With men's golf being one of those sports that has MANY tournaments in both the fall and spring semesters, I wanted to set up a thread that as normal we can use to cover anything that comes up on and off the course up until the post-season begins with the Pac 12 Championships (scheduled to begin April 28th, 2023 this upcoming academic year). (I'll give the post-season its own thread(s).)

I'm starting this thread now as I see the team has released both its current year schedule (https://cubuffs.com/sports/mens-golf/schedule/2022-23) and roster (https://cubuffs.com/sports/mens-golf/roster/2022-23?&sort=class). Per the schedule, the 1st tournament is at Notre Dame Sept. 4-5.

BOULDER — University of Colorado men's head golf coach Roy Edwards announced the team's 2022-23 schedule Wednesday, and it once again features many familiar annual tournaments along with a couple of events for the first time in decades.

Edwards is entering his 17th season at the reins of the Buffalo program, with this team having as much if not more potential as he's had during his tenure. Despite being young – one senior, six sophomores and two freshmen – the sophomores are all experienced and the two frosh include the state of Colorado's top prep performer. Leading the way is sophomore Justin Biwer, who set 19 school records as a true freshman last season.

The season gets underway on Sept. 4-5 in the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Classic, the fourth time the Buffaloes are entered in the prestigious meet; CU finished ninth out of 14 teams last October in the event, with true frosh Dylan McDermott finishing third with a 7-under 203 score.

"We are playing one of the best schedules in the country once again this year, and as always on some of the top courses," Edwards said. "We typically start the season at Air Force, but with Notre Dame moving earlier we will be starting in South Bend this fall, which always features one of the best fields in the nation. We really like the sequencing as we round out the fall on Maui in the Kaanapali Intercollegiate.

Justin Biwer is now 2 up with 2 to play.

With his match being the last in the round of 32, it's getting full-time coverage right now.

GREAT start to the academic year for sophomore Dylan McDermott as he earn's medalist honors in the 1st tournament for the Buffs, and the team overall finishes solidly in 5th (out of 15 teams)!

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The University of Colorado men's golf team recorded a solid performance here Monday in its 2022-23 season with a fifth place finish in the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Invitational, but the story of the day for the Buffaloes was an individual win with a record-setting performance by sophomore Dylan McDermott.

Florida let from wire-to-wire in winning with a 21-under par 819 score, holding off a charge from Georgia Southern, which was 12-under par for the final round to jump into second with an 820 total. North Carolina slipped into third (821), with host Notre Dame fourth (821). The Buffaloes nabbed fifth with a third straight subpar round of their own, finishing with a 7-under 833 score.

McDermott, who hails from Granite Bay, Calif., turned in a 10-under par, 69-66-65—200 scorecard over the three rounds here on the 7,023-yard, par-70 Warren Golf Course layout, setting a CU record for the lowest gross score, whether it was a par-70, par-71 or par-72 configuration. In doing so, he took over the top spot in the tournament when he birdied Nos. 15 and 17 coming into the club house.

McDermott was caught late by North Carolina's David Ford, who had two birdies and an eagle in his final five holes to finish with a 6-under 64 to force a playoff for the trophy; both get credit for a win. Both players scored par on No. 1, the first playoff hole (372-yard, par-4), and then moved to No. 6 (473-yard, par-4), where both players landed in a green-side bunker and went on to bogey; Ford missed a 10-foot putt for the win. The duo then played No. 1 again, where both made par from about 15 feet to go back to No. 6; McDermott two-putted from about 15 feet while Ford made bogey.

"Dylan was obviously really good from start to finish," said CU head coach Roy Edwards. "He took a big step forward and did an incredible job in the playoff. Both players had chances to win and he just kept in it. He hit a great approach into the fourth playoff hole and all he needed was two putts for the win.

"The impressive thing about the playoff is that he was very steady emotionally and recognized that he had a lot of adrenalin going," Edwards continued. "Normally someone might not realize that, and his heart might have been beating quickly, but he was in the zone emotionally and that allowed him to trust his abilities."

