Wanted to add that the Stanford game is the 100th in the program's young history, and there's many nice things said about Coach Elliott Whidden and the team in the below article and video. Hope Coach continues to captain and grow the team for MANY MANY more years!

"
BOULDER - When Ann Elliott Whidden took over as the head coach of a brand-new University of Colorado women's lacrosse program in March of 2012, few expected the team to ascend to national prominence in just 100 games.

However, just 100 games into her tenure, Whidden has built Colorado into one of the premier programs in the West. The Buffs have appeared in 31-straight IWLCA Coaches' Polls and made back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament.

Looking back on the 2014 inaugural season, Colorado defied the odds in going 11-8. Whidden acknowledged that turning an upstart program into a perennial top-25 team was a process. "The biggest thing when you're starting to build is, you've got to get coaches and you've got to get players. You want players that are going to believe and buy into what you're trying to create. We had to recruit a lot, and at that time we were behind in recruiting, so it was just about trying to find players that would fit into our style of play, have a little bit of a chip on their shoulder and come out here and buy into what we were doing. There's obviously a million other things like sticks and fields, but coaches, players and establishing that culture is the biggest part."

Whidden's passion in selling a vision for Colorado Lacrosse was infectious and All-American goalkeeper Paige Soenksen recalls being sold right away. "When I think back on why I chose to go to Colorado, I remember the first ever meeting that I had with Ann on my visit. She outlined her vision for the program, spoke about where the program would be in the coming years and clearly defined the hard work and values that it would take to get there. She was so passionate that I bought into her vision for building Colorado lacrosse immediately."
...

Two-time All-American defender and current volunteer assistant coach at North Carolina Sarah Brown recalls leaning on Whidden at various points throughout her career, especially during a difficult 2018 season. "It is truly rare to come across a coach that matches Ann's compassion and work ethic," Brown said. "Not only does she possess these qualities, but she instilled these values into Colorado's program making us all better players and people. As a coach, Ann not only helped my teammates and me through the toughest times in our lives, but she turned our team into a family."

When Whidden reflects on her first 100 games as Colorado's head coach, it's easy to see what Brown means. She doesn't have a favorite win – the wins and losses have always been secondary to Whidden. Rather it's the life-long bonds formed on the lacrosse field that she has always valued the most.

"At the end of the day, it's about the players to me, it's not about the games. It's about seeing these young women once they've graduated and what they're doing in life, their excitement when they get to come back and be around each other. No game is ever going to be as special as that."
"

Buffs have overcome a slightly slow start that had them go down 0-2 and, after scoring the last 3, lead 7-4 with around 14 minutes left in the 1st half. Timeout trees.

Buffs take a timeout with the ball and a stanford player off with a yellow card. CU has continued their momentum and are up 10-4 with around 10 minutes left in the half.

VERY good 1st half of a 1st game in the Pac 12 season (featuring I believe a 9 goal scoring run) earns the Buffs a 14-5 lead at the half.

Buffs hassling DEFENSE causing the trees a LOT of problems, leading to 13 tree turnovers (vs. 5 for the Buffs) and a BIG lead in ground balls (16-7 CU advantage).

Keep up the intensity in the 2nd half Buffs!

Buffs made me nervous for a bit as they only scored one goal in the 1st half or so of the 2nd half, which led to their lead going down to 15-10. Since then, however, they've scored 3 straight to go up 18-10.

Tree timeout with about 10 minutes to go.

really nice win. Stanford beat Stony Brook but this was a great road win. Now to be cal and get this season back on track.

Really think George needs to come up with funding for this program. Whidden is the real deal and imo she will win a national championship someplace. It could happen here but CU needs to properly fund the program and get a real field where admission can be charged and not the rec field that is Kittredge.

Congrats again to the team.

Game Recap: Lacrosse | March 08, 2019 | Linda Sprouse, Associate SID

STANFORD, Calif. –
After starting the season 1-3, the University of Colorado lacrosse team knew it needed to get a win on Friday night against Stanford. And win the Buffs did, downing the No. 15 Stanford Cardinal, 20-11, at Cagan Field.

The win was also special as the program was playing in its 100th game. Since the program started in 2014, CU has recorded a 67-33 record, all under head coach Ann Elliott Whidden.

The Buffs, which were ranked 23rd entering the contest, improved to 2-3 overall, while the Cardinal is now 4-2. It was the Pac-12 Conference opener for both teams.

"Going into this game, we knew we were in a bit of a hole based on last couple weeks," Whidden said. "Conference play is so important and Stanford is a great team, coming off a great weekend on east coast. I am proud of our energy and effort tonight. We had struggled offensively with our execution the last couple of games and our attackers have been focusing in on that the last two weeks. It paid off tonight. For us to be successful we need to execute on both ends of the field. We did a pretty good job of that tonight."

Although it was truly a team effort, offensively the Buffs were led by a pair of Buffs: seniors Samantha Nemirov and Miranda Stinson. Nemirov recorded eight points in the game, tying a school record with seven goals. Stinson added five points with four goals and one assist. Junior Julia Lisella played well in net with a season-high 14 saves.
...

