I always like to set up these threads for all the sports to account for any off-season and spring (for this sport) scrimmage and training period news.

1st, just a quick look back with some summary numbers from this past season:
Record - 23-9 overall; 12-6 in the regular season in their 2nd season back in the Big 12, which them in a tie (with Iowa State and Baylor) for 3rd place in the standings ( https://big12sports.com/standings.aspx?standings=203&path=vb). (They did beat both ISU and Baylor in their single match-ups during the season, so CU would have been the 3rd seed if they had a conference volleyball tourney.)

The team's ratings and rankings from the sources I could find:
National Ranking -
In the last ranking available as I type this (dated 11/30), CU was the #24 ranked team in the main (AVCA, Coaches) poll before the NCAA tourney began.
RPI - Before the NCAA Tournament began (report dated 11/30), the Buffs had a #24 RPI (per https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/volleyball-women/d1/ncaa-womens-volleyball-rpi).
KPI (https://faktorsports.com/) - Along with RPI, the other rating that is available for the NCAA Tourney selection committee is KPI. In the latest rating (dated 12/7 so after the 1st weekend of tourney matches), the Buffs are at #20.
Massey (https://masseyratings.com/cvol/11590/ratings) - #29 (as of 12/9).

Then, a few things I wanted to note:

  • The BIG change the NCAA voted on that began last (2025/26) academic year for ALL sports was that maximum roster numbers have I believe been set for every sport, and scholarship maximums have been increased so that a school MAY (but doesn't have to) issue full scholarships to all student-athletes up to the new roster limits. Specifically related to volleyball:
    • Max rosters starting last academic year is 18 for volleyball. (This past season, CU's roster was only 15, a decent change from the 2023 and 2024 seasons when they had 19.)
    • The scholarship limit of 18 is a 50% increase from 2024 and earlier, which was 12. (Of course, no school HAS to increase their scholarship numbers (although Title IX still applies), so this may create more of a "have and have not" disparity between schools based on who has the resources and motivation to compete for championships in various Olympic sports they choose to prioritize.)
  • I'd already reported it in the signing news thread, but also wanted to note here that the team announced an (initial) 4 student-athlete frosh class for the coming season. The article is at https://cubuffs.com/news/2025/11/13/colorado-volleyball-signs-four-standout-buffs-to-2026-roster . (Per the article, 2 of the 4 frosh, setter Richardson and middle block Hennessy, plan to be early enrollees and starting at CU in January.)
  • With that announcement, and with 2 recognized on last week's Senior Day, looks like, before any potential outgoing transfers, there is room for 1 more to be added to the team if they want to go to the new 18 player roster limit (15 in the 2025 roster - 2 recognized seniors + 4 announced froshies = 17). (Even with the starting libero graduating, there are still 4 defensive specialist / liberos (DS/L) on the roster. However, with some injury issues this past season straining the team a few matches late in the season, and with none of the incoming frosh players being DS/L's, and with the team's only incoming transfers the last 2 years being DS/L's, I would GUESS that, if there are any incoming transfers (or additional frosh commits), there's a decent chance they could be DS/L's. Or course, if they lose players in any other position, that could very much change what the coaches may look to add, likely through the transfer portal.)
  • I assume the team has HIGH expectations this coming year, as, pending any unfortunate transfers, ALL the starting veteran offensive/ front line players are hopefully returning, with 4 being seniors and 1 a junior next season. The obvious questions that will need to be answered include (in addition to competition among all the other hitters and middle blockers as they try to earn starting spots over the veterans): (1) the team will probably need to be on its 3rd setter in 3 seasons, with this year's redshirt junior setter Rian Finley recognized on senior day. (The 2 known setters on the roster will be young, 1 a sophomore and 1 an incoming frosh.) (2) The team will also need to be replacing 2 year starting libero Sarah Morton. (I'd assume this past season transfer and main defensive specialist Peyton Neal MIGHT be the favorite, but I'm sure the other 4 on the roster will also be working to be contributors on the court, including mainstay serving specialist Avery Bolles from 2 seasons ago hopefully back after missing almost if not all this season with an injury.)

