With women's golf being one of those Buff sports that has MANY tournaments in both the fall and spring semesters, I wanted to set up a thread that as normal we can use to cover anything that comes up on and off the course up until the post-season begins with the Pac 12 Championships (scheduled to begin April 17th, 2023 and hosted by ASU this upcoming academic year). (I'll give the post-season its own thread(s).)

I'm starting this thread now as I see the team has released both its current year schedule (Assume it will be kept updated at https://cubuffs.com/sports/womens-golf/schedule/2022-23) and roster (https://cubuffs.com/sports/womens-golf/roster/2022-23?&sort=class). Per the schedule, the 1st tournament is at the venerable Olympic Club Sept. .12th-13th.

BOULDER — University of Colorado women's golf coach Anne Kelly announced the team's 2022-23 schedule, which will feature five fall events and four spring events leading into the Pac-12 Championship.

Three of the five fall tournaments are new to the Buffs as they open the campaign Sept. 12-13 at the Olympic Club Invitational in San Francisco, Calif. The University of San Francisco will host the two-day event.

The team starts its season tomorrow in San Francisco (the Olympic Club) facing off what seems to be a good tough field in a 2 day 54 hole tourney.

It's a relatively young Buff squad competing, with 2 freshmen and 2 sophomores in the 5 player team roster.

BOULDER –There won't be any easing into the season for the University of Colorado women's golf team. The Buffaloes are jumping right in.

"We're jumping in with both feet," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said.

The Buffaloes begin their 29th season of varsity women's golf, without a senior in their opening tournament lineup, Monday, Sept. 12, at the 2022 University of San Francisco Intercollegiate and will do so facing some of the top teams in the country on one of the nation's best courses - The Olympic Club Ocean Course in San Francisco.

The tournament will consist of 54 holes with the first 36 coming on Monday. The Olympic Club Ocean Course will play as a par 71, with a length of 5,976 yards.

The tournament field is relatively small – only 10 teams participating – but it is power packed. UCLA and San Jose State are ranked No. 5 and No. 9 respectively in the Mizuno Women's Golf Coaches Association Preseason Polls and are coming off NCAA Championship appearances. Oregon State, California, BYU and Pepperdine all advanced to NCAA Regional competition last season.

"It will definitely be a challenge," said Kelly who begins her 26th season as Colorado's head coach. "You always want to challenge yourself and to play a course of that quality is just a great opportunity. It's a smaller field, but there are some very good and highly ranked teams there."

Junior Hailey Schalk, Colorado's stroke average leader last season at 74.7, is among the five traveling to San Francisco, but the remaining four will consist of two sophomores and a pair of true freshmen.

Morgan Miller and Makenzie Cooper jump right into the mix and are set to make their collegiate debuts. Cooper, from Litchfield Park, Ariz., won three junior championships this summer, including a 12-stroke win – shooting 9-under – at the Junior Golf Association of Arizona Ping Invitational. Miller a native of Cedar Park, Texas, is a two-time Colorado Junior Match Play champion and placed sixth at the 2022 Colorado Golf Association Women's Stroke Play in Erie this summer.

Miller will be Colorado's No. 1 golfer for this tournament after a seven-stroke win in team qualifying.

"Morgan is a very strong player and hits the ball a long way," Kelly said. "Like every freshman that comes in, she needs a little more course management, but she's played quite well (in qualifying), so you just never know. We're very excited for her."

Sophomores Lauren Gooding and Natalie Vo round out the Buffaloes' lineup. Gooding played in eight events as a redshirt freshman last season and had Colorado's best overall placing in any single tournament tying for third at the Golfweek Red Sky Classic.

Vo saw action in 11 tournaments last year – two as an individual. This summer she took co-medalist honors in the stroke play round of the U.S. Girls' Junior Championship in Bowling Green, Ky.

"We've had a couple very good weeks of practice," Kelly said. "We're going in with a very young squad; not a senior in the lineup. It will be interesting to see how the team performs, but they've been working hard. They seem very dedicated and enthusiastic. Golf is just so hard to predict, so we just have to take it one day and one shot at a time."

