ERIE — The University of Colorado men’s golf team was on a roll Monday in its own Fifth Annual Mark Simpson-CU Invitational and appeared that it couldn’t be stopped – until mother nature dealt her hand in the afternoon.
The Buffaloes owned a six stroke lead after the first round, and expanded to eight early in the second when play was suspended due to rain and lightning. Action resumed briefly, but the bad weather returned and play was called off for the day. The tournament has been shortened to 36 holes, as the 17 competing schools all have somewhere between 10 and 13 holes left to complete.
Colorado, ranked No. 20, had a 12-under 276 team total for round one, which was good for a six-shot lead over Missouri-Kansas City; Denver was third (284) with Houston Baptist and San Diego tied for fourth (287). When play was called for the day, the Buffs were 15-under par with their five scorers having 10 or 11 holes to play. UMKC was 8-under, with DU 4-under and SDSU at 3-under; no other school was under par.
