TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Colorado men’s golf team arrived here late Friday in preparation for this week’s NCAA Southeast/Alabama Regional, looking to get back to the championship finals for the first time in 14 years, as well as to make last year’s disappointment even a further memory.

Colorado, ranked No. 66 in the nation (GolfStat; No. 67 Golfweek) is the No. 11 seed in the field and was the last at-large team selected among the 81 that advanced into regional play when taking into account 15 automatic qualifiers. That was an important program goal for this season, as last year, the Buffaloes stormed out of the gate in the Central Regional with the first round lead only to eventually finish sixth, one spot out of to the NCAA Championship Finals for the first time since 2002.
...

Colorado will tee off at 8:15 a.m. (MDT) Monday off No. 10, with the Buffs paired with Charleston Southern (No. 10 seed) and Harvard (No. 12). The field will be re-paired according to score after the first and second rounds, with all tee times between 7:00 and 9:20 a.m. for the second round (Tuesday) and between 6:30 and 9:04 a.m. for the final round (Wednesday).

Ten individuals from schools that did not advance as a team will also compete in here, thus 75 total players will be in the field. There are six regional sites in all and those competing will play 54 holes with the top five teams and top individual who is not a member of those squads earning the right to advance to the NCAA Championship Finals. Those are scheduled for May 27-June 1 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.

Although not a great looking round, the Buffs have what looks like a solid round, and are in 7th place after the 1st day, 4 strokes behind the 5th (final qualifying) place team. Individually, junior Jeremy Paul is tied for 1st, so obviously had a great round.

Still a few teams on the course, but looks like the Buffs chances of making the Championships took a big hit today, both as a team and individually, as they currently have the 2nd worst round of any team today, and will be ~18 shots behind (final qualifying spot) 5th place going into tomorrow's final round.

Men end up in a tie for 8th, 23 shots behind the Auburn, the final qualifier to the NCAA championships. Since they came in named the 11th seed of the region, not a bad result, but I'm sure they were hoping for more.

Best wishes to the team for an enjoyable summer, and hope they get some great work in.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Colorado men’s golf team turned in its best performance here this week on Wednesday, but couldn’t make up any ground in finishing in a tie for eighth place in the NCAA Southeast/Tuscaloosa Regional.

The Buffaloes registered an even-par 288 score to finish with a 26-over 890 total. CU basically remained in eighth place most of the day, though did move into seventh briefly. But for Colorado to advance to the NCAA Championship Finals, it needed to make up 18 strokes on fifth place as only the top five teams advanced, and that proved next to impossible since the team in that spot – No. 8 Auburn – was practically playing at home.
...
“It was a good final round, all five guys were in it all day which is important to score well,” said CU head coach Roy Edwards. “Wilson finishing out with a 70 was really strong. The course was set up a little bit easier, so the scores were a little lower for the most part, but we still played our best round of the three. We made fewer big numbers and that was obviously a big factor here, along with maybe being a little bit more familiar with the course. But we simply just played better. Yesterday (second round) we were off our game, but today we came back and played a solid round. I was proud with how they responded.”

...

“All in all, the positive is we ended the season on a good note and we played above our seed line (11th), which was good as well and we beat a couple of good teams,” Edwards added. “On the season overall, it was another good year and I’m appreciative of the guys for their efforts and all they put into the year. I expect we’ll pick up some individual honors that will be announced in the next month as well for Philip and Jeremy, and that will be some good recognition for them.”
