A reader brought up needing a master list of head coaching names being floated out there as well as a place to comment. We can add names as we hear them and discuss what is going on with each of them. It will be in the fan post section on top so it will be our place to comment on all the "rumors".
Hopefully, a head coach and assistant coaches will be named soon to take advantage the recruiting contact period that begins today, November 28th. This is a period where coaches can hit the road and recruit in person, something that is very important.
It has been rumored that Bill McCartney has already interviewed for the job. The Boulder Daily Camera has confirmed that former Buffs' Eric Bieniemy and Jon Embree were interviewed for the job or some job on the coaching staff this past weekend (November 27th) in Washington D.C. before the Minnesota Vikings took on the Washington Redskins.
Many view Eric Bieniemy as the leader in the clubhouse for the job right now but many names continue to float around.
Here is the list that we know about:
MOST REALISTIC
1) Bill McCartney - former Colorado Buffalo head coach. From Cubuffs.com:
"Mac" was 93-55-5 in 13 seasons at the reins of the Buffaloes, guiding the program to its first national championship in football in 1990 and to more bowl games, nine, than any before him. He coached Colorado to three Big Eight titles, 10 consecutive winning seasons in league competition and a 58-29-4 mark in conference play, all of which remain school bests.2) Eric Bieniemy - former University of Colorado football player, current running backs and assistant coach for the Minnesota Vikings. Entering his 5th season coaching the Vikings RBs, Eric Bieniemy has overseen one of the most productive units in the NFL in that span. The consistency of the Vikings backs have been a key element in the team winning consecutive NFC North titles.
Bieniemy landed his 1st NFL coaching position with the Vikings in 2006 and has responded by guiding a 1,000-yard rusher in all 4 seasons with Minnesota and helping Vikings RBs break the 100-yard mark 26 times in 64 regular season games.
3) Jon Embree - former University of Colorado football player, current tight ends coach for the Washington Redskins. From Redskins.com:
Embree, who served as the Kansas City Chiefs tight ends coach from 2006-08, joins Washington with 17 years of coaching experience at the NFL and college level.
While in Kansas City, he worked with All-Pro tight end Tony Gonzalez, who made the Pro Bowl each year during Embree’s tenure. In 2007, Gonzalez led all NFL tight ends with 99 catches for 1,172 yards, accounting for 38.6 percent of the club’s receiving yards and 37.3 percent of the club’s receptions that season.
Prior to his stint in Kansas City, Embree served as assistant head coach/tight ends and passing game coordinator (2004-05) and assistant head coach/wide receivers (2003) at UCLA.
4) Troy Calhoun - current Air Force Head Coach
Has had four winning seasons since taking over at Air Force four years ago. A 33-18 overall record and four bowl appearances. Before joining Air Force, Calhoun was an assistant coach for the Denver Broncos and the offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans.
5) Brian Cabral - current Colorado Buffaloes interim head coach, before being named interim head coach, he was assistant head coach/linebacker coach. From cubuffs.com
Has spent 21 years a full time defensive assistant at the University of Colorado. Known as one of the top linebacker coaches in the nation, his students have included Matt Russell, the 1996 Butkus Award winner, all-Big Eight performers Greg Biekert, Chad Brown and Ted Johnson, all of whom went on to stardom in the National Football League, and all-Big 12 linebacker Jordon Dizon, a consensus All-American who was also the league defensive player of the year for 2007. He also recruited tailback Rashaan Salaam, the 1994 Heisman trophy winner, and Chris Naeole, a 1996 All-American guard.
OTHER NAMES OUT THERE
6) Les Miles - current Louisiana State Head Coach, former Colorado Buffaloes' offensive line coach
Former Colorado Buffaloes' offensive line coach from 1982 - 1986. Is 61-17 as the current LSU coach over six years. Is 4-1 in postseason play. Overall, as a head coach since 2001, Les Miles is 89-38. Before LSU he coached at Oklahoma State. Miles has been quoted as being very fond of Boulder.
Why this probably isn't a valid option? Many reasons, first being why would Miles leave for Colorado with a great job at LSU and why would LSU let Miles leave with a great overall record. Further, could Colorado pay his salary and all of his assistants' salary? Would his assistants like one year contracts? Not likey on both accounts.
7) Mark Richt - current University of Georgia Head Coach
Current Georgia head coach with a 96-33 overall record since 2001. Richt has taken Georgia to a bowl game every year as head coach and has gone an impressive 7-2. Georgia has struggled in 2010, going 6-6 including a loss to the Colorado Buffaloes. Many believe Richt is on the hot seat due to those struggles and could be an option of he is let go from Georgia.
Why this probably isn't a valid option? Hard to believe Georgia would get rid of him considering his record and performance in postseason play. Further, the Buffs would have to put up a lot of cash to get him (which they probably don't have) and if Richt was let go, he would be on many school's short list.
8) Houston Nutt - current Ole Miss Head Coach
Yes, this rumor is out there that Houston Nutt will take the head coaching job at Colorado effective tomorrow (Monday, November 29th). Not buying it but he is on the list.
Is 133-86 as a head coach. Spent that last three years at Ole Miss going 22-16 but just 4-8 this year putting his name on the hot seat. Spent the prior 10 years at Arkansas where he went 75-48.
Why this probably isn't a valid option? Has the Boise State name in his background and has gone 4-8 in 2010. Just would not be well accepted by former Colorado Buffalo players and the fan base.
