As with the other more "individual" sports, thought I'd set up this thread to report on notable results for the indoor track and field men's and women's teams throughout their 2024/25 regular season, as the teams released its schedule yesterday. The thread will also be used for any other general news that pops up during the season regarding the teams and any of their individuals.

I plan to set up a separate thread for the post-season meets. (The Big 12 Championships are 2/27-3/1 in Lubbock and the NCAA Championships are 3/14-15/2025 in Virginia Beach).

A couple quick notes:
  • The team actually started its season LAST weekend at 2 meets. I will post the cubuffs.com articles with the results from those articles in the next post.
  • As I always like to note, my experience is that track and field schedules, at least under the old coaching staff, had / has the most fluid schedule of any CU sport, with meets that Buffs compete at being added and subtracted from the schedule, often with only a week or two notice (at least to the public).

Edit - Mainly copying from prior years' threads, an explanation of how qualifying for the NCAA Championships works for the indoor track and field season:

Unlike outdoors, there are no regional championships competed to choose who advances to the NCAA Indoor Championships. It's merely-
  • In individual events, it's just the athletes who earn the top 16 times or marks during the qualifying period who accept the invitation to go to the championships for that event.
  • For relays, it's the teams with the top 12 times who accept a bid. (A school can only select 1 relay team to represent them.)
  • Note that there are adjustments made for (1) altitude and (2) facility rating. (An Altitude conversion app and facility conversion factor document can be found in the next link below.)
  • Full explanation of qualifying is at http://www.ustfccca.org/meets-results/ncaa-championship-qualifying-criteria#d1ITF .
To keep up with how individual Buffs are placed to qualify, I believe the official resource for times are-
(For awhile, the last full season's (2023/24) results are probably more indicative of potential qualifying marks. Links to last season's results are:
___________________________________________________________________________________________

General generic link for live results (Should always forward to the current meet the Buffs are competing at) - http://www.cubuffs.com/tracklive

The team's 1st of 3 home meets over the next 4 weeks begins tomorrow.
(Right now I can't even find a schedule for this weekend's meet, but hope / assume the team will be releasing something soon. If this is like in prior year's, Friday's events are usually limited to some or all of the (somewhat dangerous) throwing events, along with a jumping event or two. Then, all the running events and the remaining field events are competed on Saturday.)

New York native Nick Bianco continued his stellar indoor season with a first-place finish in the men's heptathlon at the Mines Alumni Classic. Despite entering the final day in fourth place, Bianco surged to the top with 5,591 points, including first-place finishes in the 60-meter hurdles (8.06 seconds) and pole vault (4.80 meters). This marked Bianco's second consecutive weekend on the podium after winning the 60-meter hurdles in Golden.

Home meet day #2 (beginning at 11:00)!
(Usually these early season meets, at least under the prior coaching staff, don't include much action on the distance running side this early in the season, with most of the top Buffs still in high mileage fitness re-building mode after the cross country season and usually not running seriously until the last Buff meet (which is at the end of January - early February this year). Even if this is also what happens today, there is likely to be some fun news in today's racing however, as per her team's Instagram account, #ForeverBuff great Emma Coburn, who's been on the comeback trail since an injury around or during the Paris Olympics, is planning on racing the mile today, with another couple pro teammates (one pacesetting) also opening their 2025 racing in the 800M.)

There’s another home meet starting today!

As with last week’s, seems a little strange to me that no detailed schedule has been released to the public ahead of time, even though I assume today’s action begins within a couple hours. In lieu of one, I’d GUESS (???) it will be similar to last week’s meet, where today’s action will be all the field events, and may (???) begin around noon. (Although, I do wonder if the incoming cold and snow front may affect this meet?)

