As with the other more "individual" sports, thought I'd set up this thread to report on notable results for the indoor track and field men's and women's teams throughout the regular season, as well as any other general news that pops up during the season regarding the teams and any of their individuals. (Separate threads will be set when the 2 biggest meets of the year get near to starting up - the MPSF (Conference) Championships (2/22 & 2/23) and of course NCAA Championships (3/8-3/9).)

As always, I recommend anyone interested in following the team (especially related to her multi-event and jump athletes but often also covering the team in general) follow Coach Lindsey Malone on social media (https://twitter.com/CoachLMaloneCU and https://www.instagram.com/coachlindseymalone/), as she's probably the most socially media conscious and comprehensive of any CU coach in any sport. Of course, the main track accounts (https://twitter.com/CUBuffsTrack and https://www.instagram.com/cubuffstrack/) also provide updates , and can be valuable to follow, especially to keep up with the often NCAA championship-level distance athletes.
(Note- I believe the CU coaches usually give the top distance folks a competition break for awhile after cross country season before they start again worrying about indoor, so we might not hear much about them until, at least, the new year. Some other schools do have their runners do a quick race or two trying to capitalize on their cross country fitness to earn NCAA qualifying times (one young woman from the U. of New Mexico just ran the 3rd fastest time ever for an indoor 5K in a Boston race), but I can't recall the Buffs doing this.)
__________________________________________________________________________

The teams (mainly looks like the multi-event folk) started action today in Golden at, I assume, the School of Mines, and looks like we already have a school record EARLY in the season for an individual event within the women's pentathlon. Congrats to senior Maja Wichhart-Donzo!

_________________________________________________________________________

Edit- Wanted to add info for how athletes qualify for the NCAA Indoor T & F Championships. Unlike outdoors, there are no regional championships run to choose who advances. It's merely-
  • Individually, it's just the athletes who earn the top 16 times or marks during the qualifying period who accept the invitation to go the championships for that event.
  • For relays, it's the teams with the top 12 times who accept a bid.
  • Note that there are adjustments made for (1) altitude and (2) facility rating.
  • Full explanation of qualifying is at http://www.ustfccca.org/meets-results/ncaa-championship-qualifying-criteria#d1ITF .
To keep up with how individual Buffs are placed to qualify, I believe the official resource for times are-

Article on today's action in Golden. Congrats again to Ms. Wichhart-Donzo, this time for a very good overall (and winning) pentathlon, especially for the 1st competition of the year, with a couple other pentathletes also already posting better or close to better scores than they did all last indoor season.

"
GOLDEN – Three women of the University of Colorado track and field program posted top marks in the pentathlon Thursday evening to kick off the 2018-19 indoor track and field season at the Mines Alumni Classic & Multi in Golden.

Maja Wichhart-Donzo, Michaela Wenning and Drianna Mustin all posted marks that replicated or bettered their marks from the MPSF Championships last indoor season. Wichhart-Donzo won the event with a mark of 3,909, a 100-point improvement from the end of last indoor season. Wenning was second with a score of 3,832, and 80-point improvement, while Mustin scored 3,506 which was three points from matching last season's best mark.

Wichhart-Donzo's score was just four points from tying the national-leading mark in the early season. She is just the second woman to break 3,900 this season in the NCAA with teammate Wenning sitting third in the rankings. Mustin's mark will put her fifth in the very-early rankings.
...

Wichhart-Donzo's final point total puts her fourth in school history with the sixth-best ever result in the event. It is also the best mark ever run in the state of Colorado in school history, beating Abrianna Torres's mark in 2015 at the Air Force Academy by more than 20 points.

On the men's side in the heptathlon, freshman Josh Farmer sits fourth after a day of competition while Davis Butte sits ninth and Aaron Carmichael is 16th.
...

The gentlemen will begin tomorrow's events with the 60-meter hurdles, followed by the pole vault and conclude the meet with the 1,000-meter run.

Also for Colorado, Gunner Rigsby jumped 6.99m (22-11¼) in the long jump to place fourth.

Running events begin tomorrow at 11:20 a.m. with the women's hurdles, an event CU will have three in. Field events start at 10 a.m. with triple jump. The throwers this weekend will be in action at the Air Force Holiday Open and begin competition in the afternoon.

