Like last week, Buff Women's basketball (3-1) has a home game on Saturday (tomorrow) afternoon, and then goes on the road for a couple games (although the games are a little more spread out this week). It's the Air Force Falcons (3-0) who will be visiting Boulder tomorrow, followed by trips to visit the Tennessee Volunteers (1-2) on Friday evening (11/25) and ending with a Sunday game at the Chicago State Cougars (0-4).

Tomorrow's game is scheduled to be viewable via a CU-provided Live Stream, while next Friday's game MAY be on the SEC Network, and Sunday's MAY be available for those who have a premium ($) subscription to FloSports. (Further info and links for media options available near the bottom of this thread.)

BOULDER – Colorado women's basketball makes a quick stop back at the CU Events Center for its fourth game in eight days on Saturday. The Buffaloes will host Air Force (2 p.m. MT), before heading back out on the road.

Colorado (3-1) dropped its first contest of the season at Texas Tech on Wednesday. The Buffs got called for the second-most fouls in program history (34), leading to 41 free-throw attempts for the Lady Raiders. CU struggled to adjust to all the whistles and was never able to find a consistent rhythm.

"We have to take ownership in our role in everything that happens, good or bad," head coach JR Payne expressed about the overtime loss. "I think we should celebrate our successes and prioritize learning from areas where we didn't perform the way we wanted. There's a ton of things we can learn from a game like that."

The Buffs and Falcons have met in each of the last two seasons and seven times in all. Colorado has never dropped a game to Air Force, owning a 7-0 record. Last season's contest at the Academy was the breakout game for Quay Miller. She had 17 points and helped lead the Buffs to a hard-fought 58-53 win.

Air Force (3-0) has gotten off to its best start since the 2005-06 season. The Falcons have wins over Denver, Navy and Adams State. Consistent with years past, Air Force has been pesky on defense and disciplined with the ball on offense. AFA ranks fourth in the NCAA in steals per game (16.7) and is forcing 24.3 turnovers per game (32nd NCAA). The Falcons are 12th in the country with a 12.0 turnover margin.

"Both teams want to play with discipline," Payne explained. "Last time we played, we did not show a lot of discipline. It's an area that we have to be able to prioritize and fix pretty quickly. Air Force is always a really tough team to play. I don't know that we'll be able too many turnovers because they take care of the ball really well. But if we can be disciplined in our defensive philosophies and goals, then I still expect us to be able to defend well."

Early on, the Buffs have been shooting the ball well. The Buffs have shot 48.1% from the floor through four games and 41.2% from 3-point range. Nine different players have made a 3 this season, led by nine apiece from Frida Formann and Quay Miller. Nationally, the Buffs rank 21st in 3-point shooting %, while Miller is second in the nation, hitting 81.8% from deep.

"We need balance in everything that we're doing," Payne added. "We want to take and learn what is a great shot for our team. What's a good shot for me individually, but also what's a great team shot? I think that's an area that we need to prioritize and grow in. We want our players to be confident shooting the ball and feel good about it."

The Saturday afternoon matchup will be streamed on CUBuffs.com/WatchWBB. Cory Lopez and Carol Callan will once again have the call on the stream, the Varsity app and the Colorado Radio Network.

Fans through the door on Saturday will receive a CU Basketball apron (while supplies last).

Air Force always gives CU problems. Always. Doesn't mean we won't win, but it's never an easy game.

Buffs were down 2-10 early, but they are now up by 1 around 3 minutes into the 2nd quarter.

BOULDER — Jaylyn Sherrod and Kindyll Wetta each scored 15 points to lead the Colorado Buffaloes women's basketball team to hard-fought 71-63 win over the Air Force Academy Falcons here in a Saturday afternoon matinee.

In four previous visits here, Air Force left here on average with nearly 31-point losses. But that wasn't the case here Saturday, as the upstart Falcons were tough to handle from the get-go, forcing CU to rally from an early 8-point deficit, a margin the Buffs didn't match until the final score.

The win prevented a potential first 4-0 start in 17 seasons for the Zoomies.

Colorado (4-1) didn't take the lead for good until there was 8:11 remaining in the game, and after going up by five, 55-50, with 6:19 to go, saw the Falcons (3-1) pull back to within one (55-54) and then down by two three times before closing the game on a 6-0 run.

"Wow. I told the team right after shoot around and we reiterated it here, anytime you play the Air Force Academy, (coach) Chris Gobrecht does an incredible job with her teams," CU head coach JR Payne said. "They are ultimately one of the toughest, most resilient, sort of hardnosed teams that we play all year and this afternoon was certainly no different. We expected a dogfight and we got one, just proud of how we responded in the second half.

"I thought we picked up our tenacity and confidence and aggressiveness in the second half," she continued. "Which I think was the key to us being able to play better basketball. So proud of how we responded and certainly again, a lot of things that we can continue to grow in."
...

UP NEXT: Colorado will travel to Knoxville to take on No. 11 Tennessee in a 5:00 p.m. game this Friday; the game will be televised on the SEC Network. The Lady Vols (2-2) opened the year ranked fifth, but have since suffered losses to No. 14 Ohio State and No. 12 Indiana; Tennessee beat Rutgers, 94-54, in the first round of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in the Bahamas, and will play UCLA on Sunday and one more game in the event before hosting CU.

