| VALENCIA, Calif.—Junior Jenny Coleman shot the best postseason round in school history and is in contention for medalist honors, propelling the Buffs into sole possession of ninth place here Tuesday at the 2013 Pac-12 Championships. Coleman’s 67 helped the Buffs shave 13 strokes off their first-round score by shooting a 10-over par 298 and are 33-over par 609 through two rounds. Top-ranked Southern California continues to lead, owning an 11-stroke lead over the field at 5-under par 571 on the par 72, 6,300-yard Valencia Country Club course. Host and 10th-ranked UCLA sits second at 6-over par 582. No. 11 Washington sits in third place at 8-over par 584 while No. 5 Arizona had the best second round score to move from sixth to fourth at 9-over par 585 and no. 12 Arizona State rounds out the top five at 14-over par 590. The Pac-12 features six of the top 15 teams in the latest Golfstat rankings. “Overall we were much improved, and that was great to see,” CU coach Anne Kelly said. “Unfortunately we didn’t have a fourth score to count. Jenny really played a great round, it was really fun to watch her today. As she has at times this year, she really played like a tour pro today.” Coleman shot a 5-under par 67 and moved all the way from a tie for 18th into a tie for third at 3-under par 141, just one stroke behind the co-leaders through 36 holes. Starting off on No. 10, Coleman bogeyed her second hole but then caught fire, pouring in seven birdies over the next 11 holes to at one point reach 6-under par. After a bogey on No. 6, she pared out the final three holes for her 67. Her 67 is the best postseason round in CU history and just the fourth round in the 60s in CU’s postseason history and she owns two of those four rounds. The 67 is her career best round and her 5-under par round ties her career best, matching a 68 she shot on a par 73 at the New Mexico Invitational last fall. Overall, the 67 matches the third-best round in school history, just one off the record of 66 accomplished once each by both Emily Talley and Jessica Wallace. She becomes the first player in school history to go 5-under par in a round twice. It’s her fourth career round in the 60s, matching Wallace for the second-most in CU history, behind only Talley’s seven. In CU’s conference history, it is just the second round in the 60s and her 36-hole score of 141 is the best 36-hole score in CU’s conference history and postseason history, topping Wallace’s mark of 143. Overall her 141 is the ninth-best 36-hole score in CU history. Her seven birdies is the fourth most in program history for a round and the most in a postseason round. Freshman Jamie Oleksiew improved her first round 83 by nine strokes, shooting a second round 2-over par 74 with four bogeys and two birdies on her round She moved up nine spots in the standings and is tied for 46th at 13-over par 157. She was even par through 13 holes before a pair of bogeys put her at 2-over with three holes remaining and she pared out. Freshman Allie Zech had a solid round of 3-over par 75 with five bogeys and two birdies in her second round and she is tied for 36th at 9-over par 153. She bogeyed her first hole, No. 10, and then had seven straight pars before a bogey on No. 17 and par on No. 18 put her at 2-over on her front nine, the back nine of the course. She then had her other three bogeys to go to 5-over par through 15 holes before she birdied two of the final three holes of her round to bring it back to a 75. “Allie and Jamie both really made good comebacks after a rough start yesterday,” Kelly said. “I was really encouraged by their play. Now I’m looking forward to Alexis (Keating) and Kristin (Coleman) jumping in there tomorrow and having a good round, as well.” Keating shot a 10-over par 82 and is tied for 50th at 16-over par 160 while Kristin Coleman shot an 11-over par 83 in the second round and is in 54th place at 20-over par 164 through two rounds. Southern California’s Annie Park and Stanford’s Mariah Stackhouse are the only two players ahead of Jenny Coleman entering the final round, both tied at 4-under par 140. The Trojans’ Sophia Popov is tied with Jenny Coleman at 3-under par 141 while Arizona State’s Laura Bianco rounds out the top five at 2-under par 142. The final round of the Pac-12 Championships will commence Wednesday with the Buffs teeing off on No. 10 between 9:40 and 10:12 a.m. MT.