Note- I originally missed that there was a preview article posted yesterday for this meet (and the one at Air Force tomorrow where a couple throwers look to be going) at https://cubuffs.com/news/2018/12/4/track-and-field-buffs-open-season-across-front-range.aspx .

From that article, a few links -
Live streaming of the Colorado School of Mines meet (IF the links start working, nice they offer this- it's VERY rare for regular season "non-elite" meets. Hope maybe the Buffs can for one or both of their home meets this season.?.) - http://www.minesathletics.com/tv and/ or https://minesathletics.com/www.minesathletics.com/tv

Looks like (along with some other results) the men also had some nice finishes in their multi-event competition that ended yesterday. (Edit- have to say the below doesn't sound totally accurate re the Buff men's place nationally in the multi-events. Mr. Butte ended up in 5th (and still obviously great he earned a PR this early in the season); assume they're saying he has the leading score in D1 track (???) so far early in the season; but 3 D2 athletes finished ahead of him (along with the winner being an unattached CSU heptathlete), so I wouldn't say he leads the nation.)-

GOLDEN – Just a day after the CU women posted the first and third best marks in the nation in the pentathlon, the University of Colorado track and field program's male heptathlon student-athletes Davis Butte and Josh Farmer posted the first and fourth-best marks in the nation Friday in Golden at the Mines Alumni Classic & Multi.

After finishing the first day of competition in ninth place, Butte exploded in the second day of competition to take over the national-leading mark at 5,011. The first event of day two was the 60 hurdles in which he ran 8.69 for a fourth-place finish. The lone event that he won was the men's pole vault in which he posted a huge personal best with a jump of 4.80 meters (15-feet, 9-inches). He finished out the second day of competition with a sixth-place finish in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:54.22. His total score was nearly 400 points more than his season-best last year. He also became just the eighth Buff to break the 5,000-point mark in school history.
...

The other key event for the Buffaloes this Friday was the women's 60-meter hurdles. A trio of CU women made it to finals in the event, making up nearly half of the field. Eriana Henderson inched out the win against teammate Valerie Welch as the duo were so close they actually hit each other numerous times in the race. Henderson picked up the win with a personal-best time of 8.67, edging out Welch by just two-hundredths of a second. Teammate Kylie Davis also eclipsed the 9-second barrier with a race of 8.99 for fourth place.
...

A handful of other Colorado athletes competed in field events across the front range this weekend. High jump duo Giancarlo Narvarte and freshman Jeremy Cody both had good performances at Mines with leaps of 2.01m (6-7) and 1.98m (6-6), respectfully. Gunner Rigsby posted an early season mark of 13.72m (45-0¼) in the triple jump, while on the women's side Sarah Hopkins nearly matched her season-best of last year with a jump of 11.64m (38-2¼). Cheyenne Cheshier also performed well with a mark of 11.41m (37-5¼) as the women finished third and fourth in the event.

Down South to the Air Force Academy, four CU throwers took to the ring in the Air Force Holiday Open. The women posted a pair of top-four finishes in the weight and shot put, while Brock Knechtel threw for the first time indoors in his career with a mark of 14.02m (46-0) in the weight. Mariah Walker threw 13.71m (44-11¾) for a third-place finish in the shot put, while Elisa Grandemange threw 16.61m (54-6) in the weight to finish fourth. Walker also threw 14.15m (46-5¼) in the weight.

It was a short and quick prelude to the upcoming season as the team will be off for more than a month before it returns to action at home January 11-12 for the Potts Indoor Invitational.

Congrats to Dani Jones on being nominated for the Bowerman!

Direct link - https://cubuffs.com/news/2019/1/7/t...he-preseason-watch-list-for-the-bowerman.aspx

"
NEW ORLEANS — University of Colorado senior Dani Jones has been selected to the Preseason Watch List for The Bowerman, collegiate track & field's highest honor, which is presented by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Jones has seen a great deal of success on the track throughout her career. She was the 2017 NCAA indoor 3,000-meter run champion and was a member of the CU school record-setting distance medley relay team that won the NCAA title at the same meet. A two-time outdoor All-American in the 1,500, she also owns freshman school records in the 800 (2:05.27) and 1,500 (4:13.44).

