Thought I'd start this thread now that we can use to post any general (spans more than one CU sport) academic news throughout this academic year (through the summer 2023 semester).

1st off- Some December Buff student-athlete graduates were announced.

Congrats and best wishes to all!

I have so much respect for a person who competes in D1 athletics and graduates in four or five years from a school with CU's academics. Really tremendous accomplishment. I'd hire that person in a heartbeat and figure out their role later.

I tried to hire a guy that had been a D1 BBall player and then coached at MSU. He took another job offer that came at that same time. I bet you that guy crushed it.

Jaylyn Sherrod of the WBB team graduated in 3 years with a bachelor's degree and will graduate again in May with a master's degree.

She hates snow so I would guess she will return to the south after graduation--unless she is going for a PhD.

Naghede Abu of the volleyball team graduated in 4 years with a bachelors degree, an MBA and a Masters's in Taxation. She said for her, volleyball was a means to an end. She knew she couldn't afford to attend college without all kinds of student loans. She was good at volleyball and used the sport to get a college education. She had no desire to play professionally.

This is the epitome of a student athlete and why maintaining opportunities in non-revenue sports is so important, especially for under represented socio-economic groups. The high academic achievers have paths outside of athletics, but for others athletics is the only path to higher education.

Had interned for a Big 4 accounting firm and is now employed by the same firm and has had several promotions.

Congrats to volleyball's Savannah Perry for winning a NICE campuswide honor!

"
BOULDER — The Center for Leadership announced today that Savannah Perry has been named a Student Leader of the Year, making her the first volleyball player to receive the award.

Perry, a defensive specialist from Ames, Iowa, is one of eight recipients selected for the prestigious award. To be eligible, nominees must highlight how they have made an impact on leadership education at CU Boulder.

Before graduating with an Integrative Physiology degree in December, Perry was the president of the Scripps Leadership and Career Development Program. The program focuses on providing student-athletes with career development opportunities and resources. Perry also played a leadership role on campus by being involved in the Presidents Leadership Class.

In addition to being the first volleyball player to be granted the award, Perry is only the fourth student-athlete in CU's history to earn the nomination following the selections of Paxton Smith, Alisha Lau, and Joska Gustav.

"I am honored to receive this award. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to work with and learn from the athletic department and university administration," Perry said. "Through my time as co-president of SAAC, a member of President Leadership Class, and a student athlete on the volleyball team, I have learned how to best lead by example, advocate for myself and my fellow student-athletes, and serve those around me. I am excited to take these leadership skills with me as I attend medical school."

The defensive specialist achieved 224 digs and 12 aces throughout her career, earning a season-high 133 digs and 12 aces this past fall.

Perry and the other recipients will be a part of the Center for Leadership's panel on February 6th (CASE 3:30-5 p.m.) and will be recognized at Macky Auditorium on February 27th (7:30 p.m.) ahead of the Leo Hill Speaker.

CU Honors Its Academic Best At 31st Annual Recognition Ceremony

BOULDER—Around 160 University of Colorado student-athletes, including 45 with a perfect 4.0 grade point average, were honored for academic excellence Monday at the 31st Annual Student-Athlete Recognition Ceremony in the Touchdown Club in the Dal Ward Athletic Center.

More than 250 people attended the event, including university faculty, staff, coaches and student-athletes. A full replay of the event can be watched here.

The Clancy A. Herbst Jr. Student-Athlete Achievement Awards were presented to Justin Jackson (football, Sociology) and Charlotte Whittaker (women's basketball, Sociology). The award is given annually to athletes who overcome personal, academic or emotional challenges to succeed both academically and athletically.

Jackson transferred to CU in the Spring of 2020 just before the pandemic hit. He not only endured the loss of the coaching staff that recruited him, he then had to transition to on-line learning during the pandemic and make up classes that didn't transfer to CU. Then injuries sidelined him most of the 2020 season, but he came back by the end of the season and was named a captain for the Arizona game in 2020 and played in the Alamo Bowl. In the past two seasons he played in 22 games and was named a member of the Victory Club for the team's win over California last season.