Monday's first round begins with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. MT. Four of Colorado's golfers will split into a pair of foursomes with four BYU student-athletes while a fifth will match up with golfers from BYU, Oregon State and Pepperdine. All golfers will begin Tuesday's final round on hole No. 1, with the first group scheduled for 9 a.m. MT.

The Buffs solidified their 2nd place position after their 2nd round (of 3 for this tourney), which featured a great 18th hole (a 510 yd. par 5) where the 5 member team combined to go -7 after 3 birdies and 2 eagles.

WOLCOTT, Colo.Lauren Gooding has found a second home.

Last year, the London native made a splash at Red Sky, shooting 68 in her University of Colorado debut. On Tuesday, she returned the scene, and did it one better.

Gooding shot a career-best 67 in the second round of the Golfweek Red Sky Classic to help the Buffaloes maintain second place after 36 holes at the Red Sky Golf Club on Tuesday.
...

Colorado, which entered Tuesday tied for second with Fresno State, ended the day in sole possession of that spot after shooting even-par to remain at 1-under (575) for the tournament.

Pepperdine holds an 11-shot lead (564) over the Buffaloes after an impressive 9-under second round. Kennesaw State and Fresno State are tied for third at 5-over, 581.

Looks like the women slipped a little to 3rd place as the Wolcott tourney completed. None of the 4 scorers looked to have had bad days, as they all finished either +1 or +2, but unlike the 1st 2 rounds the team didn't have any low stick(s) today. (Conversely, Kennesaw State had the low round of the day to finish 2nd overall, with Pepperdine easily winning wire to wire.)

With a large tourney like this, finishing 3rd is still of course a solid result.

I do NOT have a good memory, but based on scoring (even the individual medalist was at +13), the toughest course I can remember either Buff team (women's or men's) has faced since I've been posting about golf results in Allbuffs.

DUBLIN, Ohio — The University of Colorado placed three golfers in the top 20 and tied for fifth overall as the Barbara Nicklaus Cup wrapped up at the daunting Muirfield Village Golf Club on Tuesday.

The Buffaloes finished with a 54-hole total of 971, tying with Notre Dame for the fifth spot. Tulsa won the team title at 952 thanks to the best team round of the day at 32-over-par, 320. Maryland was second (959), followed by TCU (961) and Furman (967).

Senior Issy Simpson and sophomores Natalie Vo and Lauren Gooding each navigated their way to top 20 finishes. Vo had Colorado's low 54-hole score at 26-over, 242 to tie for 14th. Gooding tied for 17th one stroke back at 27-over, 243, while Simpson tied for 19th at 29-over, 245.

The top 20 finishes were career firsts for Vo and Simpson.

"The team hung in there and fought hard," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "It's a very difficult course and one mistake becomes highly magnified."

The tough Muirfield Village Golf Club proved itself even tougher Tuesday. Home to The Memorial Tournament on the PGA Tour, the 6,362-yard par 72 course had its way with all 40 golfers in the Barbara Nicklaus Cup field.

Muirfield played to an average score of 83, 11-over-par, in the third round. Only seven players shot in the 70s on Tuesday with a 75 from Patricie Mackova of Maryland serving as the low round of the day on her way to a sixth-place finish.

A round of 80 for TCU's Sofia Barroso Sa was good enough to clinch medalist honors at 13-over, 229.

"After our practice round (Sunday) we talked as a team and said that par (here) is really 76 or 77," Kelly said. "We knew it was going to be difficult, and it was a real challenge.

"It's a very nice event. Mrs. Nicklaus spoke to the young women (at dinner on Sunday) and was the starter (on Monday). It's just a fantastic tournament; it's very well done, but this course was so hard. The hardest course I've seen in my career in golf."

Colorado will resume its fall schedule at the Jim West Challenge, scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 23 and Monday, Oct. 24, at the Kissing Tree Golf Club in San Marcos, Texas.

The team is the last at CU to get back in action this semester, but are now I'm sure ready to go in Rancho Santa Fe, CA for their tourney beginning tomorrow.

