Best wishes to the team as their spring training period begins!

In addition to the above news of the spring schedule, we can also just use this thread for any Buff-related volleyball news that comes up before next season starts getting close.

To start with, wanted to mention that five Buffs are down in Colorado Springs this weekend for the "U.S. Women's National Team Open Tryout". more detail is at http://www.teamusa.org/USA-Volleyba...nal-Team-Open-Tryout-to-Evaluate-244-Athletes, with the tryouts starting this afternoon. (These are the tryouts which, I believe, were part of the basis that last year led to Alexa Smith being selected for a team that played in China, while Gabby Simpson played with a team in Europe.)

CU Buffs article on the tryouts - http://www.cubuffs.com/news/2017/2/27/five-buffs-head-to-usa-volleyball-tryouts.aspx

Info on the Buffs participating in the tryouts this year (jersey color, # and wave time will help any fans who might want to check in and see how any of the Buffs are doing) -

Jersey - Name (School, Position, Friday Wave Time)
B66 - Abu, Naghede (University of Colorado, Middle Blocker, 4pm)
R81 - Joachim, Taylor (University of Colorado, Opposite, 6pm)
W38 - Shebby, Frankie (University of Colorado, Outside Hitter, 2pm)
W52 - Smith, Alexa (University of Colorado, Outside Hitter, 4pm)
W19 - Spann, Justine (University of Colorado, Outside Hitter, 6pm)

A little info on the tryouts from the above link-

Potential opportunities for those selected-
"
The U.S. Collegiate National Team program has three competition options:
  • Tour of Thailand (12 athletes): May 19-30
  • Tour of Europe (12 athletes): July 5-16
  • USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships (projected 36 athletes): June 22-July 1 in Minneapolis
"

When teams will be selected-
"Selections for the U.S. Collegiate National Teams will be made by the end of March. "

This weekend's general schedule-
"
The tryout will involve four sessions with three waves per session. Friday’s first session goes from 2-8 p.m. MT, while Saturday’s sessions are at 8 a.m. (focus on serve/receive and individual work) and 2 p.m. (middle-centered and out-of-system focus). The final session on Sunday begins at 7:30 a.m. MT with tournament style play, along with 16-18 athletes selected by the U.S. Women’s National Team staff to participate in a “USA” training session. The Sunday session wraps up at 10:30 a.m. MT.

Before I forget- a LITTLE info on next year's schedule release-

(Seems like the Pac is always the last conference to finalize and announce its volleyball schedule by MANY weeks. I could make a snide remark that they should "get their act together", but I'd guess the reason it's so slow is having to coordinate Pac 12 Network schedules/ coverage with all the other fall sports. AND, based on how great and comprehensive that vball coverage IS compared to I believe all other conferences (with its 7 network channels and streaming of almost any non-televised conference match), I'll contentedly accept the short delay on schedule announcement.)

First bit of info on CU non-conference VB schedule:

CSU released their schedule and CU will be playing CSU at Fort Collins on 9/16 at 7 PM.

It looks like this might be a 4 team weekend tourney with Albany and Xavier being the other two teams. CSU plays Albany Friday evening and Xavier earlier on Saturday. So maybe CU will be playing Xavier on Friday and Albany in another Saturday timeslot. Last year when CSU played at CU it was also a 4 team tourney and CSU played one of the teams in Fort Collins on Friday and played CU plus the fourth team at Boulder on Saturday. So if they follow the same pattern, the Friday CU game would be in Boulder.

Probably not of interest to (m)any, but wanted to mention, since I'd forgotten and am a fan, that the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship is taking place this weekend in (their seemingly permanent home of) Gulf Shores AL.

I watched some in prior years, and the NCAA (and/ or whoever they contract out to) does a nice job of providing live video streams of all 5 competition courts. Links to those streams-
For tomorrow (coverage starts at noon MT) - http://www.ncaa.com/liveschedule/2017/05/06
For Sunday (starting at 9:00 AM MT) - http://www.ncaa.com/liveschedule/2017/05/07

Live interactive championship bracket - http://www.ncaa.com/interactive-bracket/beach-volleyball/nc/2017

Note- For those who want/ like commentary, maybe more replays, etc., looks like TRU TV is also televising much of the championships, although I assume they can largely only cover a court or two at a time. Check TV listings for more info on that option.

Note 2- Pac 12 participation - There are 2 Pac teams in the Championships, undefeated and HEAVY championship favorite USC, and #2 seed UCLA. In the 1st day of action, USC as expected cruised with wins over #8 South Carolina (the "other" USC) and #5 seed Hawaii. UCLA is 1-1 after beating #7 LSU before losing a squeaker to #3 seed Pepperdine. As can be seen in the above-linked bracket, this isn't a single elimination tournament, so UCLA is still alive, but now in the "win or go home" Elimination Bracket.