Just before coming to CU, Whittaker lost her father Mark to a heart attack just as scholarship offers were starting to come to play in the United States. From New Zealand, Whittaker then had to endure the pandemic and being away from her mom and two younger siblings. Shortly after the 2021 Women's NIT run, she found out she had a genetic disorder that required five hip surgeries and missed the 2021-22 season. She returned to the court this past season after 18 months between games and helped the Buffs reach the Sweet 16.

Four student-athletes were presented with the Morgan Family Buff Club Scholar-Athlete Award, given to the sophomore, junior and male and female seniors with the highest cumulative GPA. The winners, awarded by academic year, are:
  • Hunter Appleton, Sr., Cross Country and Track & Field (3.959 GPA, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology)
  • Alisa Meraz-Fishbein, Sr., Cross Country and Track & Field (3.986 GPA, Journalism, minors in Business and Creative Writing)
  • Frida Formann, Jr., Women's Basketball (4.0 GPA, Environmental Studies)
  • Karina Andersen, Soph., Cross Country and Track & Field (3.956 PGA, Mechanical Engineering)

Academic team winners for highest grade point average were volleyball for fall sports (3.521 GPA) and women's skiing for the winter and spring sports (3.506 GPA). The women's basketball team was honored for the most improved team award, improving from a 3.148 to a 3.276 between the fall 2021 and fall 2022 semesters.

Of CU's 369 student-athletes, 234 are currently maintaining above a 3.0 grade point average, with 107 maintaining above a 3.5. In the fall 2022 semester, 241 achieved a 3.0 GPA with 122 earning a 3.5 GPA and 26 had a perfect 4.0 semester. CU's student-athletes have achieved a cumulative 3.0 GPA for six straight semesters and as a group, they have a 3.143 cumulative GPA.

In the 2022 calendar year, the Spring 2022 and Fall 2022 semesters, a total of 45 student-athletes racked up 52 perfect 4.0 semesters. Jaylyn Sherrod, a senior on the women's basketball team earning a Master's in Organization Leadership, who over the weekend announced she was returning for her fifth season, spoke on behalf of the senior class. She talked about the power of not fearing failure.

"In everything we do, failure is inevitable," Sherrod said. "Failure is the lessons you learn and the way you experience what not to do. It gives you insight in how to try differently next time that could lead you to success. Next time an important decision takes place in your life, don't think about not going for it because you think you could fail. The great thing about it is that it's not how you start, it's how you finish. In closing, keep pushing through and when you fall, dust yourself off and try again. Failure is not what defines you it's how you respond to it."

BOULDER – The University of Colorado Academic Progress Rate (APR) report based on information for the four-year period from 2018-19 through 2021-22 released Tuesday by the NCAA has CU scoring an impressive 991 APR for the 2021-22 season, the highest rate for the Colorado Buffaloes in the history of the APR.

CU also set a program best with 11 of 15 sports (73.3 percent) earning a perfect score of 1,000 for the 2021-22 season. The previous high was 10 sports in both 2016-17 and 2018-19 and it marks the eighth-straight year the Buffs have had more than half (eight or more) teams with a perfect score of 1,000.

CU's four-year API stands at 986, tied for the second-best multiyear APR for the Buffaloes, just one point behind the high mark of 987 in 2015-16. Additionally, four of CU's 15 sports have a perfect score of 1,000 for the four-year period, the fourth-straight year at least four teams have a perfect multiyear APR.

With it being graduation day and all, this thread may be busy the next day or 2.

Congrats and best wishes to all the grads!!!