BOULDER — The University of Colorado women's golf team begins the spring portion of its schedule at the San Diego State Classic, Feb. 13-14, at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.

The 54-hole event begins with two rounds Monday with The Farms par 72 course playing at 6,329 yards for the first 36 holes. The Farms will play slightly shorter for Tuesday's final round at 6,254 yards.

Colorado sports a young lineup for the tournament, which happened often during the fall season. Sophomores Natalie Vo and Lauren Gooding and freshmen Morgan Miller and Makenzie Cooper join Colorado's only upper classman at the event, junior Hailey Schalk.

Gooding and Vo were Colorado's top two golfers during the fall season and the only two that completed all 15 rounds. The sophomore duo were separated by just two strokes during the fall season, with Gooding holding the slight edge with a 75.3 stroke average. She had the fall season's low round with a 5-under 67 in the second round of the Golfweek Red Sky Classic on Sept. 27.

Gooding led Colorado with the most strokes at par or better (201) and had the low 54 round score at 2-under par, 214, at the Jim West Challenge.
....

"We're looking forward to getting the spring season going," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "It's been a slow start to the semester due to weather challenges, but the team has been doing a great job with practice at our indoor facility."

The Buffaloes had several strong showings in amateur tournaments over the mid-season winter break, highlighted by Miller claiming the 90th Doherty Women's Amateur Championship in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Jan. 13. Colorado also spent some time in Arizona a couple weeks ago for a tune up which included a scrimmage with Iowa.

"Our ball striking looks solid and we've been getting in some good short game work," Kelly said. "It will be exciting to see how this translates to tournament play."

Colorado is one of 12 teams participating in the San Diego State Classic, in a field that includes No. 23 Iowa State, No. 27 Houston and No. 40 Georgia. The Buffaloes will pair with Iowa State and BYU for Monday's first two rounds. Those pairings for Monday will begin on holes No. 14 through 18 with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. MT.

BOULDER — The University of Colorado women's golf team continues its spring season at the Juli Inkster at Meadow Club Invitational, March 6-7, in Fairfax, Calif.

The 54-hole event will be played at the 6,157-yard, par 72, Meadow Club Course with the first two rounds on Monday followed by the final 18 holes on Tuesday.

Colorado is one of 13 teams competing at the Juli Inkster at Meadow Club Invitational, with nearly half of the field ranked among the nation's top 40 according to GolfStat, including No. 1 Stanford, No. 5 San Jose State, No. 11 USC and No. 23 Pepperdine.

The Buffaloes will be looking to bounce back from a rough open to the spring season. Three weeks ago, Colorado finished last at the San Diego State Classic. The Buffaloes shot a season-high 43-over par in the first round with all five golfers failing to break 80. Colorado shot better in the final two rounds, finishing at 94-over for the tournament.

"Everybody was extremely disappointed, especially the first round (at San Diego State)," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "It motivated us to work a little bit harder and a little bit smarter and also to take a look at the mental site of the game which is so huge in golf; just being able to control your thoughts and emotions.

"As the saying goes, 'take it one shot at a time'."

That control will once again be critical as the Buffaloes tackle the Meadow Club course, which was designed nearly a century ago by Alister MacKenzie and Robert Hunter on the doorstep of Mount Tamalpais, northwest of San Francisco.

"It's definitely a tough course," Kelly said. "It's an old course that requires a lot of thought and course management. It's going to require a lot of patience.

"We're going to have to putt well. (The course) has pretty undulating greens and they're big. So we'll have to use our imagination and creative thoughts with the break; that touch and feel which we've been working on as much as we can."
...

Colorado will be paired with Washington State and a group of five individuals from San Francisco and California for the first two rounds on Monday. Those groups will start between holes 12 and 15 with a shotgun start scheduled for 9:15 a.m. MT. Tuesday's final round will also feature a shotgun start set for 9:30 a.m. MT.

Weather in the Fairfax area the next two days is calling for temps barely reaching 50 degrees. There's a 50 percent chance of rain showers Monday morning, clearing to partly cloudy in the afternoon and on Tuesday.

