BOULDER - Despite cool and breezy conditions Saturday, the University of Colorado track and field team started off its outdoor season with several wins at the Jerry Quiller Classic at Potts Field.

"I think we had a pretty good opener within the conditions and we are set up nice for things to come this season," head coach Mark Wetmore said.

In the distance events, Pierce Murphy and Ammar Moussa won their respective events. Murphy took home the title in the 3,000-meter run. He was the only racer to finish in less than 8:40, doing so in 8:35.56. He was able to hold off a surge by Air Force's Elliot Myers who ended up second in 8:40.84. Moussa won the 1,500 in 3:58.75. He finished 1.24 seconds ahead of Kirk Harvey (Metro State), who recorded a time of 4:00.01.

Carrie Verdon also performed well to win the 3k on the women's side, crossing in 9:49.77. Verdon did not race in a CU uniform though since she is leaving in a couple of days to compete at the IAAF World Junior Cross Country Championships in Poland. Allie McLaughlin suited up for her first-ever outdoor race for the Buffs in the 3k and finished fourth overall in 10:12.00.

"At this elevation and slightly cool conditions, I'd have to say that we are happy with some of the distance events," Wetmore said. "Pierce and Ammar both had good wins. Carrie looked good and this shows that she is pretty fit and ready for the world championships next weekend. I was also glad to see Allie not too far behind her."

The sprinters also had a nice day. Eileen Gehring took home the top honors in the 200, crossing the finish in 24.33. Teammate Lindsy Mattson placed second in the same event (24.91) and Bridget Sweeney was third (25.69). Bri Beemer finished first in the 400-meter hurdles (1:01.65). She was a full three second in front of volunteer assistant coach Emily Pearson (1:04.86).

"Eileen had a very nice 200 and Lindsy was just a couple hundredths off of her PR," Wetmore said. "Again, these were not optimal conditions for sprinting, so coach (Drew) Morano's women looked really good. Bri ran within a couple tenths of a second of what she ran at the second home meet last year, so she looks on pace to dip below 59 seconds later in the season and compete at the NCAAs."

In the field events, Mark Jones had the top finish of the day when he placed first in the high jump after clearing 6-08.75. Jones cleared the first two heights on the first attempt before missing all three tries at 6-10.75.

"High jumpers need it 80 and perfect conditions; so was a difficult day today, but a win is a win," Wetmore said. "I'm sure he will be back above seven feet after we have four weeks of warm weather."

But the top performance of the weekend happened on Friday afternoon when Emily Hunsucker took home the top honors in the hammer throw with a personal best mark of 195-10.25.

"The best performance of the weekend would certainly be Emily Hunsucker in the hammer throw yesterday," Wetmore said. "For March that is a very good throw and I'm sure she will continue to improve on that as the season continues."

Assistant coach Casey Malone also got into the win column on Saturday with a victory in the discus throw. He recorded a toss of 186-7.25 in his sixth attempt of the day.

The Buffs will be back in action in two weeks with a pair of meets on the schedule. Many of the distance runners will head west to compete at the Stanford Invitational March 29-30, while the rest of the team will compete at the Fum McGraw Quadrangular on March 30 in Fort Collins, Colo.