The student-athlete graduates by sport (Due to the number of tweets, assume I'll need to use at least 3 posts to post all of the tweets.)-

Article is now also out listing all the graduating Buffs - https://cubuffs.com/news/2023/5/11/general-colorado-athletics-spring-2023-graduates.aspx

(Obviously the Covid era has been horrible (the worst large-scale event in my 35++++ years on the planet), with millions of deaths and at minimum, some inconvenience for I assume almost everyone in the world. Still (and so), it's good to see some have been able to make "some lemonade out of lemons". Namely, I'm assuming/ guessing at least some of the 14 student-athletes (hopefully with at least some scholarship money provided) listed as having attained masters degrees, along with one who's graduated law school, did so partly because of the extra year granted to most athletes by the NCAA due to the Covid-19 epidemic.)

Congrats to the one women's golfer and lacrosse player, as well as the 8 skier and 9 track and field Buffs for the Academic All-District honors!

BOULDER – The University of Colorado put together a fantastic semester in the classroom with CU's 369 student-athletes from 17 varsity sports recording a 3.154 grade point average for the spring 2023 semester, the highest term GPA ever recorded, and that effort raised the cumulative GPA to 3.182, also the highest on record.

The Buffs recorded their seventh straight semester with over a 3.0 grade point average and 13 of 15 teams (indoor and outdoor track count as one) posted semester GPAs over 3.0 with nine programs earning 3.3 or higher GPA for the spring. Additionally, 13 of 15 teams have a cumulative GPA over 3.0 and 10 teams have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.

"I'm so proud of what our student-athletes continue to accomplish in the classroom," CU Athletic Director Rick George said. "Success academically is a staple of our Crawford Family Whole Student-Athlete program and our vision to create a world-class experience for our student-athletes. What our student-athletes accomplish while at CU both on and off the field will impact them long after they leave, and their success in the classroom will contribute to success later in life."

CU's football team posted its best term GPA on record with a 2.932, the first time over a 2.9 on record and third time over a 2.8 GPA, all in the last five semesters.

"Our goal is to cultivate professionals, whether it's on the field, in the business world or in our communities," Football Coach Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders said. "A winner wins on the field, off the field and in the community but it all starts in the classroom."

Along with football, both the women's ski (3.667) and women's basketball (3.356) teams achieved the best spring term GPA on record for each program. Women's basketball also posted the best fall GPA in its history.

"When we came to the University of Colorado, it was our goal to create an environment where our student athletes are excelling in every area of their lives," Women's Basketball Coach JR Payne said. "Beyond the individual and collective success on the court, I am equally proud of our team's success in the classroom! I'm very thankful for the support our student-athletes receive from the Herbst Academic Center which is second to none. It makes for a great system where our students can achieve anything that want to in the classroom."

The women's ski team's GPA is the highest for any team in the spring in CU history and is the second-highest term GPA on the books behind its own 3.703 GPA from fall of 2015. It marks the 44th straight semester the women's skiers have achieved over a 3.0 GPA and 23rd straight over a 3.3 GPA.

Men's skiing was just behind with a 3.482 GPA, the 26th straight over a 3.0 and 10th in a row over a 3.2 GPA. Women's golf (3.456) hit the 3.0 mark for the 26th straight semester and 11th in a row over a 3.2, and the women's lacrosse program (3.431) was over a 3.0 for the 18th straight semester including 12 in a row over 3.2. The women's cross country (3.358) and track & field (3.320) both continue to achieve at a high rate with their 38th and 29th straight semester, respectively, over a 3.0 GPA.

"This is a testament as to how hard and smart the student-athletes and the Herbst Academic Center staff worked this spring," Executive Senior Associate Athelic Director for Student Success Kris Livingston said. "We set high academic expectations and goals, and the student-athletes accepted the challenge. Our coaches helped by encouraging their students and supporting our staff. It's always a group effort. I'm proud of our students and appreciative of our staff."

The academic staff started charting these numbers in the spring of 1996 and spring 2020 numbers are not included because of pass/fail options and late withdraw options due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