The team has headed down to Phoenix to compete at the Ping/ ASU Invitational. Per the ASU preview ( https://thesundevils.com/news/2023/3/22/sun-devil-womens-golf-hosts-ping-asu-invitational.aspx), looks like a fun challenge for CU, as their #78 Golfstat ranking is 16th out of the 17 teams competing in what looks like a solid field (which includes 9 Pac 12 teams).

The 1st Buff is scheduled to tee off at 8:00 AM from the 10th tee. (I'm assuming that's 8:00 local time for Phoenix, so 9:00 AM MT.)

BOULDER — The University of Colorado women's golf team heads to the desert this weekend to play in the PING/ASU Invitational, March 24-26, at the Papago Golf Course in Phoenix.

Colorado is one of 17 teams at the invitational which includes nine Pac-12 Conference foes. Three teams at the invitational are ranked in the top 10 in the nation and 11 are in the top 40.

Colorado's lineup will feature freshman Morgan Miller and sophomores Lauren Gooding and Natalie Vo, the Buffaloes' top three individuals in scoring average and the only three to play in every tournament this season. Graduate senior Haylin Harris will play in her fourth event of the season while senior Issy Simpson is set to make her spring debut.

The Papago Golf Course, which will also host the Pac-12 Championship next month, will play at 6,543 yards for this 54-hole event. It will be the longest course the Buffaloes have competed on this season.

"It's pretty long compared to a lot of courses we've played," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "Ball striking will be very important. There are some holes where you need to hit it at the right spot, or else you end up in the desert, or in trouble, and they have big undulating greens. So being able to hit the green in regulation, but also get it in the right area is very important.

"Lauren and Morgan are pretty long hitters. Natalie has really gained some distance especially with the addition of a new driver recently. So I think that will help."

The PING/ASU Invitational will feature three rounds of 18-holes each, beginning with the first round on Friday, Mar. 24. The Buffaloes will pair with Washington State and New Mexico in the first round with that group teeing off from No. 10 at 9 a.m. MDT.

Live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com.

The team had one of the highest rounds in the field yesterday which caused them fall from a 4 way tie for 6th to 13th (out of 17), but they played better today and kept that 13th place position to the finish. (There are still a few teams on the course, but they're far enough behind or ahead the Buffs so it shouldn't affect their finish.)

Given the good field, this looks to be the best finish of the spring season, as they finished above the 13th, 42nd and 33rd rated teams (per Golfstats' rankiings).

Assume there will be a preview released later today, but just in case wanted to bump this thread with the Pac 12 Championships scheduled to be held tomorrow - Wednesday in Phoenix (at the Papago Golf Course) .

Per https://static.pac-12.com/sports/golf/pdf/2022-23/2023 Golf Championships HTW.pdf , doesn't look like the Pac 12 Network is planning any live coverage, but will be providing daily recaps and highlights, and something called the "Championships Show" (Assume mainly consisting of overall highlights and post-match interviews?) the day after the Championships end (Thursday) at 8:00 PM MT.

Live results - https://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=team&tid=27788

Per the Pairings tab, looks like CU is scheduled to begin their 1st rounds beginning around 10:40 AM MT from the 1st tee, and are paired with UCLA in that round.

Best wishes to the team overall, and the 5 Buffs chosen to compete at the Championships - Haylin Harris, Malak Bouraeda, Isabelle Simpson, Morgan Miller and Natalie Vo!!!

BOULDER — Nothing to lose.

The 2022-23 season has not gone the way the University of Colorado women's golf team would have liked. The Buffaloes have battled inconsistencies up and down the roster which has led to frustrating results. Colorado has finished near or at the bottom of the standings in its last six tournaments, including all four this spring.

But the desire has never left, and the Buffaloes have kept competing. While being somewhat cliché, Colorado certainly has the nothing to lose mindset heading into this week's Pac-12 Women's Golf Championship.

"I think as a team, we're ready," Colorado freshman Morgan Miller said. "We've got nothing to lose. Especially for me, I just have to go out there and play my game, chase after pins and make some putts."

