With men's golf being one of those Buff sports that has MANY tournaments in both the fall and spring semesters, I wanted to set up a thread that as normal we can use to cover anything that comes up on and off the course related to the team up through the Big 12 Championships (scheduled to begin April 27th, 2026 in Hutchinson, Kansas). (I'll give the NCAA Championships their own thread if/ when the Buffs' team earn a regional berth.)

I'm starting this thread now as yesterday the team released its current year schedule (https://cubuffs.com/sports/mens-golf/schedule) Per that, the 1st tournament is scheduled to be in Pullman Washington from Sept. 9-10. Also wanted to note that there are 2 concurrent home tournaments (1 in Erie and 1 in Broomfield) scheduled for late September.

An article with the schedule as it now stands -

Edwards Announces 2025-26 Men's Golf Schedule

Many familiar events plus two new ones mark schedule

By: David Plati, SID-Emeritus/Athletic Historian

BOULDER — University of Colorado men's head golf coach Roy Edwards announced the team's 2025-26 schedule Friday, and with the Buffaloes coming off one of its best seasons in its 101-year history, the schedule has a familiar look for the most part with the exception of two new events for the first time.

Edwards is entering his 20th season at the reins of the Buffalo program, with this year's team one of his younger ones (just one senior – as compared to five on the '24-25 team that finished 23rd in the nation. But the eight-man roster is not devoid of talent and figures to contend for postseason for the third time in the last four years. In addition to one senior, there are two juniors, two sophomores and two true freshmen in addition to a graduate transfer who has two years of eligibility remaining.

"We have a lot of experience on this team with everyone on the lineup getting a lot of tournament reps," Edwards said. "I'm very excited about hitting the ground running this fall and then also how the team develops throughout the season. It has a chance to be a special group."

For the second straight year, the season will get underway at Washington State's Palouse Collegiate in Pullman on Sept. 9-10. The Buffaloes played in the tourney for the first time last year and finished second with a 34-under par team effort, the fourth-best by a CU team in relation to par (with the team total of 818 the second-lowest gross score). It's one of seven tournaments in the Pacific Time Zone that Colorado will play in – along with four in the Mountain and one each in the Central and the Hawai'ian.

The Buffs then play on the Front Range for the next three tournaments, beginning with the New Mexico William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque (Sept. 19-20), the 69th time CU will play in the Lobos' premier meet that it finally broke through and won for the first time last year. Next on the docket will be the 15th annual Mark Simpson-Colorado Invitational (Sept. 29-30) at Colorado National Golf Club in Erie. The Buffaloes have won their own meet eight times in the 14 years of its existence, with runner-up finishes the last three seasons. Simultaneously, CU will host the second CU-Les Fowler Individual Invitational at the Broadlands Golf Course in Broomfield; it's been resurrected from its first time in 2019 and will be filled by additional players from the teams competing in the Simpson.

CU then will head back west to play for the first time in the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational (Oct. 9-11), hosted by the University of the Pacific. The Buffaloes close out the fall portion of its schedule once again in Hawaii's Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate (Oct. 27-29), where last November CU finished second and made another dent in the record book with a 36-under team score of 816, the latter the all-time school best.

Colorado will open the spring portion of the season for the second straight year in The Prestige at PGA West (Feb. 16-18), the tournament that former CU head coach, the late Mark Simpson, help create back in 2000-01; this will be the 13th time the Buffaloes will participate after finishing fifth in La Quinta on the Norman Course last February. The Buffaloes will remain in the area, popping over to Palm Desert and The Classic Club for the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate (Feb. 23-25). Next up will be the Lamkin San Diego Classic (March (9-10) at San Diego Country Club with a quick turnaround for Arizona's Thunderbirds Intercollegiate in Tucson (March 16-17), another first for the program. Colorado will close the month in Stanford's "The Goodwin" in Palo Alto (March 26-28), the 28th time the Buffaloes are entered in the tourney. CU finished second in both San Diego and Palo Alto last March.

The final tune-up ahead of the league meet will be Arizona State's Thunderbird Intercollegiate (April 10-11), a tournament CU has played in on and off 17 times since 1973 and another the Buffs finished second in last April. The Big 12 Conference Championship closes out the regular season (April 27-29), set for the always challenging Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.; CU finished sixth in its return to the conference last April.

