Many of the individual sports are still going on, but with a couple bits of news (affecting the ski and track teams) recently coming out, thought I'd start this thread now for us to note anything interesting anyone see during the off-season for CU's "individual" sports. (All the sports other than skiing are still going on, so any news for them at this point will be going to other dedicated threads.)

  • I already moved a cubuffs release over to this Olympic Sport section (https://www.allbuffs.com/threads/weinberger-named-ski-director-lochhead-head-alpine-coach.155009/), but did also want to briefly mention here the Ski team, whose head coach was terminated mid-season, have announced their new coaching staff. Congrats again to long-term/ Hall of Fame Buff (both as an athlete and Nordic coach) Jana Weinberger being named the team's (overall) ski director, and Ian Lochhead becoming the Head Alpine Coach. Congrats again to both!
(Per the article quoted in the thread linked to above, "Weinberger is the first female head coach or director to oversee a program that includes both Nordic and alpine disciplines in the history of the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association and one just two in NCAA history along with Cami Thompson Graves of Dartmouth. And she is the first female head coach or program director in CU history to oversee a men's program.")

  • @MarkW already noted (in the off-season soccer thread) improvements specifically being made to Prentup Field that are described in a Buffzone article (linked to in the below tweet) that describes improvements being made to various facilities at the Buffs' East Campus athletic areas. From that article, the improvements (just approved by the Regents) also include a new 4,000+ sq. ft. building for Potts Field (the CU Outdoor track), and updating/ improving the current ski team facilities. (It actually sounds like the biggest improvement overall IS the new track facility building (although assume soccer matches may (???) also be able to take advantage of things like the concessions and rest rooms in that new building?.?) I can't remember where I saw it, so don't take this as "gospel", but I think (???) I may have read somewhere that the Buffs are slotted to host next year's (2024) Pac 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which I'd think might be a nice impetus to get these improvements built NOW.)

Missed this originally, but a couple women's golfers have been competing at the "U.S. Women's Amateur Four-Ball Championship", which is scheduled to run from May 13-17 at The Home Course in DuPont, Washington.

This past weekend was the stroke play portion of the Championship, and the Buff duo successfully qualified for today's round of 32 as the match play portion begins. (Looks like they came through under pressure, as they were the 1st of 5 teams who successfully qualified for the round of 32 in a sudden death playoff of 8 teams that were tied at the end of regulation play at -3, with the Buffs earning the spot with a birdie on the 2nd playoff hole.)

Per the live scoring link below, the Buffs are scheduled to tee off at 9:48 AM MT today in their round of 32 match against the #5 seeds.

Not off-season yet for the tennis team, but since it's an award for the whole season (and beyond), thought I'd post this here.

Congrats to Ms. Balzert for the academic honor!

"
BOULDER—Senior Antonia Balzert was named Academic All-District by College Sports Communicators, the organization announced Tuesday.

Balzert, who will graduate from CU with a double degree in Business Marketing and Psychology, was named to the team for maintaining above a 3.5 cumulative grade point average. She is the first CU tennis player to earn All-District distinction by the CSC and will now be placed on the ballot for voting for Academic All-American honors.

Balzert has played the No. 1 singles spot all season and has a 17-15 overall record including 10-10 record in dual matches. She has also teamed with Aya El Sayed at No. 1 doubles all season.

She has helped the team to more wins (12) than any team in seven years and the team's first postseason appearance in 16 years as the squad will close out the season at the Inaugural Universal Tennis NIT.

Her 50 career wins, 14 wins at No. 1 singles and 83 overall victories are all in the CU career charts despite missing a good chunk of her freshman and sophomore seasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A couple of the top incoming CU freshmen distance runners are competing tomorrow evening in one of the 1st of the big summer prep/ post-prep meets, the 2023 Brooks PR Invitational, being held in Renton Washington tomorrow (Wed., June 14th).

Don't know if he'll be racing in everything he's entered in , but per the List of Entries (https://www.nbnationalsout.com/eprofile.php?event_id=3689&do=title&title_id=759 ), he could be busy, as he's entered in the 800M, 1 mile, 2 miles and 4X800M relay Championship races.

Just wanted to mention that I am locking this thread.
(Since all the sports I planned on covering in this thread except for skiing announced, at minimum, their fall schedules a couple weeks ago, I plan on just starting threads that I will use for news regarding the pre- and regular season activities for them individually.)
