OJAI, Calif. – The “Conference of Champions” proved its name on Thursday as three University of Colorado tennis players fought, but fell in the Round of 32 singles draw in the Pac-12 Conference Championships.

The conference currently boasts eight ranked teams, and the Buffaloes in the championship draw faced two nationally ranked opponents. In individual play, sophomore Ashley Tiefel earned her first victory over a conference opponent.

“Overall as a group, we competed well today, but we didn’t take full advantage of some the opportunities we were given,” CU head coach Nicole Kenneally said. “The good thing is we have more matches tomorrow, and we look to capitalize further than we did today. This is a great location with great weather, and we’re enjoying our experience.”

Winde Janssens faced a rematch against No. 29 nationally ranked, No. 6 seed Kristie Ahn, whom she fell to 6-0, 6-0 during the regular season. The 2011 Pac-12 Individual Champion from Stanford once again proved too much for Janssens, who fell 6-1, 7-6 (4). Taking on No. 40 nationally ranked and No. 8 seeded Kyle McPhillips of UCLA, Julyette Steur battled in a close first set, but fell 7-5, 6-0. Dhany Quevedo rounded out the championship group. In her first postseason appearance, Quevedo lost 6-4, 6-1 to Washington State’s Grace Sari Ysidora.

In invitational play, Ashley Tiefel came out victorious in the Round of 64, while Carla Manzi Tenorio and Mazy Watrous both suffered defeats. Against Stanford’s Natalie Dillon, Manzi Tenorio fell 6-1, 6-0. Washington’s Riko Shimizu defeated Watrous 6-3, 6-3, tying the most games the young Buff has won against a conference opponent.

Tiefel moved out of the first round with a resounding 6-1, 6-3 win over California’s Laura Posylkin for her first victory against a Pac-12 opponent. Tiefel faced a bigger challenge in the round of 32, in a battle against Oregon’s Julia Metzger, where she fell 6-1, 7-6 (5).

“I’m happy for her that she got that win,” Kenneally said of Tiefel’s victory in the Round of 64. “She had some opportunities in second match as well, but she just couldn’t capitalize on them.”

After a first round bye, Erin Sanders faced a rematch against Arizona State’s Stephanie Vlad (the No. 5 seed of the individual draw). In one of her final matches as a Buff, Sanders fell 6-3, 6-2.

The Pac-12 Championships are being held in conjunction with the 113th Annual Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club. The conference tournament consists of a 32-singles championship draw with three players from each of the top 10 Pac-12 schools and two players from the 11th place team, based on regular season standings (where the Buffs tied for eighth). Southern California claimed the team title with a 9-0 regular season conference record.

Play continues tomorrow with singles quarterfinals and the first two rounds of the doubles competition. The 16-team women’s doubles championship draw will have one doubles team from each of the 11 schools and five additional teams selected by the Draw Committee.

Steur/Sanders will represent the Buffs in the championship draw, facing California’s No. 45-ranked Fabikova/Susanyi. Fabikova/Susanyi were ranked No. 20 during the regular season when they defeated Janssens/Manzi Tenorio 8-3. In the invitational draw, Janssens/Manzi Tenorio will face Duranteau/Posylkin of California and Quevedo/Watrous will have a rematch against Washington State’s Leenknecht/Luzina, who took down the pair of Buffs 8-4 in the regular season.