The NCAA Regionals are set for May 18-20 at six different sites: Bermuda Run, N.C. (hosted by Wake Forest); Athens, Ga. (U. of Georgia); Columbus, Ohio (Ohio State); Bryan, Texas (Texas A&M); Marana, Ariz. (Arizona State); and Corvallis, Ore. (Oregon State). The NCAA Championship Finals are set for May 29-June 3 in Carlsbad, Calif., where the University of Texas will once again host the event at La Costa Golf Club. After four days of stroke play, the champion is then determined in a match play format with the top eight teams advancing.

Individuals who are not on the travel squad or who rotate in-and-out will also play in some select other tournaments as long as they are within their competition day maximums to do so.
"

The Buffs are starting the season with a solid ranking. Hope they can build on that and end up even better!

Hunter Swanson returns as CU's lone senior for the '25-26 campaign.

Men's Golfers Set To Open '25-26 Season Tuesday In The Pacific Northwest

Edwards Begins His 20th Season As CU’s Head Coach

By: David Plati, SID-Emeritus/Athletic Historian

BOULDER — The University of Colorado men's golf team will open the fall portion of its schedule this Tuesday, Sept. 9, heading to the Pacific Northwest for the second straight season to participate in Washington State's Palouse Collegiate.

Two rounds are scheduled for Tuesday and the final 18 on Wednesday at Palouse Ridge Golf Club, a 7,302-yard, par-71 that opened in 2008. It's one of the higher courses outside of the Rocky Mountain region, with an average elevation of 2,600 feet. The weather forecast at present has high temperatures around 70 degrees with a 50 percent chance of rain showers both days.

The event was most friendly to the Buffaloes last September, as CU finished second with a 34-under par team score, the fourth-best by a CU team in relation to par (with the team total of 818 the second-lowest gross score). Four CU duffers finished in the top 25, three in the top 15 as the six competing Buffs a year ago recorded scores of par or better in 15 of 18 rounds.

Colorado is in its 20th season under head coach Roy Edwards, who mentored one of the best teams in the program's history last year. But the Buffaloes lost five seniors to graduation from that '24-25 squad, including one of the best 1-2 duos in school history, Justin Biwer and Dylan McDermott. Between the two, they combined to set 44 school records while tying 17 others, including most of the major scoring marks. Thus, the natural question is can the Buffs keep that momentum or even build on it from a team that won one tournament, with six runner-up finishes along with two third places, one of which came in the NCAA regional. The Buffs finished 23rd in the NCAA Finals and were ranked 32nd in the final Clippd/Scoreboard computer poll 34th in the GCAA/Coaches poll.

However, this edition of the Buffaloes has also gained some respect from the outset: Golfweek ranked CU 26th in its return to creating national rankings, while the coaches pegged the Buffaloes 32nd in their preseason poll. Colorado returns five lettermen from the '24-25 unit, most of whom saw plenty of action, combining for 139 rounds among them and a healthy 72.01 stroke average.

In addition to host WSU and the Buffaloes, the 12-team field includes Boise State, Eastern Washington, Fresno State, Idaho, Oregon State, Pacific, Santa Clara, San Jose State, Seattle and Southern Illinois.

Edwards held four qualifying rounds over the past week at various challenging courses around the metro area, and it was extremely competitive from top to bottom among the CU roster. Earning the top spot was sophomore Parker Paxton, who finished with a 7-under 73-67-70-71—281 total to best junior Ty Holbrook by three shots. Holbrook did have the low score in the four qualifiers, a 7-under 65 in the opening round at Colorado National Golf Club, CU's home course. The other courses included CNGC for the second round, TPC Colorado (Championship Course) and Bear Creek Golf Club.

Six players will make the trip to Pullman; in addition to Paxton and Holbrook, the other three designated scorers will be senior Hunter Swanson, junior Brandon Knight and freshman Tyler Long. First-year graduate student Jackson Rivera will participate as an individual.

Paxton earned the No. 1 spot for opener by winning the qualifier; he appeared in seven tournaments for CU as a true freshman, all as an individual. This will be the first time his score will count in the team scoring. Long is the first freshman to make CU's initial starting scorers since 2022, when Swanson performed well in Notre Dame's Fighting Irish Classic, where he tied for 32nd (out of 84 players) with a 1-over 71-67-73—211 effort.