The 2023 Pac-12 Championship will be held at the Papago Golf Course in Phoenix, Monday, April 17 through Wednesday, April 19. The 54-hole tournament will consist of three rounds, 18-holes each day.

Colorado, ranked No. 77 in the latest GolfStat rankings, most likely needs to win the Pac-12 title to advance to NCAA Regional play. The possibility of this being the last tournament of the season has the Buffaloes loose, ready to let it rip beginning Monday.

"We've got nothing to lose at this point," Colorado sophomore Natalie Vo said. "We've come this far, we're going to play our best and compete."

Colorado saw the Papago Course just three weeks ago, competing at the PING/ASU Invitational. An encouraging sign for the Buffaloes is they had their best two spring rounds at Papago, carding 7-over, 295 in both the first and third round on their way to a 13th place finish.

"It was a great opportunity for us to get to know the course," said Miller who finished tied for 38th at 6-over, 222 at the event. "It was the first time I played it in a tournament round. I feel comfortable going in because now I've learned certain holes and what to do, what not to do.

"I've got to be smart on a couple more holes. I made the mistake on 18 and 9 to hit a drive and I got to change a couple clubs off the tee and put myself in a safe spot in the middle of the fairway to get (an easy shot) onto the green."

Papago will play at 6,563 yards for the Pac-12 Championship, 20 yards longer than at the PING/ASU event. It's the second-longest layout in Pac-12 Championship history and only the second over 6,500 yards (Sewailo GC in Tucson was 6,583 yards in 2017.

Colorado will pair with No. 26 UCLA in Monday's first round with the first golfers teeing off from the front nine at 10:40 a.m. MT. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com

Vo, who has been Colorado's top finisher the last two tournaments, had her career-best 54-hole score at the PING/ASU Invitational, tying for 15th overall at 2-over, 218. Vo leads the Buffaloes in season stroke average at 75.7 and is Colorado's No. 1 seeded golfer at the Pac-12 Championship. She finished 47th at the 2022 championship.

"The spring season I started off pretty slow and wasn't exactly very happy with my results," Vo said. "I've been working really hard, trying to perfect my swing again; to be able to play well and just play smart. The past few tournaments have been a good confidence base for me. Everything is in the right place right now."

Miller is Colorado's second-seed and leads the Buffaloes in stroke average for the spring season at 76.0. She has a team-best eight rounds at par or better in 2022-23.

Two long-time Buffaloes are getting their final crack at the Pac-12 Tournament. Senior Issy Simpson will play in her second Pac-12 Championship, but first in a starting capacity. Simpson was a substitute at last season's event, and ended up playing the final round, shooting 4-over 76, after former Buff Diane Baillieux had to withdraw early due to an academic commitment.

Simpson is averaging 77.7 per round during the spring season and overall has shot in the 70s in 12 of her 15 rounds.

Fifth-year senior Malak Bouraeda is set to play in her fourth Pac-12 Championship (no event in 2020). After a battle with health issues, Bouraeda made her season debut at the Chevron Silverado Showdown two weeks ago. Playing as an individual, she tied for 61st at 16-over, 232.

Bouraeda will play in her 39th career tournament for Colorado. She tied for 26th at the 2022 Pac-12 Championship at 8-over, 224.

Graduate senior Haylin Harris will round out the Buffaloes lineup as a late replacement for sophomore Lauren Gooding. Colorado's third-best golfer by stroke average this season at 76.4, Gooding will miss her first tournament this year due to a hand injury.

Harris is appearing in her first Pac-12 Championship, but she's no stranger to postseason events. She made two NCAA Championship appearances for Michigan State in 2019 and 2021.

Overall, I get the impression (largely confirmed by the head coach's quote in the article linked to below) it was a tough/ not very successful Championships (and I believe a tough season in general), now ended, on the course for the team.

Still of course, special best wishes to the graduating seniors or grad students who are advancing in their lives beyond college (or going into grad school), and best wishes to ALL in the classroom and on the links.
