As with the other more "individual" sports, thought I'd set up this thread to report on notable results for the indoor track and field men's and women's teams throughout the regular season, as the 1st meet (or possibly meets?***) are scheduled for this weekend, and cubuffs.com has released its preview. The thread will also be used for any other general news that pops up during the season regarding the teams and any of their individuals.
(I will set up a separate thread for the NCAA Championships (scheduled for 3/10-11/2022 in College Station, TX). Typically, I have also had a separate thread for conference (in this sport MPSF) championships, but after not taking place last season (which I assumed to be due to the pandemic), it looks like there's also no MPSF's scheduled this season.)

Full Schedule:
(Note- as I often like to point out, my recollection is that track and field is much more likely to add or subtract meets from their schedule than other sports, even after the season begins.)

Edit - Mainly copying from prior years' threads, an explanation of how qualifying for the NCAA Championships works for the indoor track and field season:

Unlike outdoors, there are no regional championships run to choose who advances to the NCAA Indoor Championships. It's merely-
  • In individual events, it's just the athletes who earn the top 16 times or marks during the qualifying period who accept the invitation to go to the championships for that event.
  • For relays, it's the teams with the top 12 times who accept a bid.
  • Note that there are adjustments made for (1) altitude and (2) facility rating. (An Altitude conversion app and facility conversion factor document can be found in the next link below.)
  • Full explanation of qualifying is at http://www.ustfccca.org/meets-results/ncaa-championship-qualifying-criteria#d1ITF .
To keep up with how individual Buffs are placed to qualify, I believe the official resource for times are-
(For awhile, the last full season's (2011/22) results are probably more indicative of potential qualifying marks. Links to last season's results are:

BOULDER — The University of Colorado track and field program will kick off the 2022-23 indoor season this weekend with meets at the Air Force Academy Friday and Boston College on Saturday.

The combined events athletes and throwers will head to Colorado Springs Friday while CU will send three distance athletes to the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener at Boston University this Saturday.

The combined event athletes will focus on the 60 meter events, running both in the sprints and the hurdles. The team will also compete in the long jump and high jump while the throwers will compete in the shot put and weight throw.

The men will have four men compete in the 60 meter dash and the long jump. Nick Bianco is competing alongside transfer Troy Colleran in the 60 and 60 hurdles as well as the long jump, while Noah Bouchard will compete in the high jump and hurdles. Sophomore Aidan Christiansen has the best entered mark from the Buffs in both the 60 and the long jump and will be competing in each.

The throws are led by Tyler Sconce in the weight with Lars Atkinson throwing both along with Isaiah Bouchard

For the women, returning All-American Avery McMullen will lead six women in the hurdles and 60-meter dash. She will also be joined by Allie Routledge and freshman Riley Burkey in the high jump while Jada Green will lead Kara Lucyk and freshman Eva Bruce in the long jump.

In the throws, the Whyrick sisters will compete with Obi Osafo-Mensah and Gya'ni Sami in the shot put while Bella Braun and Jane Powers will join Sami and Osafo-Mensah in the weight throw.

On Saturday, three Buffs will return to the track on the distance side. India Johnson competes for the first time in her final year of eligibility, running the 5,000 alongside cross country All-American Ella Baran. Charlie Sweeney will also seek a fast time in the 5,000 for the men.

Nice start to the season with a shattered school record and 5 individual event wins.

"
USAFA — Colorado track and field senior Gya'ni Sami kicked off the 2022-23 indoor season on the highest of notes, destroying the Colorado school record in the women's weight throw by nearly a foot and a half.

Sami won the women's weight throw at the Air Force Holiday Open here Friday with a toss of 19.56 meters (64-2.25). The mark was a two-and-a-half foot personal best, with Sami's previous best at 61-8.25. She shattered the CU record set by Cortney Hutmacher back in 2006 of 62-8.5, beating it by more than a foot.