The main reason I started this thread now - BIG Congrats are in order to junior outside hitter Ana Burilović , who was named to the All-West Region 1st team!

Colorado Volleyball’s Burilovic Named to AVCA All-West Region First Team

By: Malala Pyle, Assistant Director of Athletic Communication

LEXINGTON, Ky. –
Colorado volleyball junior pin attacker Ana Burilovic (Split, Croatia) was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association's (AVCA) All-West Region First Team on Tuesday, Dec. 9.

Burilovic's all-region selection marks the program's 30th postseason regional selection all-time. This is also her second postseason award after being named to the 2025 All-Big 12 First Team last week. The last time Colorado was named to the All-Region First Team was middle blocker Naghede Abu and outside hitter Alexa Smith in 2018. Colorado's last all-region selection was an honorable mention for middle blocker Meegan Hart in 2020. Colorado's first appearance on the all-region team was the first team for setter Nicole Vranesh in 1992.

Burilovic leads the Big 12 in points per set (5.47) and kills per set (4.71). She is also third in conference for aces per set (0.43). This is Burilovic's first all-region selection of her career. In her 32 matches in 2025, she has accumulated 565 kills, 211 digs, 51 aces, 64 blocks and 19 assists. Burilovic has four kill-dig double-doubles on the season, now totaling 10 in her career. She has had 13 matches with 20 or more kills this season (a CU VB record), including two 30+ kill matches against UCF (Oct. 2) and at Northern Colorado (Oct. 28) – she is only the second player in Colorado Volleyball history to have two matches in one season with over 30 kills. On Sept. 30, Burilovic was named AVCA Player of the Week after aiding the Buffs in their road-sweep over then-No.14 BYU, and then-No.23 Utah. She was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week on Nov. 4, after leading Colorado's win over Northern Colorado with 30 kills, hitting .329, nine digs, two blocks and one ace (Oct. 28). Burilovic surpassed 1,000 career kills at West Virginia, becoming the 19th Buff to total over 1,000 career kills. She now has 1,061 career kills, 521 career digs, 118 career aces and 116 career blocks.

Fourteen student-athletes were selected to the AVCA All-West Region First Team, and six were named Honorable Mention. A full list of the honorees can be found after this release.

Under 10th-year head coach Jesse Mahoney, Colorado finished the 2025 season 23-9 and went 12-6 against Big 12 opponents. Coach Mahoney has led the Buffs to a 164-135 record in his 10 seasons at the helm. The Buffs made their 22nd appearance in the NCAA tournament after the conclusion of the regular season, sweeping American in the first round before falling to four-seed Indiana in the second round. The Buffs' last match against the Hoosiers marks the 12th second round appearance in program history. Colorado has 20 wins this season, marking the program's 13th 20-win season and its first since 2022. With 23 wins this season, this is the most in a season since 2017 and ties for the third-most wins in a season in program history.

I wish that the Big 12 would start having a VB tournament for the conference championship. The popularity of the sport justifies it.

Tonight is the NCAA volleyball final four. A&M plays Pitt in the first match, followed by Wisconsin vs. Kentucky. Christmas came early this year; both previously-undefeated Nebraska and Texas were upset in the quarterfinals. I'm pulling for Pitt, but I'm mostly happy to see both the corn and the horn are eliminated. I'd love to see CU advance this far at some point in my lifetime.

And, after already being named All-Conference 1st Team, Ms. Burilović earns an even bigger honor, as she's been named to the main (AVCA) All-American 3rd Team.

Congrats to her!

Colorado Volleyball Pin Attacker Ana Burilovic Named AVCA All-American

By: Malala Pyle, Assistant Director of Athletic Communication

LEXINGTON, Ky. –
Colorado volleyball junior pin attacker Ana Burilovic (Split, Croatia) was selected to the American Volleyball Coaches Association's (AVCA) All-America Third Team on Wednesday, Dec. 17.

Burilovic's selection makes her the volleyball program's seventh All-American (sixth athlete), and she collects the fifth presented by the AVCA (since 1981). She becomes the Buffs' first AVCA All-American since middle blocker Naghede Abu was named to the third team at the conclusion of the 2018 season. The Buffs also boast six previous AVCA All-American honorable mentions and two Volleyball Magazine All-American honorable mentions.

