman Emily Covert 4th and sophomore Elizabeth Constien 7th. (I would think the 1st 2 Buff's times also should EASILY qualify them for the prelims while the 3rd should be in unless there are some crazy times by quite a few runners at some of the other conference championships.)

Edit - As a sign how fast this race was, looks like the top 3 finishers all broke the previous Pac 12 meet record, while the top 7 broke the previous USC stadium record.

Also, looking at the Buff record books, looks like Ms. Nichol's time will slot her into #4 ALL-TIME as a Buff, while Ms. Covert's time looks to make her #7.

On the men's side, Mr. Dressel's time looks to move him to #5 all-time.

LOS ANGELES – The Colorado track and field women racked up 15 team points during the first day of competition at the 2021 Pac-12 Track and Field Championships here Friday, led by Abby Nichol's second place finish in the 10,000-meter run.

The senior transfer stamped her name in the CU record book in the first final on the track for the women as she ran 32:49.87 for 25 laps around the track for a second place finish. Her mark is fourth in CU history and would've ranked sixth in the NCAA before this conference weekend around the nation.

She was not alone as the Colorado women racked up all 15 team points in the final, the second-most points scored by a team in one event thus far. Emily Covert entered her name in the record book at eight in school history after running 33:17.82 for fourth overall. Her time would've marked 16th in the nation, securing her a spot in the NCAA West Preliminaries in two weeks. She could be joined by two other Buffs in two weeks as Elizabeth Constien ran 34:10.85 and picked up a pair of team points with a seventh place finish. Her mark is around top-50 in the nation while Kaitlyn Barthell will be close to the cut as her mark of 34:37.02 is around top-70 in the nation.

On the men's side, John Dressel entered his name in the CU outdoor record books for the first time after he ran 28:42.17 in the 10,000 to finish second. The senior was in position to take the title as he and Charles Hicks of Stanford hit the bell lap neck and neck, but Hicks dropped a 56-second final quarter to take the title. Dressel's time is good for a top-30 mark in the nation and is fifth in CU history. Transfer Ryan Robinson picked up a point for the men as well as he finished eighth in 29:22.40.

The CU women also secured a quarter of the spots in the final for the women's 1,500-meter run on Sunday with Rachel McArthur picking up the seventh qualifier spot in 4:19.30 while Madie Boreman ran 4:19.48 for a spot and Micaela Degenero ran 4:21.59 for a qualifying position.

Colorado also picked up a pair of finalists in both 400 hurdle events, securing at least three points for both genders. Eriana Henderson qualified with the fifth-best time on the women's side while Abbey Glynn qualified seventh in just her second-ever quarter-mile over hurdles for CU. Her mark of 59.10 is good for fifth in school history and is a top-60 time in the NCAA before this weekend.

On the men's side, Aaron McCoy qualified through to finals with a mark of 52.51 for the sixth spot, while Garrett Nelson was the final qualifier for Sunday's final at 52.65 seconds.

The other opportunity for Colorado to pick up points tomorrow began today with the women's heptathlon and men's decathlon. Avery McMullen and Jada Green are in scoring positions through the first four events of the heptathlon as McMullen is sixth with 3,293 points and Green is eighth with 3,159 points. Both women have arguably their strongest events left tomorrow, the long jump for McMullen and the javelin for Green.

On the men's side, Wyatt Rhoads, Davis Butte and Nick Bianco are all sitting just outside scoring positions through the first five events of the decathlon. Rhoads is in ninth with 3,496 points while Butte and Bianco sit in 12th and 13th. The men will look to pick up points in the throws and vault, especially for Butte and Bianco both of which have the ability to eclipse the 15-foot mark in the vault.

Tomorrow's action will see the prelims of the short hurdles, 800, 400, 100 and the finals of the steeplechase. Colorado will not have anyone in field events tomorrow. The men are sixth with nine points through three events scored while the women are tied for fourth.