McDermott is the first Buff to win a major tournament since Daniel O'Loughlin won CU's Mark Simpson Invitational in 2019; it's also the first by a CU duffer in an out-of-state tourney since Yannik Paul claimed honors in the 2018 Arizona State Sun Devil Thunderbird Invitational (he shot an 11-under 202 in that event, now the third-lowest gross score at CU).
...

"This was a really good way to start the season, and was very proud of the team and our competitiveness," said Edwards. "We saw a lot of good golf across the board. Justin was his usual steady self, and Hunter and Tucker had nice debuts as Buffaloes. Jack had a nice day today and that should be a springboard for him to the season."

Colorado returns to action later this week in the Air Force Miranda Invitational in Colorado Springs, which takes place Saturday through Monday at AFA's Eisenhower Blue Golf Course, which is right next to Falcon Stadium. With the football team playing at Air Force at 1:30, fans are welcome to watch the golf as CU will tee off in the morning.

NOTES: In the most recent WAGR (World Amateur Golf Rankings) of August 31, McDermott came in ranked 1,059th and bested three in the top 20: North Carolina's Dylan Menante (ranked 7th) and Ford (16th) and Florida's Ricky Castillo (19th) along with several others, including teammate Biwer (515th). The previous record for the low gross score in CU annals was a 9-under 201 (64-67-70), set by Beau Schoolcraft in the 2011 Wyoming Cowboy Classic at Scottsdale … Colorado was the only team in the field competing without a single upperclassman (four sophomores and a true freshman) … They responded by being the first team in CU history to score three subpar round in a 54-hole tournament that took place on a par-70 course … The average score for all 252 rounds 71.37 (the final round had the high of 71.87) … The Buffs played the par-3s at 7-over (tied for seventh in the field), the par-4s at 10-over (fifth) and the par-5's at 9-under (eighth) … CU had the fourth-most birdies (51; Florida led with 57) and the seventh-most pars (171; Kansas had the high with 183).

Looks like the team had a solid round yesterday at the tournament at the Air Force Acadamy course, and were in 2nd place. (They've slipped to a tie for 4th as I type this in round 2, but have reported more holes than most teams, so may move up the board some as others' rounds start reporting.)

COLORADO SPRINGS — The University of Colorado men's golf team, fresh off a solid performance four days earlier at Notre Dame, opened up Friday in a second place tie at Air Force's Gene Miranda Invitational.

The Buffaloes shot a 1-under 287, their fourth straight subpar round, and trail in-state rival Colorado State by four shots (the Rams are in at 5-under 283). Cal State-Northridge and Utah State matched CU's score, with rivals New Mexico State and Texas-El Paso tied for fifth with 290 totals.

Sophomore Dylan McDermott once again led CU, as he recorded a 3-under 69 on the 7,541-yard, par-72 Eisenhower Blue Golf Course configuration. It was his fourth straight subpar round to open the 2022-23 season, the most in a row by a Buff since Daniel O'Loughlin had four in the fall of 2019. He did so Friday with four birdies and 13 pars on the 7,541-yard, par-72 Eisenhower Blue Golf Course and is tied for sixth in the massive 120-player field.
...

"Very encouraged by the day. We really didn't have our 'A' games but everyone hung in there and stayed in the mix, said CU head coach Roy Edwards. "The conditions were fairly tough and the guys had to adjust on the fly. They did a great job competing and staying patient."

Meanwhile in the Miranda Individual Invitational, sophomore Jack Hughes, the defending champion, maintained his love affair with the 6,510-yard, par-72 Eisenhower Silver Course. In winning in 2021, he had three eagles over the three days; he had two more on Friday in carding a 4-under 68 to be in a tie for second (he led CU in eagles last year with six). He also had four birdies, eight pars and four bogeys and is one off the lead.
...

"Jack Hughes was 4-over through four holes in the individual tournament and rallied to shoot 4-under," Edwards proudly noted. "Really nice playing and staying determined. It was also a solid debut by Robby as well. Jack (Holland) and Freddy didn't play their best, but I expect them to play more to their capabilities the next few rounds."