Buffs Aim for Mile Records at Colorado Classic in Boulder

By: Herman Shelton, Associate Director/Athletic Communications

BOULDER –
The University of Colorado track and field team continues its indoor season as the Buffaloes host the Colorado Classic, the second of three home meets this season, at the Indoor Practice Facility (IPF).
The Colorado Classic will feature the highly anticipated mile run, where the Buffaloes will aim to break both the facility and Colorado state records and attempt to run a sub-four-minute mile. The race is set to begin with the men at 11:45 a.m., followed by the women. The event will feature six to eight runners, all with the potential to break the state record. The current men's state record is 4:00.08, set by Sam Parsons on Jan. 14, 2023, at the IPF.
Former CU standout Emma Coburn returned to Boulder last weekend, making her debut in the IPF at the Potts Invitational. She captured the facility and state indoor records in the women's mile with a time of 4:33.29.

New York native Nick Bianco continued his dominant indoor season, adding three event wins to his resume. Bianco set a personal best in the pole vault, clearing 5.18 meters—the best mark in the nation that weekend. He also captured wins in the high jump with a mark of 1.81 meters and the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.09 seconds, just shy of his personal best of 7.94 all marks were top-10 marks in the nation.
Graduate student Allie Routledge earned her first win of the indoor season, clearing 1.71 meters in the high jump. Sophomore Riley Ward followed closely in second place with a jump of 1.66 meters.
Freshman Cydnee Taylor showcased her strong start to collegiate competition, taking first in the 60 meters with a time of 7.65 seconds, just short of her personal best of 7.57. The CU record of 7.34, set by Amaris Buchanan in 2001, remains unbroken.
In the women's mile, Emma Coburn—representing Team New Balance—claimed first place with her record-breaking performance of 4:33.29 in her IPF debut.

It's (a BIG) running day for this weekend's meet, with racing scheduled to begin at noon!

Colorado Wraps Up Day One of the Colorado Classic

By: Tanner Kay, Athletic Communication Associate

BOULDER – The Colorado Buffaloes Track and Field Program competed in the Colorado Classic Friday afternoon at the Indoor Practice Facility.
Familiar in-state opponents Air Force, Colorado State, Regis, and MSU Denver all competed alongside Colorado during Friday's field events.
Colorado had one event winner along with multiple top-three finishers on the day.
Allie Routledge picked up right where she left off last weekend during the Potts Invitational, winning the women's high jump. She jumped a high of 1.76 meters, a season-high for the graduate student.
Ava Goetz and Riley Ward tied for second behind Routledge, each jumping 1.66 meters. It marked a personal best jump for Ward, narrowly breaking her previous high jump of 1.65 meters. It's the second weekend in a row where Routledge and Ward finished as the top-two women in the high jump.
Jumping 6.55 meters in the long jump last weekend during the Potts Invitational earned Aidan Christiansen a second-place finish on the podium. Christiansen jumped a long of 7.03 meters today, almost jumping a half-meter more than in the previous meet. He once again placed second overall.
Sophomore Drake Miller captured a personal best in the men's shot put, throwing 12.47 meters, good enough for the top finish from a Buff in the event and fourth overall.
Nick Bianco nabbed the final top-three finish for the Buffaloes on the day, jumping a high of 5.00 meters, for a third-place spot on the podium.
SATURDAY'S EVENTS
  • 60 meter hurdles
  • 60 meter races
  • Mile races
  • 200 meter races
  • 400 meter races
  • 600 meter races
  • 800 meter races
  • 3000 meter races
  • 4X400 relay races
UP NEXT
The Buffs will be back in action again tomorrow to wrap up the Colorado Classic. Day two will consist of the track events and will begin at 12 p.m. MT.
"

Last but definitely not least in my catchup of the Olympic sport action from this past weekend, the team competed in its 2nd home meet of the year. The highlight was THREE different men, including 1 Buff, becoming, I believe, the 1st 3 to break the 4 minute mark in a full official meet in the State of Colorado.

