This is the year the Buffs have been waiting for, the year they’ve been building for, the year that will quite possibly determine whether Mike MacIntyre’s long and difficult rebuilding project will take hold.

With 18 returning starters, Colorado should have the experience and depth to compete with the mid- and lower-level teams in the Pac-12.

But to make it work, the Buffs need good health, they need to win close games, and they need sound quarterback play from the now-healthy Sefo Liufau.

    Coach: Mike MacIntyre
    Season: Fourth
    Record: 10-27
    Win totals by season: 4-2-4
    Job security: Fragile.
Notable: The Buffs have played 45 conference games since joining the Pac-12, and lost 40 of them.

    Here we go …

Sept. 2: vs. Colorado State (Friday in Denver)
    Result: Win
    Record: 1-0
Comment: Buffs make it two in a row over CSU with impressive showing.

    Sept. 10: vs. Idaho State
    Result: Win
    Record: 2-0
Comment: First 2-0 start since ’13. Get the starters out early to rest up …

    Sept. 17: at Michigan
    Result: Loss
    Record: 2-1
Comment: Let’s be reasonable: If Buffs depart Ann Arbor with their key players healthy, it’s been a successful experience.

    Sept. 24: at Oregon
    Result: Loss
    Record: 2-2/0-1
Comment: As back-to-backs go, this is as tough as it gets for any Pac-12 team this season.

    Oct. 1: vs. Oregon State
    Result: Win
    Record: 3-2/ 1-1
Comment: CU point differential vs. the Beavers in MacIntyre’s three years: -27, -5, +4. The trend continues.

    Oct. 8: at USC
    Result: Loss
    Record: 3-3/1-2
Comment: Always a chance to catch the Trojans snoozing, which makes me think this could be closer than expected.

    Oct. 15: vs. Arizona State
    Result: Loss
    Record: 3-4/1-3
Comment: Buffs let one get away against a team that, by mid-season, it will be clear they should beat.

    Oct. 22: at Stanford
    Result: Loss
    Record: 3-5/1-4
Comment: Yes, the road schedule is brutal.

    Oct. 29: Bye
Comment: Desperately needed, but not a true bye with the upcoming Thursday game.

    Nov. 3: vs. UCLA (Thursday)
    Result: Loss
    Record: 3-6/1-5
Comment: Facing a ranked opponent at home under the lights, CU handles itself well … and watches Josh Rosen win it late.

    Nov. 12: at Arizona
    Result: Loss
    Record: 3-7/1-6
Comment: Seriously considered giving the Buffs a win here and … as I type this … having second thoughts about final decision. Last two matchups have been close.

    Nov. 19: vs. Washington State
    Result: Win
    Record: 4-7/2-6
Comment: Just as they lost a game they should have won (ASU), so will the Buffs win a game they should lose. WSU caught looking ahead to Apple Cup.

    Nov. 26: vs. Utah
    Result: Win
    Record: 5-7/3-6
Comment: Utes will be out of the division race and vulnerable as MacIntyre gives the CU administration reason to bring him back for Year Five.

    Coming next: Utah.

5-7 while losing to both AZ schools at home would lead me to drink (more).

Let's be honest; if we go undefeated there will be a lot of drinking. Just cause.
