BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's tennis team swept the Northern Colorado Bears 7-0 Friday afternoon at the Millennium Hotel Harvest House. The Buffaloes improve to 1-1 in the spring season. CU holds a stellar 30-2 record over the Bears, having swept the regional foe nine times. "I think we came out today ready to play," CU head coach Nicole Keneally said. "We understand how important that doubles point was, and I think we really came out and gave it to them straight from the get go, which is what we're going to have to do." Winde Janssens and Carla Manzi Tenorio prove to be a deadly duo, claiming another impressive win. The tandem took down Walters-West/Hoolahan 8-1, improving their season record together to a perfect 2-0. They have only dropped three games total in their two matches thus far. Ashley Tiefel and Dhany Quevedo teamed up for their first time, but the young pair didn't falter, winning 8-1 over Uhle/ Buchanan. Under new ITA ruling, the Steur/Sanders match ended after CU won the doubles point, with the pair up 7-5. The Buffs had impressive solo showings as well, with all players winning in straight sets. Julette Steur and Winde Janssens continued strong spring showings. With a win over Lizzie Tapia, Steur improves to 7-4 in the 2012-13 season. Janssens had a perfect match, beating Stephanie Catlin 6-0, 6-0. Dhany Quevedo, Carla Manzi Tenorio and Ashley Tiefel all raised their winning percentages on the season with wins. Quevedo improves to 3-2, while Manzi Tenorio and Tiefel improve to 7-5 and 5-4, respectively. Though CU had already claimed the win, Erin Sanders, who returns to singles play after recovering from an illness, ended the day with a vengeance to complete the sweep. After claiming the first set 6-3, Sanders fell behind 5-1 in the second, but won six straight games to earn the victory. "Tomorrow we have a good nationally ranked team coming in and we'll look to take them on," Kenneally said. CU concludes the weekend against No. 62 Stephen F. Austin. Play begins at 11 a.m. at the Millennium Hotel Harvest House. The Buffs hit the road next weekend with travels to instate rivals Denver (Friday, Feb. 8 at 6 p.m.) and Colorado State (Sunday, Feb. 10 at 9 a.m.).
