yeps. we are not paper thin, but are starting to develop a bit of cushion. with time, this will turn into depth.
we are quicker.
we have won more games already than the entire season of hawk's first year.
the colorado community, campus, and faculty is starting to rally together.
what is not to like? there is no magic wand, and it will not happen overnight.
Just very young.
no hoodies stolen.
yes. no question about it. he is still in a rebuilding mode and likely may be until the '10 season. although, the '09 schedule is very favorable for a 10+ win season.
I will say, the thing that f-ed us ove was actually winning the first 3. In a way it made us as fans believe we had come a lot further along than we actually have. Those first 3 games we saw a very solid offense and defense agains CSU and very simple playcalling. EW brought us a great come from behind win and great defensive play in the 2nd half. WV gave us a solid win over a solid, ranked team. I think we were a little bit to optimisitic yesterday. At the begining of the season if someone would have said we would be 3-1 heading into Texas, I would have been very reluctant to believe that. We ARE heading the right way! It will just take time, and the first 3 games made some people think this was the season that we were going to go from night and day. This is still going to be a winning season, and hopefully a bowl win.
I think we are headed in the right direction, for now. However, and I know this could bold and nearsighted to say, but Cody could be the undoing of his father. He is a decent QB, but he is not good and definitely not great. His father won't bench him and we are stuck with him for the next two and a half seasons. By the time he leaves, his Dad might not have the momentum he needs to continue to build the program.
How can you say no? Hawk improved to a bowl after 2-10, he is off to a 3-1 start this year and he is competitive against almost anyone.
You bet we are headed in the right direction and anybody who can't recognize it truly does not know anything about footballk, recruting and the facts.
Very cool avatar.
I do see your point. But don't you think its a little too early to say if Cody isn't any good. I mean, he's only a sophmore. True he doesn't have a cannon on his shoulder, and he's short. I'm just not ready to stick a fork in him just yet. jmho here.
I'm not trying to out people here. I just turned off the option to view how people voted.
we've still got gaps, but they've put more athletes on the field than we've seen since probably 2002.
so, yeah, things are looking up.
even so, we need a good year this year so that we can have another good recruiting class.
everyone is pointing to next year, but i am not so sure. basically, what i think we need is a nice year this season-- like at least 7 wins and a bowl victory. this puts us pre-season top 25 i suspect in 09. and we need another top 20 class this year.
i want a 9 or 10+ win season next year and hopefully a top 15 class... then, assuming no more run of bad luck injuries, i think the table will be set for a nice long run of being dangerous.
we could still get hot and win 10 this year. texas is great, but they are beatable at folsom. the only game i look at and go "damn" is mizzery.
we ain't dead yet!
I think the program is headed in a "better" direction.
Whether it is the "right" direction remains to be seen.
I'm not saying no...seriously...I do believe we are headed in the right direction, but ultimately where we want to be is on top. We want to win games against the Florida State's and Miami's of the world (especially in a down year) but we don't have the QB play to carry us. We might not have the QB play in the next two and a half years. Granted, our issues might not be all contributed to Cody, but it is the most inconsistent position we have, and has been for three years. And when all is said and done, it might be too late for some Hawk love. I hope I'm proven completely and utterly wrong.
I agree, I hope I'm being a serious skeptic. I really want to see Cody succeed. And yes, he is young. I guess a lot of what I'm thinking has a lot to do with the other QBs in our league. They are young as well (some in terms of playing time, not year in school like Ganz) and they are light-years ahead of him in terms of consistency and tools.
i think the reason hawk has not replaced cody is because we do not have a better option at this point.
i fail to see how that will really undo either of them.
Certainly Hawkins has the program going in the right direction. He is clearly the man for the job and has brought in two very good recruiting classes (He is also good at finding hidden gems like Rodney Stewart)
If Ballenger was making noise in practice i'm sure we'd hear about it.
All I know is that we scare the crap out of every fan of every team that has to play us. Or if we don't, they will learn the hard way!
Headed in the right direction? Depends on where the start point is based.
Compared to the past 6 seasons? Yep. The direction is correct.
It'd be nice if the speed in which Colorado gets to the top of the B12 might be a little faster.
The Big 12 has gotten really good really fast.
This is due more to a couple down programs (Mizzou, KU esp) finding hidden gems in recruiting at the QB position at the same time as fielding some decent defensive talent. Mizzou (after this year) and KU (perhaps this year, but definitely after Reesing leaves) will BOTH be back down in mediocrity soon. Pinkel was a .500 coach before finding a certain short QB/heisman candidate/robot superstar, and he will be again.
Honestly not sure.
Not sure at this point. Problem is,with so many i njuries and especially the OL,I think that will cost cu big time this season.
Miller and tuioti out is brutal.
I was hoping for 7 wins, I doubt it but we'll see, that's why you play the games.
If they are not going to use darrell scott, they should have redshirted him.5 carries isn't going to cut it. I mean is that how they are going to use him the next 8 games,5 carries? If so, don't be suprised if he.....
I'm not talking about just this season. I'm talking more about overall.
...and you're correct about DScott. I wish Hawkins would address this soon.
An outsiders point of view.
Hawkins has you improved from where Barnett and Slick Rick were. I think you all will have a good season.
The one thing I do see is Cody being a weakness at QB. Gonna be real interesting to see how that pans out with him being the coaches kid. Could be a sticky situation with big time implications. But yeah, I think Coach Hawkins is/has done a good job for you guys.
this is exactly correct and fairly obvious, i think. the best guy will play. if any of the underlings were pushing cody, then someone might have a beef, but they aren't at this point. nelson is clearly not the answer this year. ballenger and hansen didn't take the job from cody. so, cody is the guy.
the only criticism along these lines that makes any tiny bit of sense is that it *may* be impacting the recruitment of a bluechip qb. but, that is speculative. getting bluechip qbs ain't exactly easy in any circumstance.
The really sad thing is we all desperately want Cody to succeed. I honestly think that he is going to be the qb that we need, but I can understand some of the frustrations. Time will tell...
Is the program headed in the right direction? yes. No question. Colorado is being talked about, we are competing for the kids with USC, UT, OU, ND, etc, not New Mexico State and Idaho. We are faster than we have been in a long time, and will continue to get that way in the future.
Now we did start to think we were further ahead than we were-- think about how CU's win/loss total would be if we had 18 kids suspended for the first 3 games. FSU was better with so many starters back. So we didn't beat them on the road. I can't imagine we will see a better and faster defense than we did last week for the rest of the year.
I also think that Cody will NOT be the starter his senior year, and will be at worse, sharing time next year with Hansen. Hansen just could not come in and know the offense as well as Cody when he was a true frshman, but from all I have heard, is making great strides this year. I also take into account that the backup QB's are the favortie people on the team, so we will see. I do not think that hawk makes the Helfrich play Cody if Hansen is a better player.
Let's not overlook Ballenger here. He's got plenty of talent. Who was talking about him last year? Wasn't it a ex NFL QB? He was saying Ballenger was going to be a star.