The second round in both events is set for Saturday. In the main tournament, Colorado will tee off between 8:30 and 9:10 off the No. 1 tee and will be paired with San Jose State, Cal Poly and Northern Iowa. (CU's football team is playing at Air Force at 1:30, fans are welcome to watch the golf before tailgating, as the course is right next to Falcon Stadium). The forecast calls for intermittent rain throughout the day with temperatures in the 50s; it could make for a challenging day as patience might be the key as rounds took right around six hours to complete on Friday.

The individuals will have a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. off nine different holes (1 and 11 through 18).

NOTES: The school record for the most consecutive rounds in the 60s are seven, done twice (by the Paul brothers, Jeremy in 2016 and Yannik in 2018); four ties the mark for third, previously done by Philip Juel-Berg, Ross Macdonald and O'Loughlin … The average score for all 120 rounds on Friday was 74.92; CU's average was an even par 72.0, just behind CSU (71.8), with all five Buffaloes in the top 34. Next best was UTEP, with its quintet all in the top 55 … The Buffs played the par-3s even (best in the field), the par-4s at 6-over (fifth) and the par-5's at 6-under (tied for third; McDermott played them at 3-under, also third-best in the event … CU tied for the fifth-most birdies (16; Utah State is tops with 21) and the second-most pars (60; Weber State has 61).

Per the leaderboard, nice rally by the Buffs moved them up from 4th to 2nd place at the Air Force hosted tourney that is just ending. (Their 4 scorers were at a combined +2 through 11 or so holes, and then went -6 for the last 7 holes to finish the day at -4, and -5 for the tourney.)

Way to go Buffs!

(Of course, like ALL sports, it's probably always a fool's errand to try and extrapolate a team's prospects based on one competition, especially this early, but if this tourney means anything about the future, looks like our neighbor to the northeast, CSU, might be in for a good (academic) year, as they dominated this tourney, finishing 25 strokes ahead of the 2nd place Buffs. That differential was larger than the 22 strokes the Buffs had over the two schools that tied for 14th place.)

ALBUQUERQUE — The University of Colorado men's golf team had the same basic result here Saturday in the third and final round of New Mexico's William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, that being a strong start but finishing with struggles down the stretch as the Buffaloes finished ninth.

San Diego State held off host New Mexico to win the team title, as the Aztecs won with a 16-under 848 total; the Lobos were eight back at 856. UNLV finished third (858), TCU fourth (860) and Brigham Young fifth (861, as the Cougars shot the best round of the day, an 8-under 280, one of just three subpar scores in the final round).

Colorado appeared to be on its way to scoring a round under par, at one point being 6-under early in the round. But as was the case the first two rounds, the Buffs lost nine strokes to par over the last five holes and wound up closing with a 6-over 294, for an overall score of 16-over 880.

Sophomores Justin Biwer and Dylan McDermott led the Buffaloes here, as both tied for 10th individually with 3-under par 213 scores; McDermott had CU's low round of the day, a 2-under 70 on the 7,546-yard, par-72 UNM Championship Golf Course layout, while Biwer recorded a 1-over 73.
...

"Justin and Dylan had nice events, ," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "The rest of us weren't at our best, just kind of labored to get much going. It's a great opportunity for us to get better over the next week and be ready for the Simpson."

The Buffaloes will return to action in nine days, as they will host the 12th Annual Mark Simpson-Colorado Invitational at Boulder Country Club, October 3-4.

NOTES: The average score for all 312 rounds over the two days was 74.18, with a 74.49 average for the final round … The Buffs played the par-3s at 16-over (tied for ninth-best in the field), the par-4s at 35-over (tied for eighth) and the par-5's at just 16-under (11th) … CU tied for the ninth-most birdies after scoring 18 Saturday (44 total; New Mexico topped all with 58) and the eighth-most pars (155; San Francisco led with 169) ... CU posted a 10-8 record in the meet, improving its record against Division I opponents to 42-13 for the season … Biwer has now been under par in 11 of 14 career tournaments, while McDermott has been in the red in seven of 13.

BOULDER — The University of Colorado men's golf team captured second place here Tuesday in its own 12th Annual Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational, as the teams completed the weather-shortened second round ahead of the third and final round.