The CU women picked up three total wins in the first day of the season with Avery McMullen winning the 60-meter hurdles in 8.49 seconds while Allie Routledge won the women's high jump with a mark of 1.76 meters (5-9.25). McMullen has an exceptional day, picking up the second-place finish in the open 60 meter dash at 7.65 and placing second in the high jump in 1.65 meters (5-5). Routledge's mark ties her for ninth in CU history in the high jump.

Also for the CU women, Kara Lucyk finished third in the long jump in 5.86 meters (19-2.75). Her mark is good for 10th in CU history.

On the men's side, Noah Bouchard and Tyler Sconce opened the season with individual wins. Bouchard cleared 2.08 meters (6-9.75) in the high jump to take the victory. Sconce won the men's weight throw with a toss of 18.99 meters (62-3.75).

The distance squad competes tomorrow with Charlie Sweeney, India Johnson and Ella Baran competing in the 5,000-meter dash in Boston.

(From that, the 5000M races that the 3 Buffs are racing in are last on the schedule, with the 1st beginning at earliest 3:05 PM MT. Although, a separate final schedule (https://goterriers.com/documents/2022/11/29/BU_Season_Opener_Final_Schedule.pdf) has the women actually beginning at 2:30 PM MT. Not sure which is right.)

Edit - Wanted to mention that, in addition to the 2 current women Buffs racing in heat 2, #ForeverBuffs Emma Coburn and Dani Jones are listed as being in heat 1 of the 5000M. (At least in letsrun.com, it's being assumed one or both may be pacing the race rather than running to win it or earn a top time.)

Nice day for the distance runners yesterday, led by transfer (from D3 Johns Hopkins) Ella Baran, in her 1st race on the track as a Buff (she already earned All-American on the trails with a 30th place finish in the recent Cross Country Championships), runs the 4th fastest time ever for a Buff woman in the indoors 5000M, while also almost certainly running a qualifying time for March's NCAA Indoor Championships. (Her accomplishment was a little more impressive to me in that she won her heat (#2) while also running faster than many of those in heat #1. In most cases, the running wisdom would be she could have easily run a faster time if she had been in that faster heat #1.)

Also a nice near personal record race for India Johnson in what was also her 1st official race in many many months (she didn't compete in cross country).

BOSTON — The University of Colorado track and field graduate student Ella Baran joined the history books here Saturday evening with a top-five time in CU history in the women's 5,000.

Baran finished ninth in a stacked women's 5,000-meter run at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener at Boston University, running 15:33.72 seconds. The mark puts her fourth in CU history while becoming the 10th woman in CU history to run under the 16-minute mark indoors.

India Johnson, who is now ninth in CU history in the event, ran 15:52.90 for 29th. Her mark was just a couple of seconds off her personal best of 15:50.10.

Also for Colorado, Charlie Sweeney ran the men's race in 13:45.68 to finish 49th.

The Buffs close out the calendar year next weekend competing at UC-Colorado Springs in the jumps, throws and combined events.

As I've mentioned in other threads for other sports, I'm possibly going to be without internet access for over a week. Before losing that access, did want to provide some links and information for this weekend's meet at UC- Colorado Springs, the last meet scheduled for the 2022 calendar year. (The next meet scheduled after this weekend's is the Buff's own Potts Invitational, slotted for January 13th-14th.)

Host (UCCS) Meet info document - https://gomountainlions.com/documen...day_Invite_Information__Updated_11.28.22_.pdf

From that document, although they forgot to include the days in their schedule header, and details of schedules often get tweaked a day or two before meets, the current preliminary schedule appears to show the following general timeline (All times Mountain):
Friday, 12/9 - Men's heptathlon begins its 1st event (60M dash) at 11:30 AM. 1st women's pentathlon event (60M hurdles) is scheduled for a noon start. 1st field events begin at 3:00 PM, and the 1st track race at 4:00 PM. (The schedule for that day looks like it should end by 7:00 PM or so.)
Saturday, 12/10 - Men's heptathlon begins its 2nd day at 10:00 AM with 60M hurdles races. Field events start at 11:00 AM and track races begin at 12:30 PM. (The schedule for that day looks like it should end by 3:30 PM or so.)

