Oregon had Stanford on the ropes Sunday. With their NET rank, Ducks should be ranked in the top 20. This is a major test.

I think both games will be a test. I feel like this is a good defensive team, but we lack in offense.

Article on a couple of the senior Buffs who will be celebrated Saturday-

BOULDER – Four years ago a group of five freshmen began a journey together with the Colorado women's basketball team in Boulder.

Today, only two remain and the bond they share is undeniable.

Seniors Lesila Finau and Peanut Tuitele started this journey together in 2018 and the two will play their final home games at the CU Events Center this week, starting with the Oregon Ducks on Wednesday (7 p.m. MT, Pac-12 Networks).

The two players both from Polynesian backgrounds and separated by three hours of highway in California became quickly acquainted in the team's summer workouts leading up to the Buffs' foreign tour to Italy in the summer of 2018.

The pair roomed together for summer workouts and have pretty much been inseparable since.

"She's been my ride or die since day one," Tuitele said of Finau.

On the court, the duo got thrown into action early, both getting double-digit starts in their rookie seasons. Finau got the nod in 13 of the final 15 games, taking over for an injured Kennedy Leonard. Tuitele took over a starting role just six games into her career.

"I did not know what to expect [as a freshman]," Tuitele recalled. "When I did come in, I was like, 'Oh man, I need to get everything together.' It was a different ballgame."

"It was definitely different," Finau agreed. "The competition is better, and I didn't realize how much work needed to get put in to become of the best, especially in this conference. It was inspiring [the talent in the conference] and it made me want to be better."

The two player's paths began to deviate in the coming seasons. Tuitele early on cemented herself as a consistent post-player and a vocal leader for the Buffs. While at the same time, Finau was in a mix of guards in a guard-heavy roster, vying for opportunities and playing time.

"I've always believed in myself since I stepped on campus," Tuitele noted. "I knew my role coming in and I don't think it's changed. I'm glad the coaches have appreciated the work I've put in throughout these four years. I knew who I was as a basketball player and what I could do."

Head coach JR Payne has had a front-row seat for four years and has watched the evolution of the two women every step of the way.

"I put more stock in doing everything you can to help the team be successful," Payne commented. "I think both of them epitomize that. Peanut has just been rock solid but really developed off the court with her leadership and ability to lead by example.

"Sila's been the ultimate 'I'll do whatever the team needs me to do' player." Payne continued. "When she was a freshman and Kennedy went out she had to fill the role of playing 30 plus minutes a night a point guard, which is very difficult to do. She has honestly done whatever the team needed her to do at that moment and that's not easy to do but she's done it very well. She's at a place now where she's just doing great at everything."

That 'do whatever' attitude has helped establish Finau's identity on and off the court.

"It has been difficult," Finau recalled. "I think what I've experienced throughout each year has made me the person and player that I am today. It has made me want to lead this team and have an impact on its future. I think it's helped me a lot."

The perseverance that Finau has displayed has not gone unnoticed by her teammates, especially Tuitele.

"I've seen tremendous growth from her. I can't imagine the adversity that she's been through, going from different position every year. It's unpredictable and she fought through it and she's the leader she is now. A lot of people look up to her. I look up to her because it is a difficult journey that she's been through. She's made the best of it and has never complained. She took it to heart and she's the leader she is today because of that adversity. I wouldn't want anyone else by my side."

Tuitele has never shied away from being a vocal presence for the Buffs. She stepped into that role early in her CU tenure, even while sharing the floor with more experienced leaders like Mya Hollingshed.

"She's been that vocal presence from the jump," Finau admired. "Each year she continues to grow and because of that everyone has respect for her. It's something everyone looks up to and hopes to be. I think I got that from her because I didn't have that vocal presence as a freshman. Not even as a sophomore, but I think that's what got me to step up."

The ink hasn't settled on yet on the final chapter, but with time winding down the two have plenty to appreciate.

