COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado tennis team fought, but came just short of victory at the United States Air Force Academy on Sunday.

An early 2-0 lead helped the Falcons to a narrow 4-3 win. In 14 meetings, the Buffs have fallen just once.

Junior Winde Janssens was superb in two matches. An early 3-2 break helped Janssens and Carla Manzi Tenorio to an 8-2 win, their fourth as a pair. Janssens then put the Buffs on the board with a solid 6-3, 6-2 solo outing.

Sophomore Julyette Steur also had a strong performance. Though falling 8-5 in doubles with Erin Sanders, she came from behind in singles to claim a victory in three sets, 1-6, 6-0, 6-2. It marked the second time Steur came from behind to earn a win.

Ashley Tiefel closed the day with an intense three set victory. After taking the first set 6-4, the sophomore dropped the next 2-6, but grinded out a 10-8 super tie breaker final set to claim the win. Tiefel is now an impressive 4-0 in three set matches.

Dhany Quevedo battled in her fourth appearance as a Buff. Her singles match was sent to a third set tie-break that ended in a tight 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (5) defeat. She and fellow freshman Mazy Watrous also showed strength in an 8-6 doubles loss. "Obviously it would have been great to start off with a win, but Air Force had a solid match," CU head coach Nicole Kenneally said. "It's one of those things where this is not way you want to start, but it provides us with the opportunity to make the choice of what kind of team we want to be. We've established ourselves as a team of resiliency. We look forward to getting back to the practice courts on Tuesday, to our matches next weekend and to returning to full strength." The Buffs open home play next weekend against Northern Colorado on Friday, Feb. 1 (noon) and Stephen F. Austin on Saturday, Feb. 2 (11 a.m.). Both matches will be played at the Millennium Hotel Harvest House bubble.