"We couldn't be more proud of Ana's efforts and achievements this season, and it's gratifying to see her get the recognition she deserves," head coach Jesse Mahoney stated. "She has grown into one of the premier six-rotation players in the country."

Last week, Burilovic was named to the AVCA All-West Region First Team for the first time in her career, just a week after being selected to the 2025 All-Big 12 First Team. On Sept. 30, Burilovic was named AVCA Player of the Week and Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week after aiding the Buffs in their road sweep over then-No. 14 BYU and then-No. 23 Utah. She was named Big 12 OPOW again on Nov. 4, after leading Colorado's win over Northern Colorado with 30 kills, hitting .329, nine digs, two blocks and one ace (Oct. 28). At the beginning of the season, Burilovic was selected to the 2025 Preseason Big 12 Team, and she was on the Anteater Classic and Buffs Invitational all-tournament teams.

Burilovic led the Big 12 in points per set with 5.47, good for sixth in the NCAA, and in kills per set with 4.71, good for ninth in the country. She was also third in conference for aces per set with 0.43, landing at 46th in the country. In the NCAA, Burilovic was also fifth for total points (656.0), seventh for total attacks (1,424), eighth for total kills (565), 17th for attacks per set (11.87), and 23rd for total aces (51).

In her 32 matches in 2025, she has accumulated 565 kills, 211 digs, 51 aces, 64 blocks and 19 assists. Burilovic has four kill-dig double-doubles on the season, now totaling 10 in her career. She has had 13 matches with 20 or more kills this season (a CU VB record). Burilovic surpassed 1,000 career kills at West Virginia, becoming the 19th Buff to total over 1,000 career kills. She now has 1,061 career kills, 521 career digs, 118 career aces and 116 career blocks.

At the end of the 2025 season, Burilovic leads the program in rally-scoring era aces with 115, putting her at eighth overall. She is also 15th in CU history for career kills (1,061), and second overall for kills in a single season with 537. Additionally, with two 30-kill matches against UCF (Oct. 2) and at Northern Colorado (Oct. 28), she is only the second player in Colorado Volleyball history to have two matches in a single season with over 30 kills.

Fourteen student-athletes across the country were selected to the AVCA All-America Third Team, 14 to the second team and 14 to the first team. Fifty-seven were also named Honorable Mention. A full list of the honorees can be found at avca.org.

And, congrats are also in order to a couple other Buffs who, in addition to being keys on the court, were also (I'm sure with many others) doing great work in the classroom!

Jordan, Neal Named to CSC Academic All-District Team

By: Malala Pyle, Assistant Director of Athletic Communication

GREENWOOD, Ind. –
Colorado volleyball junior pin attacker Sydney Jordan (Missouri City, Texas) and junior defensive specialist/libero Peyton Neal (Nolensville, Tenn.) were named to the 2025 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team, CSC announced on Tuesday, Dec. 16.

The 2025 Academic All-District Volleyball teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. All-District honorees must have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or greater at the time of nomination, and they are required to have competed in 90 percent of matches or have started in at least 66 percent of total matches. Academic All-District honorees were also considered for advancement to the CSC Academic All-America ballot.

Jordan and Neal selections mark the fourth year in a row that Colorado volleyball athletes have been named to the CSC Academic All-District Team – with Jordan and Avery Bolles (Andover, Minn.) selected in 2024, Maya Tabron, Morgan Riddle and Emma Torstenson in 2023, and Meegan Hart and Sterling Parker in 2022.

Jordan, majoring in Marketing in the CU Leeds School of Business, started in all 31 matches in the 2025 season. She was second on the team for total kills, finishing the season with 281 and averaging 2.42 kills per set. As a six-rotation player, she was second on the team in digs, ending the 2025 season with 271 total, averaging 2.34 digs per set and recording double-digit digs eight times. Jordan matched a career-high 18 kills and reached a career-high in digs with 18 vs. UCF on Oct. 2. She also recorded six double-doubles in the 2025 season.