"Each year feels like it has gone by so slow," Finau joked. "But now we're seniors about to go into March. Just enjoy the moment. Enjoy the people that you encountered. Not everyone gets this opportunity."

"Just live in the moment," Tuitele further explained. "I've enjoyed every moment since I've been here and I'm going to enjoy all my time left as a Buff."

Hell of a response by our Buffs. Ducks dominated the first part of Q3 and took a small lead. Buffs responded and ended up winning the quarter.

47-38 heading into the final frame.

Oregon got hot, esp. from 3, to comeback and take a narrow 1 point lead around halfway through the 3rd quarter, then the Buffs come back STRONG to take a 47-38 lead into the final quarter.

BOULDER – It took every bit of 50 minutes for the Colorado Buffaloes to upset No. 25 Oregon on Wednesday night at the CU Events Center. The Buffs won the race to the finish, closing out the double-overtime victory with a 86-83 triumph.

The Buffs led by 14 points in the fourth quarter, before Oregon came back to tie the game at 72 at the end of regulation. The game remained tied at 80 at the end of the first extra period, forcing CU to play its first double OT game since 2014.

"I'm really proud of our effort and togetherness," head coach JR Payne opened with after the win. "We stuck together the entire game. When things were really going great, we stuck together. When things were not going great, the most beautiful thing about it was these [players] that held us together in timeouts and huddles. There wasn't even a lot that I needed to say as far as what we needed to focus on or what our priority should be. These [players] took control of that with great leadership and so much heart on so many plays."

The win for Colorado was its 19th of the season and its first against a ranked opponent since upsetting No. 1 Stanford last season. It also snapped a six-game losing streak to the Ducks. The team improves to 8-7 in Pac-12 play with one game left before the conference tournament in Las Vegas.

Preview for tomorrow's game (Mainly on Mya Hollingshed's great career as a Buff heading into tomorrow's senior day) -

Direct link - https://cubuffs.com/news/2022/2/25/...h-year-proves-right-move-for-hollingshed.aspx

"
BOULDER — Unfinished business?

That's not Mya Hollingshed's style. The 6-foot-3 Colorado forward finishes what she starts.

Thus, despite the fact that a pro career was waiting in the wings a year ago, Hollingshed chose to return to the Buffaloes for a fifth season.

Now, as the calendar prepares to flip to March — the most important month in college hoops — Hollingshed and her teammates are ready to take care of the business that has been waiting for far too long.

"We want to put Colorado back on the map," Hollingshed said earlier this week. "We want to make an NCAA run and set up the program for the future. Future players can see what we have been able to accomplish and see that standard. This is the time to pick it up and play our best basketball."

Whether JR Payne's Buffs go on to earn that coveted NCAA bid remains to be seen. Currently with a NET ranking in the 30s and competing in arguably the toughest conference in the nation, the Buffs are at the moment pegged as a solid at-large bid team.

But what is not a matter of debate is the contribution Hollingshed has made to the team, the program and CU Athletics. When she plays what will likely be her last game at the CU Events Center on Saturday against Oregon State at noon (Pac-12 Networks), she will need no introduction.
...

"Mya Hollingshed's presence has been felt throughout her entire career here at the University of Colorado," Payne said. " As a freshman, she was a long, athletic kid with a world of potential and a huge smile for anyone and everyone. As a fifth-year senior, she is a veteran leader with the confidence of a college graduate, a 1,600 point scorer and a leader in our Buff community. I am incredibly proud of all that Mya has accomplished in her time here at CU and I'm excited for her future. I have no doubt she will be a tremendous success as a professional basketball player and in life."

Hollingshed said she will leave CU with the comfort of knowing that she helped establish a strong foundation for the program. That, she believes, is a legacy that will last.

"I hope people remember me as a player who tried to step up every night," she said. "I didn't play for myself. I played for our team and the program. When I look back at my journey, I hope it sets an example. It shows that you can do anything if you put your mind to it."
