How do they choose what player...

Will host a recruit, beyond same state or position? Is everyone expected to host at one time or another, or do they have a list of those who would rather not host?
As an introvert, I can't think of anything less appealing than hanging out with someone I barely knew.

On paper, I dread that kind of stuff - training a new coworker, or show the “new kid” at school around. I didn’t like being trained in a one-on-one scenario, or group projects in school…in reality - I made many friends this way. Still, my natural perspective is let me be, and don’t force me to be an ambassador or training/mentor type…

I was more apt to duck out of this kind of situation back in college more so than today.

Complicated and every coach does it differently.

There are some veteran guys who volunteer to do it, more often the coaches look at who they think would do the best job and ask them. Don't know of many schools where it would be mandatory though.

As far as pairing up they may consider position but more often will try to match personalities or shared interest or background. If you are bringing in a kid from say the Houston area first choice might be a veteran player from the same area, even the same HS or league.

You want someone who is going to convince the recruit that if they come here they aren't going to be a stranger and that they will easily adapt and fit in.
 
Coaches don't typically choose. The on-campus director handles that. Players aren't forced to do it if they don't want to, but the director will pick who he/she thinks would be the best person for the visit and asks them. And that decision is based on similar position, similar personality, similar interests, growing up in similar areas etc.