Neal, majoring in Psychology, played in 28 matches for the Buffs in the 2025 season. Third in the team for total digs, Neal recorded 214 digs and averaged 2.10 digs per set. In addition to digs, she tallied 33 assists and 13 aces for Colorado. Neal saw double-digit digs in 10 matches during the 2025 season. Against Texas Tech, Neal recorded a season-high 13 digs (Oct. 22).

Ana is such a talented player. Hope to see pictures of her and Jesse at the ceremony tonight.

I quite enjoy that $5 million didn't buy the Fuskers a national championship.

Congrats Buffs on a season well done. So far, have not seen any Buffs in the portal.

In the Boulder Daily Camera article yesterday, Jesse said that after his post season meetings, he doesn't expect any of his players to enter the portal. Their goal is to go farther than they did this season.

He also said he told them that means a tougher non-conference schedule as they have to play teams that will challenge them.

I follow someone on Twitter who has a link to the names in the portal and no player from CU is listed.

I saw that. The AD needs to give those 2 programs some $$$ to get better players as well as to make things better at Coors.

I don't think the VB team has ever drawn that many fans for a season

yeah. I think 4k is more reasonable for volleyball and you are right about the support and game day atmosphere. It is pretty stale in the keg

The best in game thing they did was the t-shirt serving game for kids. Suddenly that stopped. RG probably thought the shirts were too expensive.

they had it after the game at least a couple of times. I dont know if it was a every game thing. It seems like the the time between sets was shortened but it was always fun watching it

Yes - there was a NCAA rule change around 2018 or 2019 that decreased the break between the 2nd to 3rd sets from a maximum 10 minutes to a maximum 5 minutes, and that was when the serving promotion went away, at least during the match.

I hope they do it after the match. Except only the participants would be a part of it. The fans would be leaving.

It was fun to see little kids get excited when they hit the t-shirt. Sometimes the cheerleaders would move the shirt for the littles.

I loved it, especially watching the little kids do it. from the photos it seemed to be the students participating after the match. They need to have something though. that game day needs to be spiced up

I have seen many sleeping little the kids by the end of 3 sets. There would be more sleepy ones after each set.

Per the below, looks like the team may have begun its off-season training period. (And, from a couple of the players tagged, looks like the anticipated early enrollees (per the signing article in cubuffs), setter Elle Richardson and middle blocker Kensley Hennessy, ARE in Boulder to start their college years.)

Colorado Volleyball Announces 2026 Spring Schedule

The Buffs will scrimmage five opponents in March and April

By: Malala Pyle, Assistant Director of Athletic Communication

BOULDER –
The Colorado volleyball team revealed its 2026 spring volleyball schedule, head coach Jesse Mahoney announced on Wednesday, Feb. 18.

The Buffs have five scrimmages spread across three dates in March and April. All four of the five matches will be against schools in the state of Colorado, making for convenient but tough off-season competition.

"Spring is such an important time for our program," Coach Mahoney said. "It's when we get to slow things down, focus on development, and really invest in our culture. This spring schedule gives our team the opportunity to compete, grow and continue building toward the standard we expect at Colorado. We're excited to get back in the gym and can't wait to have Buff fans back with us this spring."

CU's first spring ball match will be at Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colo., on Mar. 28 at 11 a.m. MT, followed by a scrimmage with Wyoming at 12:30 p.m. MT. The Buffs will also host a match against Colorado State at CU Events Center on April 4 at 11 a.m. MT. The Black and Gold will meet the Rams again in Fort Collins two weekends later on April 18 at 11 a.m. MT, where they will also scrimmage Denver following that match. Time for the Denver match will be announced at a later date.

Fans will be able to attend the scrimmage against Colorado State at CUEC on April 4 at 11 a.m. MT and can view the full spring schedule here.

The Buffs' last match against the Hoosiers marked the 12th second-round appearance in program history. Colorado had 20 wins this season, marking the program's 13th 20-win season and its first since 2022. With 23 wins this past season, this is the most in a season since 2017 and ties for the third-most wins in a season in program history.