KEY STATISTICS: Colorado converted on 7-of-10 free-positions attempts, while Stanford only made 2-of-8. Stanford also had 19 turnovers in the game, while the Buffs had 11.

NOTABLE:
  • Samantha Nemirov extended her point-streak to 25 games. She recorded eight points with seven goals and one assist.
  • Her seven goals tied the CU record. She joins Darby Kiernan and Miranda Stinson. Kiernan did it twice.
  • Nemirov and Miranda Stinson combined for 13 of CU's 23 points.
  • Julia Lisella earned her second win of the season with a season-best 14 saves. This is the fourth time this season she has made 10 or more saves in a game.
  • Stanford leads the all-time series at 7-5, but the Buffs have now won five of the last six contests.
  • CU is 37-0 when scoring 15 or more goals and improved to 26-21 when playing on the road.
  • CU is 8-0 when scoring 20 or more goals in a single game
  • Most combined goals this season (33).
  • The Buffs are now 2-0 on the road
  • CU is also 2-0 in Pac-12 Conference openers

cal takes a timeout with around 24 minutes left in the game as the Buffs, after giving up the 1st goal of the 2nd half, have scored the next 5 to go up 14-5. Buffs looking solid in every part of this game except the draw control, where they're down 5-15.

Timeout Buffs with them still comfortably up 17-8. They have committed quite a few turnovers lately, so coach probably isn't happy.

nice to see a freshman goalie play well. Gave the start to Molly Galloway, giving Lisella a rest. Big one this week against USC. Last year it was a great game in the snow

Game Recap: Lacrosse | March 10, 2019 | Linda Sprouse, Associate SID

BERKELEY, Calif. – Senior Miranda Stinson recorded a school record eight goals on Sunday afternoon, which helped propel the No. 23 University of Colorado lacrosse team past the California Bears, 17-11, at California Memorial Stadium.

The Buffs improved to 3-3 with the win and are now 2-0 in Pac-12 play, while the Bears are now 4-5 overall (1-1 Pac-12).

"To leave California with two wins is big for us and we need to keep building off of this," head coach Ann Elliott Whidden said. "We didn't do a great job today on some of the little things, ground balls and draw controls; we have to have a better effort as we move forward and more of a sense of urgency to finish plays. Outside of that, I thought we executed better than two weeks ago and finally put two games together back-to-back. Again, we need to build off of this and understand our potential when we compete for 60 minutes and execute our game plan. We are far from satisfied and know we need to keep getting better and control the things we can control."
...

The Buffs rested starting goalkeeper Julia Lisella; giving Molly Galloway the start. She picked up her first win and stopped 10 of 21 shots she faced.

KEY STATISTICS: Colorado out-shot Cal 34-29. CU also limited its turnovers to 11 and caused 11 of Cal's 20 turnovers. The Buffs also led in saves, recording 10 to Cal's eight. The Bears had the edge in draw controls, 22-7.

NOTABLE:
  • Samantha Nemirov extended her point-streak to 26 games, which is tied for the second longest in school history
  • Miranda Stinson has scored in 18 straight games and 44 of the last 45 games
  • Molly Galloway earned her first career collegiate start and recorded 10 saves
  • The Buffs have won the last five meetings against the Bears and lead the all-time series 5-2
  • CU is 38-0 when scoring 15 or more goals and improved to 27-21 when playing on the road
  • The Buffs are now 3-0 on the road this seasons
  • In all of CU's wins, the Buffs have recorded 17 or more goals

UP NEXT: Colorado will be back in Boulder next weekend and will host Southern California and Arizona State on March 15 and 17, respectively.

QUOTEABLE:
Head Coach Ann Elliott Whidden
"Not our prettiest game overall, but I thought we showed some resilience overall this weekend and we need that going into this middle stretch of our season."

"To leave California with two wins is big for us and we need to keep building off of this. We didn't do a great job today on some of the little things, ground balls and draw controls; we have to have a better effort as we move forward and more of a sense of urgency to finish plays. Outside of that, I thought we executed better than two weeks ago and finally put two games together back-to-back. Again, we need to build off of this and understand our potential when we compete for 60 minutes and execute our game plan. We are far from satisfied and know we need to keep getting better and control the things we can control."

"We will regroup and shift our focus to USC. This is another huge conference weekend for us coming up. Starting now that is all we are thinking about and all that matters. We know they are a great team, coming off a big weekend, and we have a lot to prove as we keep trying to dig ourselves out of the hole we got into. We will rest up, make sure we prepare well and be ready for our next challenge."

Congrats to Ms. Stinson for the conference honor.

And, surprised the team didn't get any rankings' "bump" after convincingly beating the #15 team at THEIR home this past Friday, as they are still #23 in the newest main (IWLCA/ Coaches') poll. (Of course, the team taking care of business on the field, starting with #22 USC this Friday in Boulder, is thankfully MUCH MUCH MUCH more important.)