This Friday and Saturday is one of only 3-4 chances this year to see the Buffs T & F teams live and competing in Boulder.

The majority of the sprints squad will focus on the 200 and the 4x400-meter dash with only Jaida Drame and Grace Jenkins serving as representatives from last year's NCAA Championship relay squads in the open race.

Many of the mulit-eventers, sprinters and field event student-athletes are heading down to the Air Force Academy for a meet being held from tomorrow-Saturday. (Still not too much serious action for most of the distance runners; I would GUESS they may start officially racing at the next and last home meet on January 27th.)

Note - For anyone interested and in the Colorado Springs area, sounds like admission is free for all 3 days.

Not related to current Buffs, but it looks like all 3 distance runners who have committed to be freshmen Buffs (that I know about) next academic year look (???) be racing in the Under 20 races at this year's U.S. (USATF) Cross Country Championships, being competed this Saturday in Richmond, Virginia (at Pole Green Park).

???- I can see all 3 listed in the "Status of Entries" (accessible through https://www.usatf.org/events/2023/2023-usatf-cross-country-championships/open-u20-status-of-entries), but unlike in the U.S. Track and Field Championships Statuses I'm used to reviewing, there is no note whether individuals have or haven't been selected. However, I did find this article (https://www.milesplit.com/articles/326727/here-are-the-hs-athletes-entered-for-usatf-u20-xc-champs ) which makes it sound to me like all 3 ARE selected and plan to race on Saturday.

the 6K U20 women's race is scheduled to begin at 10:30 AM MT, and may include future Buffs Karrie Baloga (listed as Karrilynn Baloga in the start list) and Abbey Nechanicky.

Then, the 8K U20 men's race is scheduled to begin at 11:15 AM MT, with future Buff Kole Mathison looking to be competing.

((Note - Don't know if there's a reason they didn't mention it, but a couple other Buffs did qualify for tomorrow women's 60M hurdle finals with McMullen and Green finishing with the 2nd and 5th fastest times in the prelims.)

Action in the field events has begun as the Air Force meet begins its last day, with the track action starting up in around 40 minutes.

I read something in a letsrun.com thread, so take it for what it's worth, that the top 6 finishers in each of these U.S. Championships cross country races potentially qualify for the World Cross Country Championships, scheduled to be run February 18, 2023 in Bathurst, Australia. (Location and date from the USATF webpage - https://www.usatf.org/events/2023/2023-usatf-cross-country-championships .)

If so, it looks like both of the incoming female Buffs, Nechanicky and Baloga, have qualified for Worlds', as they finished 4th and 5th per the live results in the Under 20 women's race. Unless another of the top 6 finishers choose not to go to Australia, looks like Mathison is JUST missing out on the Worlds', as he finished 7th in the U20 men's race. All 3 have still earned honors for their races, as the top 10 finishers are awarded Championship medals.

USAFA, Colo. — Colorado track and field pentathlete Avery McMullen completed a three-event finish here Saturday at the Ralph Lindeman Invitational, leading the CU women to a fifth-place in the team scoring.

Preview for Friday's big home meet, which as the last indoor home meet looks to being treated as a Senior Day for the many graduating seniors.

Also looks like, as is tradition, many of the top distance runners are "waking up" from a competitive sleep (although I'm sure they've been training hard) from the NCAA Cross Country Championships in mid-November to race for the 1st time this indoor season at this meet. And, in past years, at least a a few of them have earned times that, after the NCAA altitude conversion, ended up strong enough to qualify them relatively early in the season for the NCAA Indoor Championships.

BOULDER — Colorado track and field star Avery McMullen took down her second school record here Friday, breaking the 21-year old record in the women's 60-meter hurdles in 8.25 seconds.

McMullen, who had a previous best of 8.28, broke former CU Olympian Hannah Cooper's record from 2002 of 8.27 seconds in the finals. McMullen ran 8.35 seconds in the prelims as the fastest qualifying time, then blasted to an easy win for the record.

