How important are "Buff ties" to you with the coaching hire?

How important is it that the next HC have CU ties?

So there's a few that went the alumni route:

Ault
Wandstedt
Beamer
Gundy

And some others that didn't:

Meyer
Saban
Tressel
Stoops
Mack Brown
Bielema
Gary Patterson
Chris Petersen
Miles
Petrino
Chip Kelly
Chizik

I prefer the second group. Get the best coach we can afford, and even stretch if we have to. CU can't let a few hundred thousand dollars prevent us from getting the best coach we can.

You have two different sample sizes. There are a lot more non-alum coaches out there then alum. I would be curious as to the alum group and who is doing well and who is not.
I would add that Pat Fitz. is doing a good job at Northwestern. Whereas Slick Ricky is doing a **** job at UCLA (like any of us are suprised). Anyone got any others for the list, good and bad?

EDIT: and he's been mentioned, but what the guy at Syracuse has done so far is nothing short of a miracle.

**tried the "family" hire and failed miserably with more resources than Mac/EB would have in a million years. Shula, Blake. Also, pretty sure David McWilliams at UT was a Darrel Royal "family guy" and he was so bad they went out and hired John Mackovic.

KingPants, I'm sure there are others, I was just taking a quick look at the top 25 and it's filled (overwhelmingly) with non-alum head coaches. It's not exactly scientific, but arguably the best football programs in the country (Texas, Florida, Ohio State, Oklahoma, etc.) Went out and hired the best guy they could get even if it wasn't an alum - I think we need to follow that model.

Something to think about.....

BOLD are hires that had no prior relationship with school.
ITALICS are hires that had prior relationship with school, or were promoted from within the program.

+rep for the research. So what your saying is that there is no good way to do this thing...

i would wager that nearly all the "promoted internally"s are cases where the previous HC either retired or was hired somewhere else....not after the previous HC get axed....no surprise there. But, at least implies that "promoted internally" is an index of a program that is most likely healthy, with a stable staff, recruiting off success/continuity, and winning. a better situation that taking over a train-wreck or historical loser.

interesting research Slade.

Ties to the University are not relevant and should not be a factor. I continue to be totally baffled by some who do not like Calhoun. He is not my first choice but he certainly has the right credentials and is an attractive candidate at this level.

Also interesting, but probably not surprising, is that with the exception of Tressel and Mike Sherman, all the guys who became HC at the school where they previously coached were coordinators there. Not many position coaches getting hired for the top post. Not sure what this means for EB, but we'd be going a route not many schools have gone if we go with him.