Indoor Track and Field Closes Colorado Classic With a Bang

By: Herman Shelton, Associate Director/Athletic Communications

BOULDER –
As an arctic blast swept through Boulder overnight, the extreme cold failed to cool the action inside the University of Colorado's Indoor Practice Facility (IPF). The atmosphere was electric as competitors and fans alike witnessed a thrilling meet. Personal records fell, and a major milestone was achieved—a new Colorado soil and facility record—as the Buffaloes hosted the Colorado Classic, their second of three home meets this indoor season.

Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Sean Carlson aimed to create a premier atmosphere for the mile race and showcase Colorado as a top-tier destination for track meets. If Saturday's race was any indication, his efforts paid off. The Colorado soil and IPF facility records were shattered by three athletes. CSU-Pueblo's Reece Sharman-Newell set the record with a time of 3:59.37, followed closely by unattached runner Yasin Sado at 3:59.56 and Colorado's Isaiah Given, who holds the Buffs' mile record, with a time of 3:59.97.

In the men's 60-meter hurdles, two Buffaloes qualified for the finals. Nick Bianco won Section 1 in the prelims, and John Swabik posted the second-fastest qualifying time. In the finals, Bianco and Swabik finished fourth and fifth, respectively, as Colorado State's Cole Nordman claimed victory with a facility-record time of 7.71.

On the women's side, Jada Green dominated. After recording the fastest prelim time, she continued her momentum in the finals, clearing the hurdles with ease to win in 8.66. Allie Routledge (9.26) and Ava Goetz finished outside the finals, placing eighth and ninth, respectively.
...

The Buffaloes will return to action on January 25 at the UCCS Invite, hosted by the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs at the Mountain Lion Fieldhouse in Colorado Springs.

Givens, Secor and Cherry Top 5 in CU Performance List

By: Herman Shelton, Associate Director/Athletic Communications

BOSTON — The University of Colorado track and field distance team delivered in Boston, at the 2025 John Thomas Terrier Classic, held at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center. The team was led by standout Isaiah Givens, who climbed to No. 2 in CU history in the 3,000 meters with a time of 7:45.01.

The Buffs sent 10 athletes to Boston, and the squad did not disappoint. Nine athletes set personal bests, while one runner competed in his first collegiate 3,000-meter race and placed 30th.

The women's team opened the competition on Friday. Katja Bauerle finished 27th out of 197 runners in the mile with a personal-best time of 4:41.36. Jessica Secor placed 18th out of 167 in the 3,000 meters, clocking a personal-best 9:02.81, which ranks among CU's top-10 performances in the event.

The men's team also shined, with Givens leading the way. He finished fifth overall and was the top collegiate finisher in the 3,000 meters. Nine of the 10 CU men placed in the top 30: Chris Cherry (9th, 7:48.03), Kole Mathison (19th, 7:52.66, improving his previous mark by 28 seconds), Grady Rauba (20th, 7:52.66), Lukas Haug (25th, 7:56.08), Charles Robertson (29th, 7:57.53), Wilson George (30th, 7:58.15, in his first collegiate 3,000-meter race), and Ethan Edgemont (34th, 8:00.17).

The meet, one of the most popular on the distance-running circuit, featured 232 men in the 3,000-meter race alone.

The CU distance squad will take a week off before returning to Boston for the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Valentine's Day weekend. The men will compete on Feb. 14, followed by the women on Feb. 15.

Looking back at last wee's action, it was short on quantity, as only the multi-eventers were in action, but it had some great performances, lead by Buffs winn both the men's and women's competitions. I was especially impressed by grad student Allie Rutledge, who PR'd in every one of her 5 events to SMASH her pentathlon PR and jump up to #2 all-time in the CU performers' list. (Her total also puts her #2 in the all-time Scottish record book.)

