SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Several University of Colorado track and field athletes, past and present, students and coaches, recorded solid performances here Friday on the third day of the USA Track & Field National Championships.
In the men’s 5,000-meter run final that closed the day’s events (well into the evening), CU senior Joe Bosshard polished off his Buff career with an outstanding seventh place finish in 13:38.19. It was the best time by a Colorado runner in the 5K this spring and the fastest by a Buff since Bosshard ran a 13:34.44 in the NCAA prelims as a sophomore in 2011. Bernard Lagat, who will turn 40 in December, defended his title in the event with a 13:31.41 time, almost a minute and 15 seconds faster than his winning effort in 2013.
“I am really happy for Joe,” CU head coach Mark Wetmore said. “With all the interruptions he’s had in his career, and even this spring – just five weeks ago he ran a 14:04 in his first 5k of the year (at the Payton Jordan Invitational). So for him to run his third fastest time ever in a really talented field was just great to witness. These are some of the best runners in the world.”