Note - FINALLY some TV coverage today, beginning at 4:00 PM MT on the Pac 12 Networks.

"
LOS ANGELES – The Colorado track and field women's program finds themselves in fourth despite not having competed in the three of the five distance finals through two days of competition here at the 2021 Pac-12 Track and Field Championships.

The women put up some major points today in the women's steeplechase as Madie Boreman finished fourth overall in 9:52.11 and freshman Alisa Meraz-Fishbein picked up a point with an eighth-place finish at 10:32.37.

The other area that Colorado picked up points was in the completion of the women's heptathlon where Avery McMullen finished seventh with a score of 5,314 points while Jada Green finished just outside of scoring with 5,232 points in ninth. The women both enter the record books as they knocked off the final sub-5,000 mark this season and now sit in ninth and 10th, respectfully, in school history after the javelin implement change.

Colorado also secured points in tomorrow's finals with Micaela Degenero taking the fastest qualifying mark in the women's 800 prelims in 2:04.23. Her time is sixth in school history and a top-20 time in the nation this season. She was joined by Sage Hurta who has the third-best prelim time at 2:06.56, promising at least three team points for the women.

Also securing a spot in finals was senior Eriana Henderson who has set herself up for an extremely busy day tomorrow after running 13.68 and qualifying for finals in the 100 hurdles. Henderson will run both the 100 and 400 hurdles tomorrow along with both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays for Colorado.

On the men's side, Wyatt Rhoads made a comeback in the men's decathlon to finish fifth overall after finishing the first day in ninth. He scored 6,863 points and led teammates Nick Bianco and Davis Butte who finished in 12th and 13th, respectfully.

The CU men also promised themselves three team points tomorrow as Tyler Williams and Ronald Sayles took the final two qualifier positions in tomorrow's 400-meter run final. Williams had the seventh-best time at 46.93 while Sayles was the final qualifier at 47.20.

Tomorrows action will be televised live on the Pac-12 Network as finals begin at 4 p.m. MT with the men's 4x100-meter relay. The Buffs have finalists in the women's 1,500, 800, 400 hurdles and 5,000 tomorrow along with both relays. The men have finalists on the track in the 400 and 5,000 along with both relays. The Buffs will also compete in the men's discus, women's high jump and men's pole vault.

Article on the last day of the Championships for the Buffs. (Definitely an "agony of defeat" moment in the women's 4X400M relay that cost the team a couple spots in the team points competition, but a solid competition overall.)

"
LOS ANGELES – Colorado track and field senior Sage Hurta captured the women's 800-meter Pac-12 Championships here Sunday in the final day of competition at the 2021 Pac-12 Championships.

The women finished fifth in the team standings with 74.5 points and were poised to finished third before a trip in the women's 4x400-meter relay cost the team valuable points and allowed Arizona State and Washington to pass the Buffs. The men finished ninth overall with 42 points. The USC women defended their home track with 162.50 points for the title while the Oregon men stole the show with 185 points.

"Had we not had the mishap in the relay we would have been third," said head coach Mark Wetmore. "So other than the last two minutes it was an excellent weekend, lots of people contributing. People came here and rose up in a way that we aspire to, but don't immediately expect. So a really good weekend for the women, almost third place just the relay problem cost us that. Sage had a nice win for us in a fast time. Abby Nichols I think is our high points scorer, great in two killer events, but great weekend all the way around with lots of people contributing."

Hurta ran away from the competition and never was challenged in the 800, breaking the stadium record in 2:01.53 after leading from the gun. Her title gives the Buffs back-to-back titles after Elissa Mann took the crown in 2019. They are the first two to win in the event for the women since Lee Ballanger last did it in 1980.

The top points-scorer for the women was Abby Nichols who captured a pair of runner-up finishes in the 5,000 and 10,000. She finished second in the 5,000-meter run today in 15:44.47, the seventh-fastest time in CU history. This comes less than 48 hours after running the fourth-fastest time in school history in the 10,000 Friday evening.