Routledge Leads the Way in Pentathlon, CU Multi-Event Athletes Deliver Strong Performances

By: Herman Shelton, Associate Director/Athletic Communications

SPOKANE, Wash.
– The University of Colorado track and field's multi-event group recorded a strong performance during the 2025 Riverfront Invitational in Spokane on Thursday.
The Riverfront Invitational serves as one of the last-chance meets for multi-event athletes to earn enough points to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Senior Allie Routledge did just that, delivering the best performance of her collegiate career.
The pentathlon consists of five events, and Routledge recorded personal bests in all five. She opened the day by nearly shaving a second off her 60-meter hurdles time 8..08, finishing 11th. She then cleared 1.81 meters in the high jump, tying for 19th best in the NCAA and moving to fourth all-time on CU's performance list while securing first place in the event. In the shot put, Routledge threw 10.73 meters for another personal best, finishing eighth. She followed with a career-best long jump of 5.65 meters to take second place. In her final event, Routledge ran 2:15.79 in the 800 meters, another personal best, to finish first.
She accumulated a meet and career-high 4,120 points, the second-highest total in CU history and in Scotland history. She now ranks 13th in the NCAA, which, if it stands, qualifies her for the 2025 NCAA Indoor Championships.
Eva Bruce, competing in her first pentathlon of the season, finished sixth with 3,604 points, recording a personal best in the shot put with a throw of 10.79 meters and running a season-best 8.80 in the 60-meter hurdles. Riley Burke placed eighth with 3,584 points, recording a personal best in the 60 hurdles at 9.35 seconds. Freshman Ava Goetz also recorded personal bests in the 60 hurdles (9.18) and the 800 (2:28.39). She finished second in the high jump (1.70 meters) and placed 12th overall with 3,471 points.
In the men's heptathlon, John Swabik leads the Buffs in second place after four events with 3,010 points, just 17 points behind first. Swabik opened with a personal-best 7.08 in the 60 meters, finishing third. He also placed second in the long jump (7.01 meters) and the shot put (12.18 meters) and took fourth in the high jump (1.91 meters).
Teammate Nick Bianco is close behind in fourth with 2,947 points, earning first-place finishes in the long jump (7.08 meters) and high jump (1.94 meters). Drake Miller recorded a personal best in the 60 meters (7.15) and has 2,690 points after four events.

Bianco Wins Heptathlon at Riverfront Invitational

By: Herman Shelton, Associate Director/Athletic Communications

SPOKANE, Wash.
– The University of Colorado track and field's Nick Bianco recorded a strong second day to capture first place in the heptathlon at the 2025 Riverfront Invitational.

The heptathlon concluded Friday, with Bianco taking first place after entering day two in fourth. John Swabik fell to seventh after failing to clear the bar in the pole vault, recording 3,765 points.

With Friday's performance and results around the NCAA, Bianco fell two spots in the performance rankings, sitting just outside the top 16 in 18th place. Swabik ranks 26th.

Buffs Track and Field Spreads Out for Key Weekend Meets

By: Herman Shelton, Associate Director/Athletic Communications

BOULDER –
The Colorado indoor track and field team will spread out this weekend, competing in three meets across three states.

The distance squad will travel to Boston, the sprinters will head to Lubbock, Texas, and the multis and throws will compete in Colorado Springs.

Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational

Seventeen athletes, six women and 11 men will compete over two days in Boston.

The men will compete first on Friday, Feb. 14, across three events. The Boston University meets are marquee distance events on the indoor circuit. In 2023, all 16 men's qualifiers in the 5,000 meters came from this meet. The Boston meets have been favorable for Colorado. At the Terrier Classic on Jan. 31, Isaiah Givens climbed to No. 2 in CU history in the 3,000 meters with a time of 7:45.01, the fastest collegiate time that weekend and 10th in the nation. If the season ended today, that mark would qualify him for the 2025 NCAA Indoor Championships. Currently ranked 13th in the nation is Chris Cherry, who ran 7:48.03 at the same meet. Givens also ranks 11th in the NCAA in the mile after breaking the IPF facility and the Colorado soil record with a time of 3:54.12. The Buffs' 3,000-meter squad is ranked No. 1 in the country after their performance at the Terrier Classic, with four athletes ranked in the top 38 and two in the top 15.

