CUBuffs.com: Season Preview (AND early results): CU Ski Team Looks to Continue Odd Year Trend

BOULDER – The University of Colorado ski program is set to embark on the 2017 season and returns a cast of nine All-Americans on its roster that seeks to win the schools 21st national championship.

Having won the national title in 2011, 2013 and 2015, the Buffs look to keep the odd-year trend alive in 2017, which will be the 27th under the direction of head coach Richard Rokos.

Only the University of Denver has won more national championships (including co-titles and AIAW) in NCAA skiing history with 23. Despite four top 10 finishes in the Nordic freestyle on the final day of the 2016 NCAA Championships, the Buffs finished second to Denver last year and now CU looks to get back on top with its experienced returnees that will blend in this year with elite newcomers.

For Rokos, the goals and expectations never change.

"It stays that way," Rokos said of his annual goal to win the national championship. "We are in the bracket to make it and why make goals other than the highest one? As long as there is potential, there is no reason to set a lower goal than winning the championship again."

Good luck to the ski team as it starts its season at various places over the next 2-3 days. Go get'um!

Just wanted to mention it looks like the ski team action starts soon TODAY.

Best wishes again to the team!

1) For the Alpine Racers, it looks like live results for today's individual giant slalom qualifiers being hosted by Montana State at Big Sky will be available through http://ussalivetiming.com/ , with the women's 1st runs scheduled to start at 10:00 and men's at 11:00. The Alpine racers will be staying at Big Sky Montana for the "Montana State Invitational", a regular team competition which starts tomorrow with another giant slalom, followed by slalom races Monday.

2) On the Nordic (AKA cross country) side of things, they are in Soldier Hollow UT for the start of a U. of Utah hosted "Utah Invitational". Looks like freestyle races are today, with classical sprints tomorrow. Results for the Nordic races look they may might be available at http://summittiming.com/races/race_results.php once the races are of course completed.

Assume also the ski twitter accounts for the Buffs (https://twitter.com/cubuffsskiing) , as well as hosts Utah (https://twitter.com/utahskiteam) and/ or Montana State (https://twitter.com/@msu_skiteam) will also be providing updates.

Looks like it was a very good start to the year for the Buffs, featuring 2 wins and quite a few Top 10 finishes!

(One MAJOR unanswered question in the article would be WHY Buff Nordic leader and multiple-time NCAA Champ Mads Stroem didn't race. Hopefully either something MILD injury or illness-wise, or just resting up after some other major competitions he's been competing in.?.)

Can't CU obscure that stupid block U that Utah puts on their bibs?

Noticed that too. Almost NASCAR level signage. (Track and field often seems to do the same thing in both college and pros.) To be fair, wanted to mention that, if you look at photos from last year's NCAA championship's, hosted by the Buffs (Here's a sample- http://i.turner.ncaa.com/ncaa/big/2...7582031-ski_recap_1920.jpg-355039.960x540.jpg), the bibs also display CU (and even more so CU colors) pretty prominently.

Also, article on today's action now available. Great to see the Buffs leading in both Invitationals.

Note- in my earlier post, I wondered why Buff star Nordic skier Mads Stroem wasn't skiing. From an Instagram I now found from him (via one of my normal searches, #Gobuffs in this case), he has an "infected appendix". (It must have just come up suddenly, since he tagged his photo in the hospital bed as being at the U. of Utah hospital, and they were hosting this past weekend's races.)

Best wishes to him on having a safe operation, and then a complete and timely recovery.

(For those who don't follow Buff skiing that closely, Mr. Stroem has a chance to go down with one of if not THE most decorated CU collegiate career(s) ever. Now a senior, he's already won 3 individual NCAA national championships (including sweeping both the Classical and Freestyle races last season), and has earned 1st Team All-American status (which requires a Top 5 race finish) in all 6 out of a possible 6 NCAA Championship races he's competed in so far. (This info is from his bio at http://www.cubuffs.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=11148 .))

Article on today's results- http://www.cubuffs.com/news/2017/1/...s-hold-on-to-lead-at-msu-invite.aspx?path=ski.

In short, Buffs keep the lead at the Montana State (MSU) Invitational as the Alpine part of the team finishes their work there. (If I looked at the roster correctly, impressive that 5 of the Buff's top 6 finishers (or top 3 for each gender) are either freshmen or sophomores, and one of their typical top male skiers, another sophomore, skied out in his 1st run.)

