FootballCoachScoop.com: Hawkins will not be back next season.

But CU would have to pay a coach, whether it is Hawkins or Dave Logan.

So figuring in the money that would have to be used to pay the NEXT coach seems redundant.

depends entirely on what the theoretical new coach is paid relative to hawkins' comp for next season...

the buyout plus any "extra" money on top of what would have been paid to hawk next year = additional money.

Hawkins is fired tommorow.

Come Jan 1 2010 we pay him whatever amount, $850,000 to be the EX head coach at CU for the next year.

Come Jan 1 2010 we also pay the new HC and his staff. $1.5mil is probably too low.

Don't forget were still paying back the Barney and Hawkins (BSU) buyouts though this might be the last year.

Jun 2006: The $8 million will come from university reserves, an approximately $12 million "rainy-day fund" set aside for such problems, interim Chancellor Phil DiStefano said.

The loan will not result in cuts to any other departments or programs, officials said.

The athletic department will pay the money back at a rate of $800,000 per year, plus 2 percent interest, starting in the 2007-08 fiscal year.

Here's how CU's athletic department accumulated $8 million in debt:

• 2004-2005

Regents' decision to delay mandatory season ticket holder "donations": $900,000

• 2005-2006

Shortfall in overestimated ticket sales and donations: $3.3 million

• 2005 buyout of former football coach Gary Barnett's contract: $3.1 million

• 2005 buyout of new coach Dan Hawkins' contract at Boise State: $700,000

Total: $8 million

Keep Hawkins, and we need $850,000 plus amounts to pay his staff. $1.5 million is probably low.

The Barney buyout is on the books either way.

The additional money we need is what we pay Hawkins to go away, and whatever the new staff costs over and above what the current staff is getting. That is the maximum amount that is going to need to come from a source other than the AD budget. The current amount is already accounted for in the football budget, as is the repayment of the Barney buyout.

we have the money. we have the will. all we need now is a HERO!