In the 5,000 meters, James Overberg is ranked 38th in the nation after finishing 28th at the same meet.

On the women's side, Jessica Secor will look to improve her No. 23 national ranking in the 3,000 meters after running a personal best of 9:02.81 for an 18th-place finish at the Terrier Classic.

To qualify for the NCAA Championships, athletes need to rank in the top 16. The current qualifying marks are as follows:

  • Mile: Men – 3:54.24, Women – 4:31.89
  • 3,000m: Men – 7:49.52, Women – 8:59.10

Preview as the biggest meet of the season, the Big 12 Championships, starts its 2 day run tomorrow in Lubbock - https://cubuffs.com/news/2025/2/27/track-field-heads-to-lubbock-for-big-12-indoor-championships

From a Big 12 preview (https://big12sports.com/news/2025/2...championship-set-for-friday-and-saturday.aspx ), there are 4 men's and women's team in the Top 25 of the rankings right now, with the Buffs not in either. On the men's side, host and #4 ranked Tech will be looking for its 3rd straight conference championships, with #11 OSU the closest to them in the rankings. On the women's side, Tech is also #4, but look to have a bigger battle on their hands, led by #2 BYU.

Per the below article, probably the top CU male runner will be skipping this meet as he instead will be running on the EXTREMELY fast and springy Boston Univ. track at a meet there in an attempt to qualify for the NCAA Championships.

Bump as the championships have begun, with the multi-eventers already well into their competitions with 2 events completed on the men's side and the women in the middle of their 2nd.

The teams seem to largely be in a rebuilding mode, with the new coach obviously handling what is a generally pretty young distance side, and even the established assistant coaches in the other disciplines (sprints, multi-eventers and field events) lost some of their top point scorers and NCAA Championship qualifier level student-athletes to graduation last academic year. So, not really a surprise it was a pretty quiet Big 12 Championships (they were held 2/27-2/28) for CU, at least points-wise, with the men finishing 12th (out of 13 conference schools with men's track and field) and the women finishing 16th. Would say it was cool to see both the men and women finishing 3rd in the distance medley relay, which are always fun races. Also, there were still some nice marks from a CU and personal perspective.

Now, the only thing left for this Indoor season is the NCAA Championships, scheduled for this Friday and Saturday in Virginia Beach.

1 Buff has qualified, and that's junior Isaiah Givens in the mile. Best wishes to him this Friday (semis; scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM MT) and, hopefully Saturday (final; scheduled to be run at 4:00 PM MT)!

Live video - Looks like there are different broadcasts scheduled, with all on ESPN+. The Championships are set up this year on the track so that all women's races are run 1st in one session, and then the men are later in the day:
  • On Friday, looks like the 1st women's race is scheduled to start at 1:30 PM MT and the men start at 5:00 PM MT, while
  • Saturday's track action starts at 1:00 PM MT for the women and 4:00 PM MT for the men.
  • Even earlier on both days are separate streams to cover the field events (and I assume maybe the multi-events?), with Friday's stream I believe scheduled to begin at 7:10 AM MT and Saturday's at 8:30 AM MT.

Congrats to Mr. Givens, who per live results looks to have qualified for tomorrow's final as the 2nd time qualifier!

BIG congrats to Isaiah Givens, who earns (I believe 1st Team?) All-American honors and breaks his own school record by over a second (he ran 3:54.84 today) with his 5th place finish in the just-completed mile final!

Media after Mr. Givens' very good result at the Championships. (With the 4 points he earns for his 5th place finish, the Buffs end up in a 5 way tie for 41st at the Championships (per https://flashresults.ncaa.com/Indoor/2025/scores.htm ).)
