BOULDER– The University of Colorado women’s golf team travels to the Bay Area this week as the Buffaloes are set to compete in the NCAA West Regional at Stanford Golf Course, May 5-7 in Stanford, Calif.

Senior Alexis Keating, juniors Esther Lee and Natalie Vivaldi, sophomore Brittany Fan and freshmanGillian Vance will compete for the Buffs in the standard five-scoring-four format. All-together, the Buffaloes’ quintet has made a combined eight regional appearances. Keating and Vivaldi will be playing in their third straight while Vance is set to make her NCAA postseason debut.

The Buffaloes, who are making their third straight regional appearance and sixth as a team in program history, are ranked 34/21 (GolfStat/Golfweek) in the latest polls and a No. 9 seed in the region will play alongside Texas Tech and Ohio State in the opening round on the 6291-yard, par 71 course. The first group tees-off from hole No. 1 beginning at 8:30 a.m. MDT.

The 54-hole stroke-play tournament is scheduled for one 18-hole round each of the three days (Thursday – Saturday) with the forecast calling for cloudy skies, temperatures in the mid to high 60s and a chance of rain showers on Friday and Saturday.

The top six teams and three individuals who are not members of those squads from each of the four regions—Bryan Texas, Baton Rouge, La. and Shoal Creek, Ala. being the others will advance to the NCAA Championship Finals, scheduled for May 20-25 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore. Obviously VERY early on, as they're only on or just through the front 9, and some teams haven't even teed off yet, but looks like the Buffs have had at minimum a somewhat rough start, as they're currently just in last place (by just a couple strokes) of the teams that have started. Hope they can turn it around on the back 9!

The Buffs do a VERY good job on the back 9 to keep themselves in the hunt for an NCAA championship bid, shooting +1 in the back 9 at what looks like (just based on the scoring) a pretty tough course. As I write this, as seen below, CU is in 9th, but are also one of the 1st teams to finish, so assume some of the teams still on the course (again just based on overall scoring) may have some bogies in them, so the Buffs will have a good chance of moving up the leaderboard before the day is done.

Way to go and keep it up the next 2 days!

Have moved into a tie for 6th with Wake Forest, 4 strokes back of the 4th place tie.
 
Wheels are coming off today. So far, +11 thru 6-9 with the worst round of any team in the field.
 
Buffs make the turn at +12, and as Buffnik said fell quite a bit back (from a tie for 6th after yesterday's round to solo 14th place as of now). Hopefully, like yesterday, they'll do A LOT better on the back 9.

In addition to the team overall having a tough day so far, the top 2 CU finishers yesterday, who have the most obvious chance to possibly qualify individually for NCAA's if the team doesn't make it, are also having tough days, as Buff #1 Esther Lee is +4 right now for the day, and Brittany Fan is at +3.
 
The Buffs once again have a better 2nd 9, so at least have a chance (with a VERY good final round) to earn an NCAA berth as they're 4 strokes out of 6th place heading into tomorrow's final round.

STANFORD, Calif. – The University of Colorado women’s golf team faced wind and rain here Friday in the second round of the NCAA West Regional at Stanford Golf Course and slipped into a tie for 10th place as they head into the final round on Saturday.

The Buffaloes recorded a 16-over par, 300 team score and are 27-over par for the tournament. Friday was very similar to the opening round on Thursday, where the Buffs played better on the back nine in comparison to the front. CU’s four scoring golfers shot 12-over par through nine holes and finished at 4-over par on the back side. The sixth hole, again proved to be an obstacle as the team shot 5-over par with three bogeys and a double. Despite falling in the standings after its round two performance, Colorado remains in the hunt to continue its season. CU is only four strokes out of sixth place—the position needed to advance to the NCAA Championships.

“Honestly, we didn’t play that badly today,” said Colorado head coach Anne Kelly. “We just didn’t’ have anyone shoot a low round and we didn’t’ take advantage of our opportunities, especially with our putting. They are all trying their hearts out. We just need to putt better, so we’ll make a few adjustments for tomorrow and see what happens.”

Buffs still with a chance at the turn, 3 strokes out of 6th place through 9.

Note- As can be seen below, they did start on their (much stronger so far this Championship) back 9 today. Hopefully they can solve the front 9 today MUCH better than they did the 1st 2 rounds, or they could end up quite a bit back.

Coming to the end of the final round, the Buffs are in a tie for 8th, 1 stroke out of 6th and a trip to Nationals.
 
Buffs still in it as they finish at +32, still 1 stroke behind 2 other teams that still have a few holes to go. In any case, GREAT effort by the Buffs, finally having a good round in the front 9 holes, all while being under the highest pressure of the tournament!

Wake Forest just lost a stroke; they're now tied with the Buffs- WF still with their top 2 golfers showing on the course and yet to report their hole 16-18 scores.
 
UVA dropped a stroke. Buffs in a 3-way tie for 6th, but I think UVA wins the tiebreaker while CU has it over Wake.

Ya think they'll use tiebreakers? (I assumed the "Tiebreaks will be resolved" noted on the leader board might mean they'd go extra holes or something.)

Note- still nervous about Wake, as one of their two golfers still on the course is in 2nd in the individual competition, and is killing it on the back 9 at -3 in the 6 holes reported for her.
 
And as I wrote the above about Wake Forest, looks like their #2 golfer came in with a bogie, so Buffs are now showing one up on them with only Wake's #1 showing on the course.

Note- San Jose State is now tied with Wake and have some holes left, so the Buffs also have to worry about them coming from behind.

Yeah. Wake seems more likely to birdie than UVA at this point.

I have no idea about the tiebreaker vs playoff thing. All I know is I see a red line after UVA that indicates they'd advance. They're the highest seed. Maybe they go by that?

Unfortunately, it looks like UVA just gained 2 strokes. Dammit!
 
Rats- And now Virginia goes 2 up on the Buffs, although all of their golfers need to record scores on holes 16-18, so its not over yet.
 
Looking at the remaining holes for Virginia, looks like 16, a par 5, could be a birdie opportunity, but 17 and, especially, 18 look pretty tough. (Both the Buffs and Wake (so far) are/ ended up +3 on the 18th hole.)
 
Wake Forest ends up one behind the Buffs, so they won't be an issue. (EDIT- Not that it matters, but now Wake shows up as finishing 3 strokes behind the Buffs.) Virginia and (possibly) San Jose State State are now the only barriers who can keep the Buffs from an NCAA Championship berth. (San Jose State did lose a shot, so are now 2 behind the Buffs, with all of their golfers still needing to finish and/ or report scores for their 16th-18th holes.)

UVA's got one golfer putting the entire team on her back at -4 today. Rest of their squad is +5, +6, +7, +8.

Of course, golf often is this way, but interesting it's their #4 golfer whose doing it for them.
 
Virginia's showing as having dropped one stroke with one of their five golfers done, and are now only one up on the Buffs.
 
Virginia's #3 golfer comes in with a bogie. Although it looks like she'll be high finisher of the day so it doesn't directly matter, it DOES mean the 3 golfers remaining on the course scores WILL be the ones that count, and they won't have any margin for error.

(Note- I just browsed it QUICKLY, and like most rules they read rather complex so I EASILY could be missing something, but everything I could find in the rules indicates there would/ might (???) be a playoff if there's a tie. If anyone cares, looked like Appendix A (Pg. #16 of http://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/2015-16_DIWGO_Pre-Champs_Manual_20160104.pdf ) goes over tiebreaker procedures.)