During the 2018 summer, she raced in the high performance section of the 1,500 at the Prefontaine Classic and finished first with a then-personal best of 4:07.33. At the 2018 USATF Championships, she brought home a fifth-place finish in the 1,500 with a time of 4:09.16.

The initial watch list consists of 10 women and will be updated throughout the indoor and outdoor track & field seasons.

....

*It is important to note that performances achieved in cross country, or any other sport other than indoor and outdoor track & field, should not be considered for the honor.

Also, as indicated in the tweet but not discussed in the article, one of two chances to see the indoor track and field team in Boulder this season (on the 11th and 12th) at the Potts Indoor Invitational. (Assume more on the Invitational upcoming.)

Aztec you are the undisputed best at keeping the rest of the sporting activity at CU on our radar. We have many excellent contributors to football (including you), Goose and a few others hoop it for us, but you carry the big load on the rest. Thanks!

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program concluded the 2019 Potts Invitational with three wins on the women's side Saturday afternoon in Boulder, led by six in the finals of the women's hurdles.

The women's hurdle finals was the largest points scoring event for the Buffaloes with six individuals scoring in finals, led by Eriana Henderson's 8.59. Valerie Welch placed second at 8.68, barely beating teammate Dani Johnson by two-thousandths of a second. Freshman Kylie Davis broke the 9-second barrier at 8.91 seconds for fourth, while Drianna Mustin finished sixth at 9.20 and Kylee Harr ran 9.34 for seventh.

Johnson continued to excel after posting 8.53 in the hurdle prelims. In her third race of the day in the women's 200 Johnson ran 25.05 to take the victory. Harr joined her with an eighth-place finish at 26.21.

The final victory came in the women's mile where Mackenzie Caldwell came back from behind to take the race in the final lap at 4:56.40. Lindsey Koch and Baylee Jones were fourth and fifth in the race at 5:09.75 and 5:09.97, respectfully.
...

Despite not picking up a win the men had numerous strong performances, led by Duane McClurkin Jr. who finished second in the 200 at 21.43 seconds and led the men's 4x400 to a second-place finish at 3:16.46.
...

Numerous meet records fell in the second day of competition in the third installment of the meet. The most impressive performance came from nation-leading Marybeth Sant from CSU in the 60-meter dash. Despite not having a prelim, Sant ran 7.18 seconds to break the meet record and the facility record by nearly two-tenths of a second. Other records fell in the men's 200, men's 3,000, men's 4x400, women's 400 and women's shot put.

Most of Colorado will not compete next weekend except for a few individuals that will head to New Mexico to compete in the MLK Invitational.

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program boasts both the men and women's teams in the top-25 of the United State Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association rankings, the association announced Tuesday afternoon.

The men have the top spot between the two CU teams, ranked 18th in the nation after opening 15th in the preseason poll. The men's scoring index come from two individuals, Joe Klecker and John Dressel. Nearly half of the points the Buffs are ranked for come from Klecker being ranked third in the USTFCCCA poll for his 4:01.72 mile he ran last season at the Colorado Invitational.

On the other side of the polls, the women are ranked 23rd after beginning the preseason ranked 24th. The women's squad have two individuals gaining points for their current season marks, Maja Wichhart-Donzo and Michaela Wenning in the women's pentathlon. Wichhart-Donzo is ranked 22nd, while Wenning is 29th by USTFCCCA standards. Nearly two-thirds of Colorado's ranking points come from Dani Jones being ranked first in the USTFCCCA in the mile from her previous best of 4:36.05 that she ran at the Colorado Invitational.

The women boast eight individuals contributing to their ranking, including Sage Hurta, Elissa Mann, Tabor Scholl, Makena Morley and Kaitlyn Benner. They have at least two individuals in every distance event from the 800 to the 5,000, including three in the 3,000 in Jones, Morley and Benner.

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program left the Air Force Academy Friday evening with three names on top of qualifying marks and finals in the 2019 Air Force Invitational.

Valerie Welch was the lone victor in finals during the first day of competition, picking up a win in the women's long jump. The hurdler stole the show with a new personal best of 5.85 meters (19-2.5) to win the competition. She was nearly 10 centimeters ahead of second place's Amiya Anoma of Wichita State.