The pentathlete already owns the school record in that event, adding the hurdle mark to her resume and now seeks the indoor long jump record that she is less than two inches from. Jenny Simpson is the only CU woman with more records indoor with three.

The women had an outstanding day, finishing as the top collegiate athletes in six events. Allie Routledge moved to fifth in CU history in the women's high jump, winning the event in 1.81 meters (5.11.25). She became the first CU woman indoors to clear the 1.80 meter mark since 1997 and now sits 18th in the NCAA in the event.

The women also picked up wins in the long jump with Kara Lucyk jumping 5.79 meters (19-0) and Emma Pollak winning the 200 in 24.05 seconds before helping the women's 4x400 relay win in 3:50.12 seconds.

The last event of the evening, the women's invitational mile, saw Ella Baran finish second to CU Olympian Val Constien. Baran ran 4:45.23 seconds, which coverts down to around 4:38.20 with altitude conversion and puts her 11th in the NCAA in the event. Her altitude converted time would've been seventh in CU history.

Also making marks in the record books was Jada Green who finished runner-up in the hurdles in 8.41 seconds. She moves to sixth in CU history.

The men also won six events today, led by grad transfer James Milholen who opened his CU career in the 400 with a win in 46.76 seconds. The mark instantly moved him to second in CU history behind only James Davis, and it also moved him to 18th in the NCAA.

Heptathlete Troy Colleran, another graduate transfer for the Buffs, picked up wins in both vertical jumps. He won the high jump in 1.96 meters (6-5), defeating his teammates Noah Bouchard and Jackson Meyers on jumps as all three men cleared the height. Colleran backed up that performance with a clearance of 4.70 meters (15-5) in the pole vault to take the win there.

Tyler Sconce was another collegiate winner, finishing runner-up in the weight throw to former teammate Dominique Williams who set a new facility record. Sconce threw 18.93 meters (62-1.25).

The Buffs won both sections of the men's 3000 to close out the night. Grady Rauba took the first section in 8:26.72, then graduate transfer Seth Hirsch won the invitational section in 8:15.41 seconds.

Colorado continues the indoor season next week with trips to Colorado Mines and Washington State.

Preview in front of this weekend's meets, with the top sprinters mainly at Arkansas, while others (mainly distance) are in Seattle. (Personally even more happy now I decided to spring for a new ESPN+ subscription, as it looks like that's going to give me access to watch at least part of the Arkansas meet.)

Saturday switches focuses for both groups with the 800 and miles at the Husky Classic and the 200-meter dash and 4x400 Saturday.

Both squads are looking for NCAA Indoor qualifying marks to join Ella Baran's mark in the 5,000 and Avery McMullen's score in the pentathlon, both of which are top-10 in the NCAA. Baran will join India Johnson as the two go after the 3,000-meter run qualifying, while Johnson is doubling back in the 5,000 joining Kaitlyn Barthell. Whitney Valenti is the only other CU distance woman making the trip and will compete in the mile.

The distance men are competing in the 800, 3,000 and 5,000. Seven men are competing in the 5,000 led by Charlie Sweeney and Seth Hirsch. Arkansas' meet will be live streamed on SEC Network + and will be available to ESPN+ subscribers. The Husky Classic will be available to runnerspace plus members to stream.

SEATTLE/FAYETTEVILLE — The University of Colorado track and field graduate transfer Ella Baran became the second CU woman to run under the nine-minute barrier in the 3,000-meter run here Friday evening.

Baran had an enormous kick, coming from around eighth in the race with less than half a mile to go to finishing third on the heels of the leaders in 8:58.51. Her mark was good enough for top 10 in the NCAA this season before today and should qualify her in the event for the NCAA Championships along with her already top 10 5,000-meter mark.

The achievement moves Baran into second in CU history behind only Jenny Simpson's former NCAA record of 8:42.03.