NOTES: Colorado now leads the all-time series by an 8-0 count (5-0 in Boulder); the Buffaloes have won all five games with the Falcons under Payne, whom in her seventh season at CU is nearing the century mark in wins (98-85). She is now 199-198 in 13 seasons overall in the collegiate ranks … CU was coming off a frustrating 86-85 loss at Texas Tech on Wednesday in its third and final game of the Women's Preseason NIT, a game in which the Buffaloes led most of the way but were called for 34 fouls, with three players fouling out and three others tagged four times; the Buffs weren't called for their first foul Saturday until nearly 14 minutes in and had just 13; CU was whistled for one every 80 seconds against the Red Raiders … Colorado improved to 13-1 on games played on November 19 (11-0 at home) … The first six games in the series had seen CU win each by at least 21 points; CU won last year in Colorado Springs, 58-53.

Additional Quotes
Coach JR Payne

ON GETTING BETTER IN CRUNCH TIME—"We have a team full of players that want to be coached and want to learn and they want to know the areas that they can be better and we have a coaching staff that also wants to know the areas that we can be better. So when we have a tough loss like that at Texas Tech, we do a really deep dive into what we could have done better. Where do we need to improve? Our team was very responsive to that coaching and I thought we improved. We take losses as a learning lessons and try to be better and I think we were."

ON FOULING LESS—"We did talk a lot about making in-game adjustments. If something's being called really tight, we have to adjust. We want to learn, we want to be better. We did a good job of that, making that adjustment and making sure we weren't committing silly fouls like two touches on a ball handler and things like that. So that was a big area that we wanted to grow and we did."

ON THE UPCOMING GAME AGAINST TENNESSEE—"We're super excited for the opportunity. I'm actually from Tennessee and I have a lot of family there but I've never been to Pat Summitt court before, so I'm very excited for that opportunity. We don't know anything about them other than they're probably pretty good. So coaches will dive into the scout while these guys rest for a couple days, and we'll be very excited for that game."

We will be without Frida tonight. She is in Denmark playing for the national team. Looks like she was playing very well. Somebody will have to step up, but if Tennessee keeps making so many turnovers, we will be okay. If they have cleaned up the turnovers, it will be a battle, especially at Rocky Top.

NOXVILLE – Head coach JR Payne and her Colorado Buffaloes travel to No. 23 Tennessee for a Black Friday showdown at Thomas-Boling Arena.

Colorado (4-1) will be making its first trip to Knoxville since Dec. 20, 1993. The Buffaloes and Lady Vols have met on four previous occasions, the last coming being in Iowa City, Iowa, in the 1997 NCAA Tournament.

The Buffs are no stranger to the big stage, playing in hostile arenas throughout the Pac-12. The lore of Tennessee women's basketball cannot be denied, but Colorado has built a reputation in the last couple of seasons of not being afraid of anybody.

"It's exciting to go play another team on a historic floor," Payne explained. "Tennessee has that glory and history and that is exciting for us. We're the team that's not afraid of anybody. We play really great teams in our league every single night and I think we see Tennessee as another really great team like the Stanford's and the Oregon's. We're just excited to get an opportunity to play someone like that this early in the season."

Colorado will use the Thanksgiving holiday as another opportunity to grow tighter as a unit. The Buffs have been together ever since the team's trip to Spain in August.

"I think our team is naturally very close," Payne said of spending the holiday together. "Spain kind of kickstarted all that. We're excited to all be together. We've done some different things throughout November to remind us of what we are thankful for. I think we're a really tight-knit group and it sort of makes sense for us to be together on Thanksgiving."

The Buffs battled back from eight down against Air Force to earn a 71-63 win last Saturday. The Buffs were able to outlast the Falcons despite a season-low in made field goals (23) and matching their season-high in turnovers (20).

"I don't think we improved [from Texas Tech] against Air Force," Payne noted. "We just didn't have a lot of flow. I don't know if it was due to travel, having been on the road and then playing right away. But I didn't think we played particularly well. We're looking to play better next time around."

Tennessee (2-4) started the season ranked No. 5 in the nation, but has had losses to Ohio State, Indiana, UCLA and Gonzaga to start the year. The Lady Vols are coming off a stretch of three games in three days, playing at the Bad Boy Mowers Women's Battle 4 Atlantis. Rickea Jackson leads UT with 17.7 points per game.

Friday's game will be carried on the SEC Network (5 p.m. MT). Courtney Lyle and Steffi Sorensen will have the call. Cory Lopez will be live with pregame coverage starting at 4:30 MT on the Colorado Radio Network.

This evening's game not going great so far- it's 22-9 TN with ~7 minutes left in the 2nd quarter.

Starters were -

Only scoring 14 points in the 1st half took the Buffs out of this one. At least they competed hard and pretty evenly (only -2) in the 2nd half.

Not having Frida there really hurt.

Between the two teams, there were 47 turnovers. Tennessee's big problem has been turnovers. However, 25 of the turnovers were by CU.

Buffs up 8 with around 4 minutes left in the 1st quarter.

Looks like the starting lineup is more back to normal today (other than Sadler starting for a 2nd straight game, this time for Jones).