Welch accomplished the victory after running the fourth-best time in qualifying in the women's hurdles with a time of 8.74. Her teammate Dani Johnson was the fastest in qualifying with a race of 8.52, while Eriana Henderson had the second-fastest mark at 8.65. Kylie Davis rounded out the women's hurdle with the eighth-best time at 9.00.

Henderson also joined Welch in the women's long jump, jumping 5.53m (18-1.75) for fourth place.

The final top mark of the day came in the men's 60-meter dash when Duane McClurkin Jr. ran 6.86. The mark is six-hundredths of a second faster than his previous personal best. McClurkin Jr. will have another round of prelims and finals to continue to push his best time.

Last indoor track and field home meet of the season starts tomorrow.

Perform well Buffs! Get some big qualifying marks/ times!
(If I remember correctly, some of the NCAA Championship - level distance runners have earned their 1st NCAA Championship qualifying marks at this meet (after NCAA altitude conversion is made) in recent seasons, often the 1st official races for them after cross country.)

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program will host one of the largest home meets of the season in the CU Invitational with more than 25 teams in attendance, starting tomorrow and finishing Saturday in the Indoor Practice Facility.

The action begins tomorrow at 2 p.m. with the first day of the men's heptathlon and the women's pentathlon. Thursday will only play host to the multis and is free to attend. Friday's events begin at 9 a.m. and will host the conclusion of the heptathlon and all of the field events for the meet except the shot put. The highlighted seeded miles will begin with the men's race at 7:30 p.m., followed by the women's event at 7:40 p.m. The shot put and the rest of the running events begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

This meet will be the first seen action in the track season for the Colorado distance squad. The women are coming off their national championship finish in cross country, while the men are fourth. This will be the first meet that will include CU student-athletes in all track and field disciplines.

Over the past two years this meet has rewritten the IPF records more than 35 times. Last year alone 17 facility records were written, including Dani Jones taking back the Colorado soil mile record with a mark of 4:36.05. The men's mile event will include 15 of the fastest milers from across the region, something that was very apparent last year with a dozen individuals under 4:11. Two years ago Ben Saarel ran 4:01.49 at this meet, the second-fastest mile ever ran in the state of Colorado.

Thursday's events are free to the public, while Friday's admission is $5 and Saturday's events will be $8 admission, and anyone with a BuffOne card will receive free admission. CU's clear bag policy will be in affect and the IPF is a water-only facility. Fans can also follow results live at cubuffs.com/tracklive.

BOULDER – Junior Tabor Scholl took command in the women's elite mile race Friday evening for the University of Colorado, winning the first running event at the CU Invitational in a time of 4:41.85.

The elite mile races occurred Friday evening in a packed Indoor Practice Facility and displayed 15 of the best athletes entered in both genders. Scholl was paced strongly until 450 meters were remaining when she began to push ahead of the small lead pack and to the victory. The junior won the race by nearly five seconds, outpacing Sarah Feeny of Utah and Roisin Flanagan of Adams State who finished just under 4:47. The rest of the race came across nearly 10 seconds after the first three with Colorado runners Taylor Tuttle (4:59.36) and Holly Bent(5:00.70) finishing in 10th and 11th, respectfully.

"Tabor's mark 4:41.85 will probably convert to 4:35 or a smidgen under which will put her sixth or seventh in the country and has always advanced to the NCAA," said head coach Mark Wetmore on the women's mile. "That was the aspiration, to get her a qualifying mark. Behind her, well there were some rusty women behind her that looked rusty. They have some work still to do. Some are young, some are not great up here at this elevation so we will see over the next couple of weeks how they do."

Scholl wasn't the only victor for the Buffaloes, as freshman Jeremy Cody took the high jump title with a clearance of 2.06m (6-9). The freshman has taken both home victories in the high jump this season.
...

"Well lots of events tomorrow, looking forward to everyone we have going," said Wetmore on tomorrow's events. "I think Duane McClurkin Jr.is in the best shape of his life, he is going to do some good things. The 3ks should be pretty good, the women's 800 is very loaded. Elissa Mann is going to have her hands full there is a sub-2 minute professional runner in there. A lot of good things, a whole day of exciting events tomorrow."

Nearly all of the field events concluded today with the exception of the shot put, as CU returns to action tomorrow on the track with the first start at 11 a.m.

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program broke a pair of school records and numerous facility records in the final day of the 2019 CU Invitational.