Swanson paced the Buffaloes last year in Pullman, finishing fourth overall with a 12-under 65-67-69—201 scorecard. It was one of the best performances of his career, as he had 15 birdies with 36 pars and only three bogeys. Knight tied for 25th with a 4-under 66-71-72—209 performance, while Holbrook tied for 48th with a solid 1-over 73-70-71—214 performance.

The other two players on Colorado's 8-man roster, sophomore Michael Fang and freshman Casey Kosner will compete individually the following two days in Colorado State's Ram Masters Invitational (Sept. 11-12) at Fort Collins Country Club.

"'We're excited to get started in Pullman," Edwards said. "We let qualifying do the talking for us with the lineup with guys being very competitive. Hunter, being our only senior, has really taken a leadership role both from the golf/sport side but also from just being a friend and gathering the team for various outings. Michael and Casey will have an opportunity to compete at Colorado State so everyone will get some tournament data on the board right from the start. If we work hard and play with confidence and discipline, I expect us to once again be a very good team."

Colorado will be paired with the host Cougars, Oregon State and Pacific for Tuesday's first two rounds, and will begin play on holes 1 through 4 in a shotgun format at 9 a.m. MDT. The final round on Wednesday will commence at 8:45 a.m. (also a shotgun start).

NOTES: Edwards is now the 12th coach to serve as a head coach of a CU athletic program for at least 20 seasons, the third in men's golf, behind Les Fowler and Mark Simpson, both of whom coached for 29 seasons, Fowler from 1948 through 1976, Simpson from January 1977 to December 2005. The others: Frank Potts, Men's Cross Country & Track (41 seasons, 1927-68); Charles Vavra, Men's Gymnastics (32, 1930-61); Richard Rokos, Men's & Women's Skiing (31, 1991-2021); Mark Wetmore, Men's & Women's Cross Country/Track & Field (29, 1995/96-2023/24); Anne Kelly, Women's Golf (27, 1997-2024); Frank Prentup, Baseball (24, 1946-69); Sox Walseth, Men's (20) & Women's (3) Basketball (23, 1956-76; 1980-83); Ceal Barry, Women's Basketball (22; 1983/84-2004/05); and Dick Gray, Men's Tennis (22, 1946-67) … As was the case last year, the 756 miles between Boulder and Pullman are the fifth-longest road trip to open a season in CU history; the 999 miles to South Bend on two occasions (2004, 2022) to play in Notre Dame's meet, followed by 949 miles for San Francisco's Olympic Club tourney in 2008 and then 933 miles to Pebble Beach for St. Mary's home meet in 2007. It remains one of the rare times Colorado's first tournament of the season isn't in the state, or nearby in New Mexico or Wyoming.

I couldn't find official confirmation, but a potential leaderboard is at https://scoreboard.clippd.com/tournaments/238836/scoring/team .

The tourney looks like a go. Per the leaderboard link in my last post, looks like the 1st round tee-offs may (???***) begin around 9:00 AM MT and the 2nd round at 2:00 PM MT. (Of course, with golf, times are always weather dependent.)
(***I'm currently in the Eastern time zone, and am GUESSING, but am not sure, that the leaderboard website is automatically translating the times to ET.)

Golfers Tie For Third In Season Opener

Paxton, Swanson Lead Buffaloes As Both Tie For Fifth

By: David Plati, SID-Emeritus/Athletic Historian

PULLMAN, Wash. — The University of Colorado men's golf team moved up one spot here Wednesday to finish in a tie for third place in Washington State's Palouse Collegiate, the opening event in CU's 102nd season of varsity competition

Host Washington State, with four players in the top nine, cruised to the win with a 45-under par team score of 807. The COugas held off Santa Clara, who finished six strokes back with an 813 score, while Colorado and the University of the Pacific tying for third with 28-under 824 tallies. Boise State rounded out the top five with an 829 total.

Colorado, ranked 26th in the preseason by Golfweek, recorded subpar team scores all three rounds, with the 28-under effort the eighth best 54-hole team score in relation to par in school history (fourth-best for a par-71 course). The 824 gross count became the fourth-lowest entry in the Buff record book.

