Color me skeptical.

The recruiting aspect bothers me about JE (and EB). If you are leaving the NFL, then you have not been spending much time studying high school talent, selling parents, and developing relationships within the ranks of high school coaches.

It could take some time for JE to put a staff in place and roll out a recruiting machine. Unless Cabral, Keisau, Hagan and/or some other Hawkins era coaches are retained, then JE might be starting from scratch.

A green NCAA HC fresh out of the NFL will most certainly show in this 2011 recruiting class. (Bottom half) It's not like JE has existing relationships with recruits who will be following JE over from the 'skins. I'm not sure if JE is up to speed on the NCAA rules and calendars. JE will be on a steep learning curve. The new HC is a project who will be expected to do some serious on the job training.

None of these critisms indicate that JE won't eventually recruit lights out. It's just that all of the conference rivals have a huge lead out of the starting gate.

My expectation is that the school will give JE five years to proove himself. If we are lucky, this will turn out more like Paul Rhodes at ISU instead of Ron Prince at Kjuco.

A big part of JE's success will depend upon fan patience. After five years of losing seasons, fan patience is worn out.

I wish JE all the best in his new roll as CUHC. The players deserve every chance to be part of a competitive team. JE has his work cut out for him. I'll join arms and support him in these pursuits. (Thank goodness for an amazing schedule that will keep the Buffs on TV.). But I'm not holding my breath for a bowl invitation next season.

I look forward to his official coming out party. There's every reason to be skeptical. Notwithstanding his bio, JE is a blank slate to me. I'm prepared to be wow'd. Let's hope that happens before 2015.

Why wouldn't your argument hold true for EB as well?

Well, I've been listening to CJ with former players Marquez, Beck, and Graham and I'm pumped. If he's good enough for them, he's good enough for me. Marquez was pretty funny. He said he'd liken Embree to a Huxtable. He can put on the funny sweater and wow a kid from Cherry Creek just as easily as he can go into the inner city and wow a kid from, say, Compton.

 that was a funny comparison.

Seriously, you thought any of them were going to rip Embree? I mean come on lets get serious.

We didn't hire the guy you wanted, so obviously all the former players are liars now for saying that he's going to be good??

Of course not. But I also like what I'm hearing about him. If you keep hearing the same things from different people, wouldn't you say there must be some truth to it? His former teamates and players are saying it. His former coaches and employers are saying it. Sports writers and radio guys are saying it. Joe Williams, who knows him, is telling callers "you will be impressed." So, all that I'm saying, as a guy who doesn't know jack **** about him, is that I like what I'm hearing. I also heard today that he turned down the OC position at Oregon for family reasons and he turned down the OC position for the Buffalo Bills because he felt like he could learn more from Mike Shannahan. Now, I'm sure you will turn those two things into some sort of negative. Point is that he is highly regarded in the coaching community and he has his priorities straight.

I guess recruiting is one thing I am not worried about.. Embree was recruiting HS players just a few years ago and is know by HS coaches in the SoCal area. He has always been an excellent recruiter. If fans are expecting miracles in this years class then forget it. CU needs to pull in some of the players who are interested in the school despite all of the uncertainly. This is not going to be a top 25 class.

I'm just hoping for a couple surprises and a ranking closer to 30 than 60.

Closer to 30?!?! You are an optimist.

Getting into the top 60 can't even be taken for granted.

Here's a question....

Assume Jon Embree is head coach, and Eric Bieniemy is the offensive coordinator. 2 years from now, Bieniemy leaves to take the job at UCLA or USC.
Are you upset / concerned?

Would you be more upset (under the above two scenarios) to lose Embree? or to lose Bieniemy?

No one has enough information to intelligently answer this question, so I have to question the question. Do we have a 75% winning percentage? Is it obvious one or the other is responsible and it will all fall apart if he leaves? Finally, why wouldn't you be happy for a guy to get a promotion to a head coaching position? Are you happily stagnant in your profession?

Unless you're fatbuff saying he will now keep his money in his pocket, or snowbuff saying he wont wait for on field results instead he will see the staff. This type of **** is what pisses me off and why CU fans get a bad rap. I understand any hire is not gonna make everybody happy. But I will always support someone new until they prove they cant do it.

ha

I think this hire makes the University look desperate. I am tired of being the punchline of a joke and the laughingstock of the football world. I hope I am proved wrong. Already getting razzed about cheering for an intramural team. So happy.

I am skeptical that we couldn't have done better finding our top man, although I will be behind Embree when the 2011 starts. Considering how mediocre a HC needs to perform under AD Mike Bohn to receive an extension, and how bad things need to become - before you're fired. You think it would be a relatively cherry job, considering who your boss will be. Hopefully the school gives him a 3 year deal, and their departure is a package deal if things don't improve on the field.

My $0.02 on the hire:

I'm cautiously optimistic about the chances of Embree and EB being able to right the ship. It's only my hunch (no inside "source") that Bohn et al believe that the JE/EB duo really could make things happen, but that JE may offer more "long term stability" as the HC. Hypothetically, if EB were the HC and turned the program around, he really would become THE hot commodity and no way would CU win a bidding war against a big time program or an NFL team down the road. Of course, in this scenario, if JE were the OC, I'd think he'd be primed for the HC spot if EB moved on, making for a more seamless transition, which I don't see any problem with. But (hypothetically again) if JE and EB had the same level of success as the HC, CU feels JE is the guy that would be here for 10, 15 years, where EB may be more likely to move on to greener (read: $$$) pastures.

IMHO, I think Bohn and the SC know that neither EB nor JE by themselves have whole package needed to give program the shot it needs to turn things around. I suspect that the SC and Bohn also know that EB and JE complement each other's strengths and weaknesses quite nicely and if the AD could get both on the staff it would really cover all the gaps necessary to return the program back to where it should be. My guess as to why they haven't made an announcement about JE as the new HC is because they are currently way to busy to worry about a presser when they are trying to close on EB and make the coaching package complete. I wouldn't be surprised if EB gets the title of Assistant HC and OC out of this deal.

I think the reason why they chose JE over EB for HC is that I have a feeling that JE is a little more palatable from a PR perspective. His demeanor is an easier sell to the media as the face of CU football than the more fiery but occasionally ebrasive EB.

Either way, the bottom line for me is that I would feel much better with both on the staff than just EB or JE by themselves. Maybe in this case two heads are better than one...

Makes sense to me.

Of course I'm upset and concerned if one of our key coaches and best recruiters takes the top job at one of our 2 biggest recruiting competitors and a Pac-12 South rival.

It would be equal to me. Either one means that we'd been really successful, though. Better to lose the OC than the HC. Let's hope that neither leaves for the enemy.

If EB had not left GB for the same job at UCLA EB might actually have become HC T years ago. I expect him to leave if he even comes at all.

Then be a man and stand up for your team. We are about to be led by two great buffs who care about this university. Like I said, if you feel embarrased, fine go find a different team.
