explaining baylor?

Are you saying the Nubs are content with having vaginas?

You know what I am saying. But for you I will spell it out: CU fans don't need to let Baylor get under their skin. Colorado is the better program and the Buffs will kick their ass next time they face them. You can count on it!

What's with all this Baylor envy from many of you lately?

I didn't think Colorado fans would stoop to that.

Baylor is Baylor, that's all there is to say!
I believe you are mistaking envy for hate. But you're correct. We would never stoop to envy. Hate, on the other hand, we have no problem with.

Cheesus, the nub thinks we're jealous because we openly wonder how a school with absolutely zero athletic tradition or history of any kind all of the sudden is one of the most successful in the country? Nobody else is looking at that and saying :wtf: really?

Jealous much?

Baylor is hung like a Miss Canada contestant.

I think they are one of the dirtier programs in the country. They are Kentucky Jr, a mercenary program at work. Probably throw UConn in that mix as well.

It's a Devil's bargain. What WOULD Baylor offer to Louis Cypher in exchange for glory? This was my first inclination.

But it's not rational. Simple case of freemarket working better than socialism.

Baylor is a private school with leadership who are highly motivated to build a top tier athletic department.

As a private school, Baylor is not beholden to voters and socialistic state regulatory red tape.

They are free from AAU certification. They are held in check by the Baptist convention, which hardly has the same dogma as the Catholics. In short, Baylor is more adept at turning on a dime than their state affiliated bretheren.
Do you want to hike tuition? NO problem. Kenneth Starr asks regent Buddy Jones. Is Buddy Jones going to say no?

There is not some cumbersome legislative process with state caps mandated on the percent increase in tuition, or percent out of state students, or percent funding to be contributed by the state. On the contrary, Baylor does not answer to the state, but oddly enough, has alumni who pull the strings in Austin, while being out of the state's jurisdiction.

As a private institution in Texas, with a long relationship of being in UT'S shadow, there is an understanding by Baylor alumni that donations are expected, and come with the diploma.

A Baylor grad is much more likely to give back to the school, as it's just part of their culture. It doesn't hurt that the religious half of the alumni base come from a tradition of giving, and the legal alumni who reside in law firms and courtroom chambers across Texas have the means to donate. Baylor has made a priority of building a $1B foundation endowment over the past decade.

In Colorado, by comparison, the instate alums may percieve donations are not necessary because it's covered by tax dollars, and nobody wants to pay the government more than the bare minimum. The out of state alumni feel cheated by CU for subsidizing the instate peers. All the while, Bruce Benson is handcuffed by political forces, and is not comfortable declaring that NCAA championships are a priority. This is not the case in Waco.

It also doesn't hurt that Baylor is in a recruiting hot bed. It's just down the road from Houston, DFW, and Austin/San Antonio. Kids can get a scholarship worth $25,000+ per year (vs the instate $12,000 at state schools) and you pitch to the parents about the safe religious based environment far from the outrageous decadence and excess found in the big city. Sold.

An other example of a private school doing exceedingly well athletically amidst these tough economic times is Stanford.

Excellent post. They were a pretty good program historically before joining the Big 12 and people have forgotten that. Baylor's rise in football didn't really shock me due to RGIII...he had the numbers in high school and still was a 4* kid because I don't think the big time programs took him seriously. He could have been 5* back then. Will Baylor be able to sustain their success? Time will tell but given their history pre-Big 12, it's doable.

Art Briles is a former big school coach from Texas and will have those connections to Texas high school football coaches so he will be able to recruit to Baylor. He has been successful at many stops and was on Mike Leach's first TT coaching staff back in 1999. He successfully changed Stephenville HS from a wishbone offense to the spread offense that is paramount in Texas high school football these days. Briles can coach and given his background, I'd say that Baylor is his dream job like Tad Boyle's job at CU is his dream job.

Baylor just happens to have a successful coach and there are better days ahead for the Baylor program given that new stadium on the drawing boards.

As for basketball, I think that cheating accusation is getting old. I strongly urge everyone in this board to take ten minutes and look at Baylor's facilities for basketball.