Note 3 - For those who like to see stars early on in their careers- at least per the seemingly knowledgeable Volleytalk forum (I don't know enough to be able to judge), the #1 pair for USC, Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes, is considered the next "Big thing" in American volleyball, taking over as the big "Olympic hopefuls" for such players a Kerri Walsh-Jennings, Misty May-Treanor, April Ross, etc. as time goes on.
(In the worthless gossip front for a sport probably none of you care much about- there is a (totally unsubstantiated) rumor on Volleytalk that Ms. Walsh Jennings, now 38, may be trying to get Ms. Hughes, who is a senior, to be her partner in her attempt to make one more Olympics. Ms. Walsh- Jennings just broke up with her partner from the last Olympics Ms. Ross, one of the top players in the world, partially or mostly because the former is in a feud with the major American beach tour (the AVP) over moneys owed to her, and the AVP's requiring a 3 year exclusive contract be signed to compete on their tour.)

Note 4- One thing disliked by most serious beach fans, the NCAA does NOT offer an individual championship bracket/ tournament to go with the team championship. USA Volleyball added a College pairs championship this year to help fill that void, and it will be held next Thursday - Saturday in Hermosa Beach (per http://www.flovolleyball.tv/article...nnounces-collegiate-beach-pairs-championships ). Although better than nothing, one limitation of that tournament is that only U.S. players can play in it, and a few of the top teams are from other countries.

Based on the tweet I inserted into post #5, assume we'll get the full non-conference schedule any day now, but did want to note anyways that Penn State released their schedule today (http://www.gopsusports.com/sports/w-volley/spec-rel/051517aab.html), and it confirms the Buffs are still part of the 4 team Big 10/ Pac 12 challenge, being hosted this year by Illinois. The Nittany Lions' schedule shows them playing the Buffs on Sept. 8th at 2:30 MT, with Illinois, I assume , playing the Buffs the evening of Sept. 9th (based on when PSU plays Stanford).

PSU is considered one of the NCAA Championship favorites this year, and Illinois should at least be decent, so a another good challenge for the Buffs early in the season.

Xavier has released their schedule. It confirms Xavier at Boulder, as I speculated (bolded above).

Just noticed that, per a cubuffs.com article (www.cubuffs.com/news/2017/6/21/volleyball-catching-up-with-nicole-edelman.aspx), 2016 grad Nicole Edelman has signed to play a 2nd year of professional volleyball, with this coming season being with Spanish team Logroño. (Per the same article, She played "with Volleyball Franches Montagnes Club. VFM, located in Saignelégier, Switzerland" last season.)

Congrats to her!

Just based on the population of the countries, I'd guess (???) going to Spain would be considered a "promotion" to a tougher league. And it looks like, per http://www.flashscore.com/volleyball/spain/superliga-women/standings/ (and other tabs accessible from that link) , that Logroño won Spain's Superliga (both regular season and playoffs) last season with an undefeated record.

Article on the new strength and conditioning coach for volleyball (and women's basketball).

Direct link - http://www.cubuffs.com/news/2017/7/...ngler-to-strength-and-conditioning-staff.aspx

"
The Michigan native brings 11 years of experience to the Buffs

Adam Ringler to the strength and conditioning staff is an important one for the future of CU's volleyball and women's basketball programs as he will manage all of the workouts for student-athletes on those two teams.

Ringler was hired in June to replace Chris Sheckler, who stepped down after five years with the CU strength and conditioning staff to accept a similar position with South Metro Fire Rescue.

Both of CU's coaching staffs that work directly with Ringler have been very impressed so far.

"Adam's got great energy and already has a rapport with our players," CU volleyball coach Jesse Mahoney said. "He really knows his stuff and I love that he is not afraid to think out of the box and look for innovative ways to develop our athletes."

"Adam brings tremendous energy and enthusiasm to our weight room," CU women's basketball coach JR Payne said. "We are excited to have someone with his experience and passion join our program to help mold our young ladies into champions both on and off the court."

Ringler brings 11 years of strength and conditioning experience at the NCAA Division I level. He served two years as a volunteer coach at Michigan State before accepting a two-year graduate assistant position in East Lansing. He earned his bachelor's degree from MSU in 2008 in kinesiology and completed his master's degree at MSU in 2010, also in kinesiology. While at MSU, he worked closely with the volleyball team and directly oversaw the strength and conditioning program for the wrestling team that had six NCAA qualifiers and one All-American. He also assisted with 17 Olympic sports programs, along with the men's and women's basketball teams.