Wyoming, which has appeared in all 12 of the events, broke through for its first win, as the Cowboys recorded one of two subpar rounds in the final 18 to move up from third in the standings. The 1-under 279 gave UW a 2-under 838 score for the meet, besting Colorado (839, -1) by one shot. Rice, which led after two rounds, finished with a 3-over 843, with Arkansas State (845) and Utah Valley (846) rounding out the top five.

The Cowboys finished second in 2016, one stroke behind the Buffs, and thus returned the favor this year. Those are the only two times the winning team claimed victory by a single stroke, though on three occasions two schools tied for top honors.
...

"The team fought hard but just came up a little short against a really good team in Wyoming," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "Dylan and Justin had really good tournaments, despite not playing their best. They did a great job. Tucker had a nice tournament as well. A few other guys playing as individuals had nice final rounds.

"Overall, we weren't good enough with our short irons and short game and our consistency as we had way too many high rounds," he added. "We have a huge opportunity to get better right away working hard on our short game and wedges. There is a lot to be excited about."

Utah Valley's Brady McKinley took over the individual lead midway through the second round and held on for the win, turning in a 7-under 203 scorecard. That edged Rice's Raghav Chugh by a stroke and CU's Biwer by three shots.

The Buffaloes return to action next Monday, traveling due west to participate in the University of Nevada's Wolfpack Classic, October 10-11 at Hidden Valley Country Club.

The team has been competing at the "Wyoming World Match Play Championship" in Palm Desert the last couple days, and made it to the final, where it looks like they lost a TIGHT one to the USD Torreros, 3-2-1. PALM DESERT, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team opened its spring season in solid fashion here Friday, winning a pair of matches to advance to the finals in Wyoming's World Match Play Championship.

"It was a really nice way to open the spring today," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "We got off to a bit of a slow start against South Dakota State. The guys really competed well and pulled away on the back nine."

The Buffaloes, who entered the spring ranked No. 46 in the nation by GolfStat and the No. 1 seed in this event, defeated South Dakota State, 4½-1½, in the morning quarterfinal round to advance to play host Wyoming in the afternoon semifinal. The Cowboys defeated Seattle University, 5-1.
...

McDermott had a much easier time in the afternoon semis, but the Buffaloes found themselves in a dogfight with their neighbors of the north, defeating Wyoming, 4-2. McDermott defeated Kirby Coe-Kirkham, 5 and 4; though down one through six, he won six of the next eight holes to be the first Buff to finish his semifinal match.
...

The Buffaloes will now face the University of San Diego in the championship final, with play commencing at 8 a.m. MST Saturday. The No. 2 seed Toreros defeated Wichita State and San Francisco to reach the final.

NOTES: Against South Dakota State, CU's sextet won 33 holes, lost 20 and tied 41 … Thus, on the day the Buffs won 61, lost 40 and tied 95.

The team had a nice start to its tourney in Palm Desert, CA yesterday. With the Buffs the only team in the tourney with a number by its name (#47 rated by Golfstats), assume the team expects to finish near or at the top this week to meet its goals. (Looks like they slipped a couple spots early in the 2nd round today, but a long way to go.)

Article after today's round, which saw the Buffs slip a couple spots down the leaderboard, although they're only 3 strokes out of 2nd with one round remaining. (Host Wyoming is leading and is 9 strokes up on CU.)

The Buffs had their best round of the tourney, and move up one spot to finish in 3rd (3 back from 2nd and 6 from 1st). And, congrats to Mr. McDermott for the individual runner-up finish.

PALM DESERT, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team inched up a spot to a third place finish here Friday, as the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate came to a close.

Host Wyoming held off the field in claiming its own tourney, as the Cowboys turned in an even-par 288 score in the final round to win with a 7-under 857 score. Fresno State moved from third to second with the best single round team Friday (4-under 284) to close at 4-under 860.

The Buffaloes, ranked No. 47 – the highest that competed here – were the only other team under par, finishing with a 1-under 863 on the 7,305-yard, par-72 Classic Club Course layout; CU had the second-best final round score of 3-under 285. Utah (868) and Hawaii (872) rounded out the top five.

Sophomore Dylan McDermott led the Buffaloes for the fourth time in seven tournaments, as he claimed runner-up honors with a 5-under 211 score; he finished up with a second straight 3-under 69 after tying for a team-high five birdies Friday. He had 11 parts and two bogeys otherwise as he spent much of the round chasing medalist honors, closing to within one of the lead on several occasions. He was second in both par-3's scoring (3-under) and in par-5 scoring (7-under).
...