"'We learned a lot about the team this week," head coach Roy Edwards said. "I believe it's going to be a special group who has a high desire to compete. As we move forward consistency and continuing to have a deeper understanding of our Golf IQ will be paramount. It was a good way to get started."

Two Buffaloes tied for fifth in the individual standings, the 39th time that has happened in school history. And both also recorded all three rounds in the 60's, the 18th time that has occurred in Buff annals (21 times including three occasions for four rounds).

USC graduate transfer Jackson Rivera tied for 61st as he wrapped with an even-par 71 for 6-over 219 scorecard, as he rallied from an opening round 80, playing the last 35 holes at 3-under after the first 17 at 9-over. He finished with 11 birdies (six in the final round) and 31 pars against 10 bogeys, two doubles and a triple, playing the par-5's the best at 3-under. He did tame the par-3 holes, as after playing those 6-over in the first round, he played the 10 combined at 3-under the last two rounds (three birdies, seven pars).

Swanson recorded two top five finishes in this event including last year's fourth place effort. He had total command of his game on the 7,302-yard, par-71 Palouse Ridge Golf Club course layout, scoring 27 birdies and 76 pars with only five bogeys over the six rounds, scoring in the 60's every round with runs of 28 and 35 straight holes of par or better.

Sophomore Parker Paxton caught Swanson in the final round with a sparkling 76-under 65, his collegiate career best that enabled him to finish with a 10-under 203. He closed with an eagle, a team-high seven birdies and seven pars against three bogeys, with his 16 birdies overall the fourth-most in the 83-man field. He otherwise had 30 pars, six bogeys and a double while playing all three configurations under par for the first time in his career: 2-under on the par-3's and par-4's and 6-under under on the par-5's.

Junior Brandon Knight finished up with a 2-under 69, matching his first round score in tying for 21st with a 5-under 208 total. He had his second eagle in the event Wednesday, this time on the 552-yard, par-5 18th hole (after he scored a 2 on the par-4 No. 2 in the opening round). He otherwise had three birdies and 11 pars with three bogeys Wednesday, with 11 birdies and 32 pars to go with his two eagles, the latter tying for the most in the field. He played the par-4 holes the best by all the Buffaloes at 5-under.

Junior Ty Holbrook tied for 34th after closing with an even par 71, giving him a 1-under 212 overall score. He was fairly steady with six birdies and eight pars the third time around the Palouse Ridge track (he started on the 3rd hole), with three bogeys and an unfortunate triple bogey he had to endure on the 526-yard, par-4 17th. To his credit, he bounced right back with a birdie on No. 18, parred No. 1 and ended his ay with a birdie on No. 2. He recorded 14 birdies – the second-most by a Buff here – with 27 pars while playing the par-5's at 10-under –tying for the best in the entire field. In fact, he played the last nine par-5s all under par, with eight birdies and an eagle.

Freshman Tyler Long played his first collegiate event as an individual, and despite dealing with a mild back injury, wound up tying for 42nd with a 1-over 214 total. He closed with his first subpar round (1-under 70), and managed 12 birdies and 32 pars opposite seven bogeys and three doubles. His 1-over performance tied for the 12th-best in relation to par by a Buffalo in his first collegiate tournament, with the 214 gross score tying for the seventh-lowest. Of the 23 players competing here as individuals, he tied for fifth among the group (Fresno State's James Watney led with a 6-under 207).

"Hunter and Parker had really nice events, and Tyler had a good first outing especially considering he was fighting a bad back," Edwards noted. "Jackson had a nice comeback after some first round struggles, and both Brandon and Ty had some really good moments as well."

Washington State's Dylan Burcham claimed medalist honors, firing a third straight 5-under 66 for a 15-under 198 total, edging Santa Clara's Calder Overfelt by a stroke.

The Buffaloes will return to action as a full team next Friday, competing once again in the 70th annual New Mexico William M. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, Sept. 19-20. However, the two remaining team members who did not compete here, sophomore Michael Fang and freshman Casey Kosney, will play as individuals this Thursday and Friday in Colorado State's Ram Masters Invitational at Fort Collins Country Club.