And, congrats for the 1st of what hopefully will be many individual victories for frosh David Ketterer.

Next weekend, the Alpine and Nordic skiers flip their Invitationals, with the Alpine folk going to Utah trying to keep the lead the Nordic team earned this past weekend, while the Nordic folk hopefully keep the lead inherited from the Alpine team in Montana.

Article on yesterday's women's giant slalom races. (Can't imagine how little distance a 100th of a second deficit must represent in distance in alpine skiing.)

A train leaves Denver heading towards St Louis at 50 mph per hour. Another train leaves St Louis...

PS - Good to see Trulsrud start the season strong.

Another interesting general article on the ski team, and their prospects for the rest of the season after the 1st 2 Invitationals are complete. Impressive to me that, even with their top returning male Nordic and Alpine skiers out, they've still won both overall point competitions so far.

Looks like the team is up in Alaska for the next/ last invitational (before conference championships), which starts on Thursday. The Alpine skiers are up 1st, competing from this Wednesday through Saturday, and then the Nordic skiers will take over from Feb. 7th-12th.

A couple invitationals going on up in Alaska. Looks like the Buff Alpine team isn't overall having the kind of performances they did in the 1st 2 invitationals of the year, although still a few great individual performances.

1) Seawolf Classic-
Looks like the Buffs moved up to 4th in team points as the slaloms ended up the Alpine part of the Seawolf classic- results at https://www.nmnathletics.com//pdf9/5214647.pdf .

Looks like the men had very solid slalom results-

2) At the UAA (Univ. of Alaska- Anchorage) Invitational, action also started with the slalom, abd the Buffs start in 5th. Results in https://www.nmnathletics.com//pdf9/5215609.pdf . (While the men won the team points, the women had a REALLY rough race, with only 2 racers finishing both runs, with the top one of those only in 16th place.)

Note- After writing the above, see there is a cubuffs article (and a few photos) on the day's races via here -

Congrats to frosh David Ketterer for already tieing the CU season wins record in the slalom with a couple competitions (conference and NCAA championships) still to go!!!

A few of my main takeaways from the article-
1) The sprints are not run often, and aren't part of NCAA's, so the Buffs don't practice them much.
2) 2 of the typical top 3 women were out, one injured and one ill. Hopefully neither are to serious.
3) Great to see Men's assumed #1 racer Mads Stroem racing for I believe the 1st time this season after having appendicitis right before the start of the season. Hopefully he can round into shape before NCAA's, which start a month from tomorrow. Assume 9th place isn't a bad finish 1st time out after injury.
4) A very rare relay for NCAA skiing is up next tomorrow. (I know in track, relays always seem to be a highlight, and most athletes love the team feeling, so assume the Buffs (and of course the other teams) will be psyched for them.)

Looks like another very good day for the Nordic Buffs, especially the women, who get a solid points win behind a 1st time NCAA level-race winner (senior Jessi Knori), finish 1-2 and get 3 in the top 10. (As noted in an earlier post, this is without 2 of their top 3 usual top finishers competing due to injury and illness.) The men finish 3rd in points behind another podium finish from Petter Reistad.

Overall, the Buffs moved up from 5th to 3rd at the Invitational with only the longer freestyle race left tomorrow.

Looks like, as in the other Alaska Invite, the Buffs finish in 3rd at the UAA Invitational.

Direct link to article - http://www.cubuffs.com/news/2017/2/12/skiing-buffs-finish-third-at-uaa-invitational.aspx

"
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Colorado sophomore women's Nordic skier Christian Rolandsen led the Buffaloes with a third-place finish in Sunday's freestyle races, as the Buffs concluded the UAA Invitational with a third place finish at Kincaid Park.

For Rolandsen, it was her second straight podium finish and third overall on the season.

Colorado as a team finished the UAA Invitational in third place with 544 points. Utah won its second-straight meet with 661 points and Denver finished in second with 636.

Sunday's racing was one marked by freezing temperatures, which hovered right around zero degrees, but with the wind chill were between minus 8-11 degrees.
...

The Buffaloes are now off until the RMISA Championships at the end of the month, which are being held at Beaver Creek, Feb. 24-26. The NCAA Championships follow that, March 8-11 in New Hampshire.