Another Buff that added an incredible double was Micaela Degenero. The junior started the day in the finals of the women's 1,500 where she finished second overall in 4:15.80 ahead of teammates Rachel McArthur in fourth (4:16.81) and Madie Boreman in sixth (4:17.57). Less than an hour after the completion of that race, Degenero was back on the track and finished fifth in the women's 800 in 2:05.78, earning the second-most points for Colorado in the span of just an hour.

"Coming into this year Abby certainly would not have been on the form chart for so many points and beaten so many marquee runners," said Wetmore. "She's done a lot of good work since she got here, a lot of really good work since October, and just keeps getting better and better. I think she even got better from Friday to Sunday so she was wonderful. Her pal, Micaela Degenero had a great weekend for us, what a hard double to run the 1500 and come back in 50 minutes and score well in the 800. So those two were among the stars."

Senior Eriana Henderson also had a busy day for the Buffs as she raced four times in the final few hours. She helped the women's 4x100 finish seventh in 46.51 seconds, then picked up a point in the 100 hurdles in 13.78 seconds. She followed up that performance with a fourth-place finish in the 400 hurdles in 57.69 seconds, just two hundredths of a second off her personal best time that she set at the NCAA Championships in 2019. She finished it off with the 4x400 relay but was tripped with 10 meters to go heading to the second exchange.

Henderson was joined by freshman Abbey Glynn in all of the events except the short hurdles but highlighted the day with a fifth-place finish in the 400 hurdles in just her third-ever quarter mile over hurdles. Her mark of 58.07 seconds is now fourth in school history behind just Gabby Scott, Henderson and Leona Russell.

The final point and half picked up for Colorado was from Kylee Harr who cleared 5-7 in the women's high jump to enter a four-way tie for sixth.

The men's side was dominated by 400-meter runners today as the men picked up 21 team points between the 400-meter run, 400-meter hurdles and both relays. After the men's 4x100-meter relay placed eighth for a point in 40.75 seconds, Ronald Sayles and Tyler Williams started the sprinter scoring with a fifth and sixth-place finish in 47.43 seconds and 47.61 seconds in the open 400, respectfully. Not too long later, Aaron McCoy and Garrett Nelson repeated the performance with their own fifth and sixth-place finishes in 52.17 and 52.71 in the 400 hurdles. The final large sum of points came in the 4x400 as the CU quartet of Williams, McCoy, Ian Gilmore and Sayles finished third overall in 3:09.01.

"We scored well in the men's 400, above better than the form chart would have predicted and same thing in the 400 hurdles," said Wetmore. "Coach Bockman's men and women had an excellent weekend. Great relay, very nice relay in this conference. To be third I think is one of our highest finishes ever."

Prior to the 4x4, Eduardo Herrera and John Dressel finished up action in the men's 5,000. The two navigated a field of 38 athletes to finish fourth and sixth as Herrera ran 13:36.19 and Dressel ran 13:40.36. Herrera led for nearly seven laps before being overcome in the final lap while Dressel finishes out his final conference meet as the men's top point-scorer with 11 after finishing as the runner-up in the 10,000 Friday evening.

"Lalo in the 5k was up against some of the best guys in the country," said Wetmore. "Distances, particularly the men's distances in the Pac-12 this year are the best I've ever seen them. It's the best conference in the country. He did good work getting fourth, but John Dressel was not far behind and was our high points scorer. He scored in the 10k and he scored in the 5k so final year, final Pac-12, excellent for John."

The Buffs will take this week and await the final results of conferences around the country. The top-48 athletes accepted from the West will move on to the NCAA West Preliminaries that are held at Texas A&M the final weekend of May. At the conclusion of the Pac-12 Championships Colorado has 28 marks between the men and women that are ranked in the top-50 in the West.