"This is a three day meet, so much happens in those three days it's hard to remember everything, particularly this last day which is chaos from 11 to 6," said head coach Mark Wetmore about his team's performance this weekend. "My overall sense is we had the best meet here ever for us. School records, national qualifying mark, lots of personal bests. I have to say when it all settles down it was a really good day."

Senior Gabby Scott was the main factor in the records being rewritten after she broke a 22-year old school record in the women's 400-meter dash. In her first race of the season, Scott ran 53.56 to destroy Leona Russell's previous mark of 54.00 in 1996. Scott also joined forces with Valerie Welch, Dani Johnson and Eriana Henderson as the group broke the 4x400-meter relay record by four seconds. The quartet ran 3:38.24, a top-25 time in the nation this season.

"Gabby looks great, she is in the best shape of her life," said Wetmore. "I know she has worked real hard. (Coach) Burke Bockman has asked that of her and she has responded. One has to imagine at sea-level running against good women and maybe a banked track … she's not done."

Arguably the most impressive performance came in the men's 3,000 when Joe Klecker ran 8:01.68 to drop the facility record by 10 seconds and take over the national-lead with the altitude conversion. His converted mark drops to 7:48.16, which puts him second on the school's all-time bests list behind Adam Goucher.

The women's hurdles was another key race with Dani Johnson and Eriana Henderson finishing first and second with times of 8.39 and 8.40 seconds. The duo both moved into the top-four in school history with the marks, with Johnson in third and Henderson in fourth. They were joined by Valerie Welch who finished third at 8.53 seconds.

"Well there is an event in track and field called the shuttle hurdle relay where four runners run back-and-forth and they have it at the bigger meets like Penn Relays, Drake and maybe Texas which we are scheduled to go to," said Wetmore when asked about the women's hurdlers. "If we can fit it into a busy schedule maybe we can give it a try."

Two other facility records dropped today, the men's 400 and the women's 3,000. Makenna Morley ran virtually unopposed in the 3,000 and dropped her own record by a tenth of a second to 9:20.43. Duane McClurkin Jr. had an exciting 400-meter finish where he was nearly shouldered off the track with 150 meters to go as he fought for inside position into the final turn. The senior recovered and burned the final corner to cross in 47.10, dropping his personal best time by half a second and taking over the facility record. McClurkin Jr. also had a strong comeback anchoring the men's 4x400 relay to a victory with a time of 3:13.71.
...

"Some of the distance runners had very good days last night and tonight," said Wetmore. "Tabor, Joe and Makenna all were trying to get NCAA qualifying marks. Tabor certainly has. Joe certainly has and Makenna's mark has always made it but the women's distance races keep getting better every year so we have to keep our fingers crossed. She ran faster this year than she did last year and she qualified last year. Joe's mark is a very big mark, we've known he is very fit and a psycho-trainer and has done impeccable things this year. This sets him up nice for the things that are coming, he will go to Washington next week and run a 5k. Makenna's mark is great, out running hard all alone against the clock trying to hit the splits. It is a tiny bit faster than she did a year ago and she got in last year. Some good individuals marks for some distance runners, but as one of the distance coaches I'd have to say some other people looked flat and three or five good marks is nice but we had some people that were a little disappointing."
...

Colorado will split next weekend with trips to Arkansas and Seattle to compete in the Tyson Invitational and Husky Classic. The hurdlers and sprinters will head east to Arkansas, while the distance squad and some throwers will head to the Pacific Northwest.

A couple notes from me-
  • Next weekend are the 1st meets of the year where the team is going outside the region to face top national competition.
  • Probably the current Buff track "star", Dani Jones, who would be one of the major favorites at the NCAA Indoor Championship whether she ran the mile or 3000M. raced unattached in both the mile (Friday) and 3000M (today), but finished neither. Hopefully all is well health-wise with her. (I saw a picture from yesterday's mile that looks to me like she may (???) have just been helping pace a teammate; if so, that hopefully was also the case in today's 3000M.)
Assuming she is healthy, wonder if the plan might currently be to redshirt her this indoor season?
(These redshirting plans often seem very fluid in track and cross country. However, she already redshirted outdoors last season, so she would be a senior in both track seasons next season if she redshirts indoors this season. (This is all of course assuming she doesn't decide to go pro after this outdoor season.))