They have a weight training room within their basketball/volleyball arena: http://www.baylorbears.com/facilities/grays.html

From the Ferrell Center's site:

The most recent upgrade to the Ferrell Center is the construction of the Lt. Jack Whetsel Jr. Practice Facility. The 42,990 square-foot addition includes the Hawkins practice courts, the Getterman Office Suites for the coaching staffs, and Gray's Gym, named by R.T. Gray in memory of his son, R.B. Gray. Other improvements include the Hall of Honor entry, the Stone Reception Room VIP area, as well as upgrades to the training room, media room and visiting locker room. The $8 million Whetsel Practice Facility was dedicated on September 8, 2006. Previous upgrades to the Ferrell Center have included: new state-of-the-art locker rooms in 2004; a new hardwood maple playing surface in 2002; and the addition of six new scoreboards and two new 8x10 video replay screens in 2002.

and

The Ferrell Center has been the site of Dallas Mavericks exhibition games, and the facility has also hosted the Mavericks' and Phoenix Suns' training camps. Former President Ronald Reagan spoke to a Republican political rally in the first event held under the golden dome in 1988.

Baylor has made the investments to their athletic programs and it is paying off.

Maybe that is the reason for Baylor envy running like crazy on this board. Be patient CU fans, we are going to eventually exprience the athletic department wide renassiance that Baylor has been expriencing for awhile.

You slackers...go to www.baylorbears.com (not www.baylorfans.com) and look at all their athletic facilities. Most of them have been modernized or newly built in the last decade or so. After they took care of their olympic sports, they were free to focus on basketball and football and that is where Baylor is at these days.

And they are in Texas where there are many high school prospects to choose from.

Again, excellent post by Skidmark.

**** anyone defending Bailor in this thread. Piece of **** fans and school. They will fall into a abyss once again.

What the **** is wrong with you people? **** bailor!

Should Baylor's women's team punch their ticket to the NCAA final four in Denver, there is an excellent heckling opportunity for the "**** Baylor" crowd.

I'm far too lazy to drive to the pepsi center to do that. Can they just come over to my house? Scratch that. Explaining why Brittany Griner is at our house to my gf would be kind of hard.

My thoughts as well...this Baylor envy is getting old. Hopefully being rational about Baylor's successes will allow this thread to die.

There is no envy. It's hate. Why would we be envy of a school full of murderers who haven't won a conference title in football or basketball since the early 80's?

Really? You sure you really want to go with this argument?

Their history suggests they are an average program that has not been able to sustain success. I have no idea whether they will be able to sustain success (Briles is a good coach), but I would not rely on Baylor's history to bolster your argument.

The only hard thing at your house in that situation would be in Brittany's shorts.

Nashbuff... you say weird **** man. Sometimes I wonder about you. Defending Baylor's FOOTBALL history? wow.

I am left to assume that by "pretty good program historically before joining the Big 12," Nash was fixated on that .456 all-time winning percentage in the SWC.

Baylor's recent athletic success simply does not pass the smell test. You don't go from a program shattering scandal to Elite 8 in that short of a time span. Something is fishy. I have no idea what it is, though.

I'm a big fan of Nash's, and I don't want to see him getting beaten up too badly here.

However, I will say this. I'm a deployed servicemember in Afghanistan. Sometimes all that gets me out of bed in the morning is my hate for Baylor. That's it. When things get tough...it's really about Baylor and how much I hate them. Last Fall, when bad guys were coming over the walls with RPGs, and I was in my hard-stand, wondering what would happen next--round in the chamber, ready for anything, I took energy in knowing how much I hate Baylor.

If you can't find it in yourself to hate Baylor, Nash, at least do it for the deployed servicemembers. We're counting on you.

Maybe that last post was a little dramatic. Sorry for that. Nash, you don't have to hate Baylor for all deployed servicemember, but can you find it within you to do it for me?

They cheat.... at least in basketball. If it isn't outright cheating, they operate very deep in the 'gray' area of college recruiting
Same excuse that all losers use - they are smart and know what they are doing.

I think it might be Greg Gagne and Jim Brunzell, aka The Highflyers.

No. That is most definitely NOT Jumpin Jim Brunzel and Greg Gagne. Them I would recognize.

Gagne & Brunzel.

Edit: The guy on the right *could* be Jim Brunzel, but I doubt it. If so, he really changed.
