| BANDON, Ore. - What a difference a couple of weeks have made for the University of Colorado men's golf team. At least after the first round of the Bandon Dunes Championship, which was completed here Friday. In late February, the Buffaloes finished 15th in The Prestige at PGA West ... out of as many teams. But fast-forward to Friday, and the Buffaloes are tied for second, just one shot out of the lead. No. 49 Oregon turned in a 2-over par team score of 290, just one ahead of Colorado (ranked No. 79) and Missouri-Kansas City. At present, the Buffs have the advantage over seven teams ranked ahead of them, including No. 3 Washington and No. 14 SMU (UCLA is ranked second, but sent their second five here). Conditions were challenging, with the temperature peaking at 47 degrees in the early afternoon and winds blowing at times to 15 miles per hour, making the wind chill at times in the low 30s. "It was a solid day overall by the guys who counted for us," Colorado head coach Roy Edwards. "It was a tough day out here and they played with a level of toughness. When the guys got in trouble they really mitigated mistakes. When we play that way, we usually play pretty well and that was the case today. If we are able to do that tomorrow and Sunday we will be in a great position." Senior Jason Burstyn, and sophomore David Oraee played the course to a draw Friday, both shooting par 72s on the 6,859-yard, par-72 Old Macdonald Course. Burstyn parred his first nine holes and then had three birdies and three bogeys on his second nine; Oraee had four birdies and 11 pars against two bogeys and a double for his score. The Buff duo is tied for eighth place, two out of the lead. Freshman Philip Juel-Berg is tied for 15th after a steady round which saw him finish with a 1-over 73. He had a team-best five birdies with seven pars and six bogeys in recording his score. He bogeyed his first two holes to get to 2-over right away, but on two occasions worked things back to 1-under before closing with two bogeys in his last six holes. Senior Derek Fribbs carded a 2-over 74, which has him tied for 23rd; he had three birdies and 11 pars against three bogeys and a double; he was 4-over through 11 holes, but reeled things in to close with two of his birds and five pars. Redshirt freshman Drew Trujillo is playing in his fifth tournament this year, but the first where his scores count toward the CU team total. He struggled mightily on Friday, but hung in there as best he could, scoring nine pars, seven bogeys and two doubles for an 11-over 83. He was 3-over after eight before scoring par on just four of his last 10 holes. Fresno State's Troix Tonkham and SMU's Harry Higgs are tied for the lead with a 2-under 70 scores, as the course and conditions prevented anyone from posting a round in the 60s, though Burstyn was in position to do so until bogeying his last hole (No. 10). The second round of the tournament is Saturday, with CU teeing off No. 11 (yes, No. 11) between 9:18 and 9:54 a.m. mountain time; the final round is set for Sunday. BUFFALO INDIVIDUALS
