Former BV West standout makes strides at UCLA

By KELLIS ROBINETT

The Kansas City Star

Jon Embree thinks the world of his oldest son. Most fathers do.

And like most fathers, he compliments his son whenever possible. He watches him play football as often as he can, and with enough hard work, he says, his boy could one day play in the NFL — just like he did.

That praise could easily be passed off as standard admiration between family members, but it is impossible to ignore the substantial progress Taylor Embree has made during his short time at UCLA, which is Kansas State’s opponent on Saturday night.

Coming out of high school, Taylor, a former Overland Park resident and Blue Valley West standout, was a lightly recruited wide receiver with few options at the next level. UCLA was the only program to offer him a scholarship, so to Los Angeles he went.

It’s been enough to make him forget about how Colorado — the place where he always wanted to go and where Jon played and helped coach for 10 years — barely looked at him in the recruiting process.
His father and his uncle were great players, and Jon is a great coach. Not sure how UCLA was his only offer. Especially with his last name.

Jon Embree was on Kyle Dorrell's staff at UCLA, and I'm doubtful that we would have got him to come to CU instead of the school his father was coaching for, especially after Embree didn't get either the head coaching gig in 05 or the OC job in 2000.

Sounds to me like he wanted to come to CU. We just didn't want him.

That's one possibility. Bad politics to have the guy who almost had your job's son in your locker room?

Edit: Easier to read if re-typed as... Bad locker room politics to have on your team the son of the guy who almost had your job?