In the men's 5,000, six CU men ran under 14 minutes led by Charlie Sweeney finishing fifth overall in 13:44.15. Ethan Powell kicked to a heat three victory in 13:51.35, followed by Hunter Appleton in 13:52.39, James Overberg in 13:57.97 and Brendan Fraser in 13:57.82. Seth Hirsch was right behind Sweeney in the final heat and ran under his previous best of 13:47.50, but was disqualified for stepping on the outside of the lane line with two laps to go.

In the women's 5,000, India Johnson finished 15th in 16:08.94 while Kaitlyn Barthell finished 34th in 16:31.74.

In Arkansas, the Buffs ran well in the sprints with three men under 48 seconds in the 400-meter dash while the women had all four under 58 seconds. James Milholen was the highest-finishing Buff with a 12th-place finish at 47.10. Tyler Williams finished 21st in 47.39 and Ian Gilmore finished 29th in 47.74, moving up two spots to seventh in CU history in the event.

The women were led by Abbey Glynn who finished 13th in 53.65 seconds, while Emma Pollak finished 22nd in 54.52 seconds. Grace Jenkins ran 56.10 while Jaida Drame ran 57.15. All four women will run in the 4x400-meter relay tomorrow along with the men's squad.

In the short sprints, Luc Andrada ran 6.89 in the 60-meter dash while Reese Renz ran 8.93 in the 60-meter hurdles.

Action continues in both meets tomorrow with CU in the 200-meter dash and 4x400-meter relays in Arkansas while the middle distance crew competes in the 800 and mile.

SEATTLE/FAYETTEVILLE — The University of Colorado track and field team posted four marks in the CU top-10 performers list here Saturday with three entries on the men's side and one on the women's in the Husky Classic and Tyson Invitational.

The top mark of the day came from the women's 4x400-meter relay of Grace Jenkins, Emma Pollak, Jaida Drame and Abbey Glynn. The quartet that qualified the NCAA Championships last May came together and posted the second-best mark in CU history of 3:36.60, winning their heat by two seconds. Jenkins led off with a 55.72 split, followed by Pollak running 53.44 to claim the lead. Drame ran 55.28 and shortly surrendered the lead at the final exchange, but Glynn closed in 52.18 seconds to bring the women under 3:37.

Tyler Williams, Ian Gilmore, Garrett Nelson and James Milholen ran 3:08.35, good for 27th in the NCAA. Williams ran 47.16 out of the blocks, followed by Gilmore splitting 46.61 and Nelson splitting 48.32. Milholen closed in 46.27 seconds.

The women have a few athletes competing with hopes to extend their seasons to the NCAA Indoor National Championships. Ella Baran is currently ninth in the 5,000 and seems safe, while Avery McMullen is also ninth in the pentathlon and safe. Baran will compete in the mile or 3,000 this weekend, the later of which she is on the bubble at 17th in the NCAA. She needs to run a second or two faster, more than likely 8:55 to be safe. McMullen is competing in the long jump and has a wind-aided jump of 6.32 meters (20-9) from last season. If she jumps that this weekend she could add the long jump to her indoor schedule. She will be joined by Kara Lucyk in the event.

Others with outside chances looking to qualify include India Johnson in the 5,000. She is 32nd in the NCAA right now and needs to run around 15:40 to get in. She will also try the 3,000 along with Kaitlyn Barthell. Allie Routledge is 28th in the high jump and needs a jump of 1.85 (6-0.75) or better to make it to the NCAA Championships. Routledge is also competing in the pentathlon.

The multis kick things off with Nick Bianco and Troy Colleran in the heptathlon with Jada Green, Eva Bruce and Routledge in the pentathlon. Green is coming off a pentathlon and hurdle appearance at the USA Indoor Championships last week and will compete in her third pentathlon in four weeks.

The weight throw starts out the field events. Tyler Sconce and Matt Ward will compete for the men while school record holder Gya'ni Sami will compete for the women. Lauren Whyrick rounds out the throwers competing with an appearance in the shot put.

For the women, the 4x4 squad of Abbey Glynn, Emma Pollak, Grace Jenkins and Jaida Drame will all run in the open 400. They all fill out a different heat with one in heats two through five. They will also run the 4x4 and need to run 3:34 or faster to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