"It was a really nice event for Dylan and Justin – they did a good job battling throughout the week despite not having their A games," head coach Roy Edwards said. "Third place in a tournament this early in our spring season is never a bad thing, but certainly would have preferred to win. We had some good moments here and there from the rest of the team, but we need to get more consistent."

The Buffaloes are now idle until the last week of March, when they will play in two tournaments over CU's spring break, the Oregon Duck Invitational (March 26-27) and Stanford's The Goodwin (March 30-April 1).

SAN FRANCISCO — The University of Colorado men's golf team opened in a tie for 15th place here Thursday after the first round of Stanford's "The Goodwin," which was completed here Thursday.

Despite 14 teams in the field in the top 75 (and 18 in the top 100), only three teams of the 28 competing scored rounds under par Thursday. Host and No. 28 Stanford turned in the best score, a 7-under 273, with No. 13 Oklahoma in second (5-under 275) and No. 11 Georgia Tech in third (277). No. 35 Washington and No. 66 San Francisco are tied for fourth, all in with even-par 280s.

Colorado, ranked No. 51, got off to a slow start with just two birdies on the first 13 holes, with 23 bogeys; but the Buffs closed strong, moving up six places over the final five holes into a tie with Southern California for 15th place. The four players who scored for CU finished with an eagle, five birdies and 11 pars with just two bogeys to help the Buffs to a 7-over 287 score for the day.

The Buffaloes did not have a player score worse than a bogey on any hole, joined only in doing so by Georgia Tech, Oregon and San Diego.

SAN FRANCISCO — The University of Colorado men's golf team moved up four spots into 11th place, as the second round of Stanford's "The Goodwin," was completed here Friday.

No. 11 Georgia Tech carded one of the best two single round scores Friday to leapfrog into the lead; after a 10-under 270, the Yellow Jackets own a 36-hole score of 13-under 547. No. 13 Oklahoma remained in second, one back at 548; San Diego turned in the other 270 single round score to move from eighth into third at 6-under 554. First round leader, host and No. 8 Stanford is fourth (556), with No. 66 San Francisco rounding out the top five (558).

Colorado, ranked No. 51, started slow for the second straight round, the five players a combined 8-over through four holes (with the four who would tally the team score at the end of the day 4-over). But the Buffaloes, who had just one birdie and 15 bogeys on the back nine Thursday played those holes much better, with nine birdies and nine bogeys the second time around the course. When the smoke cleared, CU remain tied for 15th place after morning play was completed but moved into 11th with an 8-over 568 total after recording a 1-over 281 for Friday's round which was the 10th-best of the day.

CU is just 10 strokes out of fifth in a 28-team field comprised of 14 top 75 schools and 18 of the top 100.

The third and final round is Saturday, with the Buffaloes paired with BYU, Cal Poly and Washington State and teeing off from 2:05-2:53 p.m. (MST) off the No. 10 tee. They will be the last group that will tee off in the final round.

NOTES: CU was also the last to tee off in the first round … Colorado continued to avoid big numbers for the most part, as the Buffaloes have just three double bogeys worse than bogey; that's the sixth-fewest through two rounds (Georgia Tech has zero, San Diego one, and USC, SMU and San Francisco two apiece). CU played with Cal, SMU and San Diego in both rounds, and the group by far had the fewest holes worse than bogey with nine total … McDermott now has 13 rounds in the 60s this season and 21 for his career (both CU team-bests); the CU single-season mark is 18, set by Jeremy Paul during the 2015-16 campaign … The average score for the 310 rounds through Friday is 72.29; it was nearly a stroke lower for the second round (71.90) than the first (72.68) … Colorado is playing the par-3s at 13-over (tied for 20th in the field), the par-4s at 19-over (13th) and the par-5s at 9under (tied for 10th) … The Buffs still have one of just nine eagles (by McDermott on Thursday), and are tied for 22nd in birdies (21, San Francisco has 40) and the eighth-most pars (115; Cal leads with 134).
