BOULDER - The post-season looms right around the corner for women's lacrosse, and Colorado faces a pivotal road trip as the squad travels to play Stanford and Cal this weekend.

No. 20 USC broke Colorado's (7-6, 5-2) three-game win streak in a highly competitive game last Friday night, but the Buffs recovered to defeat Arizona State to close out the weekend. With the Buffs' loss to USC though, the Trojans have clinched at least a share of the conference title. If they defeat ASU next weekend, they'll be the undisputed champions.

That means that competition for finishing second in the Pac-12 is fierce, and at 5-2 in conference, Colorado and Stanford are tied for the coveted spot. If the winner of Friday's match wins the rest of their conference games, they'll be seeded as second in the Pac-12 tournament. The No. 2 seed would provide that team with a crucial bye from the first round of the tournament and automatically place them in the semi-finals.

CU defeated Stanford (7-7, 5-2) in their first conference game while in Boulder earlier this season. The close 17-15 victory for the Buffs marked the program's and Ann Elliott Whidden's 100th win.

The Buffs will continue to fight to win one game at a time, starting with Stanford on Friday night at 5 p.m. MT and closing out the weekend with Cal at 2 p.m. MT on Sunday.

THE CARDINAL

Stanford has proven to be a formidable foe on their home field this season, boasting a 5-1 record. If the Buffs earn a victory, it'll be the first time they've defeated the Cardinal at home since 2019 and it would mark the first time that CU has swept Stanford in the regular season since 2018.

If CU hopes to walk away victorious, they'll need to shut down Annabel Frist. The sophomore is second in the Pac-12 in goals with 44 so far this season and is averaging 3.14 goals per game.

THE GOLDEN BEARS

The Buffs won in a 20-3 landslide victory over the Golden Bears (4-10, 1-6) at home earlier this year. If CU loses to Cal on Sunday, it'll be the first time they've lost since 2015.

Cal is currently on a one game winning streak, most recently defeating UC Davis 17-12. Prior to that, the Golden Bears had lost five straight conference games and are in last place in the Pac-12. Their only conference victory has come from a 13-12 win over Oregon.

It's 5 all approx. 1/2 way through the 2nd quarter. (Nice rally by CU since the early part of the game as it looks like the Trees scored the 1st 4 goals.)

Stanford got the win tonight 13-18.

Pending an upset loss or 2 in the last 2 games for the Card, that means the Buffs will be a 3 seed at the Pac 12 tournament, so they won't get a bye in the 1st round. (CU has already clinched not finishing worse than 3rd. IF they win their 1st round game, the Buffs will be playing Stanford again, only this time at Cal (who's hosting the tourney this year).)

nice win by the buffs. Nice to see Mack Moore get a goal. I dont remember her ever playing before. Got to be be better and win the pac 12 tourney to get into the NCAA imo

(Looked, and Cal won its Friday game against Oregon, giving them a season sweep (with 2 1 goal wins). I assume the Bears therefore have the tie breaker over the Ducks for the #5 seed, and with a one game lead with one remaining I'd guess that, whether the Buffs beat the Ducks or not in their final regular season this coming Friday at Kittredge the Buffs, now guaranteed to be the #3 seed, will be playing the last place Ducks back to back. The 2nd consecutive game with the Ducks will be in the 1st round of the Pac 12 tournament next Wednesday.)

BERKELEY – Colorado lacrosse took care of business against the Cal Golden Bears here at Memorial Stadium this afternoon, winning the game 19-9.

After a relatively close game in the first half, the Buffaloes (8-7, 6-3 Pac-12) were able to put Cal (5-11, 2-7 Pac-12) away with a dominant second half, outscoring the Bears 7-1 in the final two quarters.

Colorado's 19 goals were made up of 12 different goal scorers, including Charlie Rudy who scored four times while also dishing out three assists. Ashley Stokes, Sam McGee, Morgan Pence and Sydney Zimmerman each put the ball in the back of the net twice this afternoon while Mack Moore scored her first career goal.

On the defensive end, the Buffs caused seven of Cal's 19 total turnovers while allowing just one goal in the second half. Danielle Heintz played the first three quarters in net today before Grace Donnelly stepped in during the fourth. The two goalies combined for six saves on 15 shots on goal.

"I'm proud of the team. I felt like we did a pretty good job today overall. We had a stretch where we struggled competing on the draws and struggled to get stops defensively," head coach Ann Elliott Whidden said postgame. "After that, we locked it in a little better. We haven't played great in the second half the last 5 games, and today we did much better in all aspects in the second half. We need that as we head into end of our regular season."

The Buffs will look to mirror today's success as they travel back to Boulder for their regular season closer where they will face off against the Oregon Ducks on Friday, April 28th at 4:00 p.m. MT.
