Games thread - WOMEN'S Bball scheduled to be on the road vs. Cal (Friday, 2/10/21, 8:00 PM MT) and #2 Stanford (Sunday, 1:00 PM MT)

Women's bball (15-6, 4-6 in Pac 12 play) is scheduled to visit the Nor. Cal. schools, 1st facing off against Cal (10-6, 1-4) this Friday night, followed up with a Sunday noon matinee vs. #2 Stanford (19-3, 10-0).

Both games are slotted to be on the Pac 12 Bay Area channel. (See near the bottom of this post for links and more info.)

(Note - At this point, the Buffs are #35 in the NET rankings, so I believe still have control over their own destiny as far as making the NCAA tournament, with 6 scheduled regular season games remaining along with the Pac 12 tourney, along with 2 possible makeup games. (Believe I saw a Brian Howell tweet say a couple days ago that someone's bracketology estimate had them down to a #10 seed.) Stanford is #3 in NET, while Cal is #95.)

BERKELEY, Calif. – Six games remain on the schedule for Colorado as the lead-up to the Pac-12 Tournament in Las Vegas enters the final crunch. The Buffaloes will begin the final sprint with its first of four straight road games when they take on California on Friday (8 p.m. MT).

Colorado (15-6, 4-6 Pac-12) is no stranger to prolonged road trips this season. CU previously experienced a four-game road swing thanks to a makeup game at Oregon State (Jan. 17) that was added on the front end of an originally scheduled three-game trip.

"We are excited to embrace the challenge of playing great basketball down the stretch," head coach JR Payne commented.

The Buffs have gone 4-3 on the road this season, with its last game resulting in a 66-62 overtime win at Utah. The team is shooting 40.5% from the floor away from Boulder and has held opponents to just 38.8% shooting on their home courts this season.

"Taking it one game at a time is our utmost priority," Payne continued. "We will continue to focus on going 1-0 on game days."


California (10-6, 1-4 Pac-12) boasts the conferences' leading scorer in freshman Jayda Curry (19.8 pgg). Curry is one of the top freshmen in the nation this season, having won Pac-12 Freshman of the Week five times this season. It will be CU's first time matching up against Curry and the Golden Bears this season. Cal had to postpone the first meeting on Jan. 16 due to COVID issues. Cal has had more postponements (6) than conference games (5) this season.

The second stop on the trip is a visit to No. 2 Stanford on Sunday (1 p.m. MT). The Cardinal snapped CU's 13-game winning streak in the first meeting at the CU Events Center. The loss sent the Buffs on a four-game skid and the team will be looking to return the favor inside Maples Pavilion.

The last two games of the trip feature a return visit to California next weekend. CU will take on UCLA and USC before closing the season with games against Oregon and Oregon State.

Both games this weekend will be on the Pac-12 Networks. Krista Blunk and Drew Shiller will be on the broadcast. Cory Lopez will on the call again for the Colorado Radio Network with pregame coverage starting at 7:30 p.m. MT.

Hopefully, they can beat Cal tonight.

I don't have a lot of hope about beating Stanford but I hope they prove me wrong.

Buffs played a strong game. They didn't adjust to the way the officials were calling the game in the 1st half and had 6 players with 2 fouls each at the half.

The team stat line is excellent. 49% from the field, 86% from the free throw line, out rebounded Cal, scored 25 points off 23 Cal turnovers.

Frida found her groove from the 3 point line but no one else did. Jaylyn didn't score much but she had 7 assists and Mya had 5. Coach J will be happy with the Buffs' 12 turnovers.

Tomorrow will be the big test.

BERKELEY, Calif. – Colorado started its four-game road trip with a 73-56 win over California inside Haas Pavilion on Friday night. The Buffaloes used a 25-point third-quarter t help solidify the victory.

Peanut Tuitele and Lesila Finau stood out in front of their friends and family. Tuitele, from nearby Chico, Calif., scored 11 of her 15 points in the second half helping Colorado outscored the Golden Bears 40-27 in the final 20 minutes. Finau, from Dublin, Calif., had 11 points and tied her season-high with three steals.

"I think it was the same thing last year," Finau said about playing in front of her friends and family. "It's always nice to perform well in front of family. I guess show out a little and give them a little entertainment. I do kind of have a chip on my shoulder from Cal not recruiting me."

Fifth-year senior Mya Hollingshed closed the night with 14 points and seven rebounds but didn't play the entire second quarter because of her two fouls.

Colorado (16-6, 5-6 Pac-12) forced 23 Cal turnovers and outscored the home team 25-1 in points off turnovers. CU finished the game +11 in turnover margin with only 12 against. The Buffs outshot Cal 49.1% to 38.6% and made 11 more field goals.

"I'm very pleased with tonight," head coach JR Payne stated. "A coach always loves a total team effort and we had that tonight. We had to adjust a little with foul trouble and every player scored and almost every player had a rebound. It was just a great team effort. I thought we kind of flexed on them in the second half defensively and then executed well against some zone defense that we haven't seen a lot of this year.

"We made a concerted effort to try to be more aggressive," Payne noted. "It feels like we are doing that at every halftime. We should be doing that from the opening tip. The foul count was so off [in the first half] that we just felt like we needed to be more aggressive, and I think that was a lot of our scoring in the third quarter."


Colorado's lead never dipped below 11 in the fourth quarter as the Buffs shot 6-for-12 in the period to thwart any kind of Cal comeback.


Turning Point: Colorado led 49-42 when Sherrod stepped to the free-throw line with 1:35 to play in the third quarter. She hit both attempts to put the Buffs ahead by nine, 41-42. Colorado then scored seven points in 59 seconds to take the commanding 16-point lead into the fourth quarter.


Up Next: Colorado continues on the road with a rematch at No. 2 Stanford on Sunday (1 p.m. MT, Pac-12 Networks).

Refs being very generous to the defense on the block/charge call. Need to adjust.

They don't adjust to how the officials are calling the game. They were lucky no one fouled out, not that it would have mattered.

If you can't defend the 3 and you can't put the ball in the basket, you get beat.

Mya Hollingshed is my favorite athlete at CU right now. Very athletic and skilled, and I enjoy watching her play.
